Season 42 - 1955GP – Round 6 – Zolder

The sixth race in the 1955 Grand Prix series takes us to Zolder in the Belgium. Built in 1963, Zolder hosted the Formula One Belgian Grand Prix on 10 separate occasions in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as the 1980 Belgian motorcycle Grand Prix. F1 moved to Zolder in 1973 and with the exception of a race at Nivelles-Baulers in 1974, Zolder was the location of the Belgian Grand Prix until 1982. That year, Canadian driver Gilles Villeneuve was killed during qualifying at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix. Villeneuve's Ferrari 126C2 collided at speed with the March of Jochen Mass. The Ferrari was torn up in the accident and when rolling, Villeneuve was thrown from the car.

After Villeneuve's death, the Belgian Grand Prix was held at Spa-Francorchamps in 1983, before returning to Zolder one final time in 1984. Fittingly, Ferrari driver Michele Alboreto won the race carrying Villeneuve's #27 on his car. Since 1985, the Belgian Grand Prix has permanently moved to Spa.

I've applied for a rearward grid spot, if a spot can be found.

I've had to make you a reserve Martin because we already have 19 drivers registered. However, we have had some spare grid slots at every race this season so you should get a drive. Good luck in the race.

When Leo smashed the pole time out of the park, I knew P2 was my only realistic target. I got a good start but so did everyone around me and going into T1 I was sure Bob was on my inside (I could hear his engine and Pribluda was showing 1 yard) so I stayed wide. That gave me the inside line for T2 and I stayed ahead, just! I watched Leo drive serenely away and I kept a close eye on my mirrors. Bob and Evil were very close but Evil disappeared (at T1 on Lap 2?) so I only had Bob hounding me for the rest of the race. I tried to make sure I didn't make any mistakes, it is very easy to clip a kerb and spin these cars or run out of brakes and tarmac. Fortunately I kept it together to secure a rather distant second place. Brilliant driving from Leo and great racing with Bob.

A hard won grid spot, suggested my race would be rearward.  And so it was.

When Francesco battled past, I battled back and had almost re-passed, when someone threw a tree at me! Shocked  It was on the long back straight, and the resultant impact and spin, cost me 5 seconds, but I can see nothing in the rulebook about such behaviour.

Eventually cooked the brakes, while trying to reclose the gap.  None-the-less, it was good to be back in a '55. Wink

3 laps to go and I binned it . This place was more like a skating rink than a race track , cooked the brakes most laps and had to coast till the green showed again but then trying too hard to make up lost ground went into spin and bin mode .

Hope to get the hang of these cars before christmas .

I just like the flow of Zolder corners, how you have to settle the car in one corner thinking about the next. You don't need to push or brake hard, just drift in and out.

yep!, quite right Phil T1 lap 2 and got myself caught in the catch fencing. Tried forward and reverse to extricate myself and succeeded only in blowing the engine  Undecided.

I would like to blame Arnold or Mabel for the error, but I am finding it difficult to actually pin the blame on them.  I cannot explain why I did not have a copy of Zolder in my system??? TBH I rocked up to the server at 8:45 and expected to jump straight in a sort a setup. But of course without a Zolder track folder I was refused entry......SRMZ was down and so is the Track Database.....Huh
I posted a "help" message on the forum and my good buddy Doni provided a link. That was all good except that I then had to Sign Up for that resource, and await a confirmation email, before I could get a download. Then install and reboot GEM, transfer the track into the 55 Season, then fire up IGOR and try again. Just to further screw things I joined in what I thought was the Connaught ( I wanted the Vanwall ), quit and reloaded only to discover that I had had the Vanwall and now had the Connaught  Huh.
Anyhoo, finally I was in the pits with a Vanwall.......but no setup and only 14 mins of quali left  Undecided

Cobbled together a setup that generated 4th/5th on grid, but it was far from ideal for me. Not enough time/laps to get the gears into the right ratios or to nail the optimum braking points. The lack of practice laps bit me hard on Lap 2 when I was 5mtrs too late at T1 and gently ran off into the fencing  censored
Grats  to Leo on a commanding performance and to Phil and Bob. It might have been a bit more interesting if I could have held things together.

Murphy's Law, Clive.

And some would say that he was an optimist.  Smiley
