Season 42 – F1 67 WORKS – Round 7 –BOREHAM AIRFIELD

The 7th race in the 1967 Grand Prix series finds us at Boreham Airfield in the UK. RAF Boreham closed in 1946 and subsequently the West Essex Car Club developed the 2.95 mile perimeter track into a motor racing circuit. Although not on the official Grand Prix calendar, Boreham Circuit hosted competitive races between 1949 and 1952. Among the teams that raced at Boreham were BRM, Connaught, Frazer Nash, and Talbot-Lago. Among the drivers who raced there were Mike Hawthorn, Stirling Moss, and Ken Wharton. In 1955 the Ford Motor Company bought the airfield to use as a test facility for trucks, as well as the base for their Competitions Department where they prepared their cars.

Sorry. It was my fault for putting the bale there.

As for me? Clutch failure on the front straight. I've never had that before as a retirement issue in GPL. Hey ho!

I don't understand what happened:
15 laps from the finish, I found myself last, 1 lap behind everyone else.
normally, I should have finished 6th

Don't worry, I'll sort it. I've checked the replay, your connection dropped out at the end of lap 17, thankfully not enough for a full disco but enough for your 17th lap not to register with the server. I'll amend the results on import.

I'd saved some tokens so I could afford a Lotus today. I need a car advantage to get anywhere near the podium in the Works, so I was deflated when I saw both Tris and Leo roll up in Colin Chapman's creation. But with only 3 Lotuses in the field I still had a chance of a podium. Qually went well with Tris and Leo way ahead as expected and me in P3. Pete got within 3 hundredths of my time in his Eagle so I was expecting a massive battle. I got a good start and settled in behind Leo. I managed to keep Pete behind into the first corner and from there on I just tried to drive within myself. I managed to stay focussed until the penultimate lap when I clipped the grass and spun out at Railway Corner. Thankfully no damage was done and I recovered to keep my podium place, luckily JonnyO was just far enough behind so he couldn't take advantage of my mistake  oops.

Grats to Tris and Leo. They were very fast. It looks like Leo has a good lead in the championship but only 8/10 rounds count so he has some points to drop compared with some of the other drivers. So his lead is bound to slim down, you can't take your foot off the gas yet Leo  Grin

I'm really sorry for Doni, it's painful to pull out of the race so soon.
Finishing in 4th was the best I could have wanted, after all the lotus were irresistible!!! But the race was very exciting for me, at the beginning we were there chasing Bennett's Eagle, but he made a mistake in the double corner and it was left to me and Greg, we ran together for many laps, we were equal and I had the advantage that the Ferrari was faster in straight and I opened it little by little, but with Greg behind you, you can not never go wrong. And I managed to follow the race without making any mistakes.
Congratulations to the podium, Tristan was dominant and Leo, I think, was thinking about the points.
Phill's podium stands out, as he maintained a constant pace on a track that you walk on a razor's edge.

You are right Jonny. After seeing the car allocation I just thought about the points. Nothing different at the start and I managed the difference to Phil in a bureaucratic race to the end.

But I see this result as a victory as we are now in a very strong position regarding tokens. I see you now bringing only the Lotus for the next events and I won't be so bad either. Hope we can have some fine racing up front.

But nothing finished yet as Phil pointed out

Congratulations Tristan, Leo, and Phil!

That was a good race. I enjoyed it. It would be very difficult for me to drive any better than I did. I hoped to stay close enough to Pete, Jonny, and Phil that they couldn´t afford a spin or any time off the track. I thought Pete would do better since he made the track. If he caught me, I probably wouldn´t have contested the position much. It was good to see Jonny run a good, consistent race.

Thanks for the fun guys. I appreciate it.

Congrats to the pods - a great drive in the Lotuses (or should that be Lotii?). Well done for keeping them in one piece until the end on such a high revving track. Well done Phil on P3.

I made one mistake which put me on the grass and then found that it's almost impossible to recover at this track. As Jonny said, you drive on a razor's edge here. Then I was hit by the GPL random attack of a clutch failure. I've never seen that in GPL before, only suspension or engine problems.

Well done once again. See you at the next round where I'll brave taking the fragile Lotus.

Pete
