Season 42 - 1965    Round 67    Boreham

The 7th race in the 1965 Grand Prix series finds us at Boreham Airfield in the UK. RAF Boreham closed in 1946 and subsequently the West Essex Car Club developed the 2.95 mile perimeter track into a motor racing circuit. Although not on the official Grand Prix calendar, Boreham Circuit hosted competitive races between 1949 and 1952. Among the teams that raced at Boreham were BRM, Connaught, Frazer Nash, and Talbot-Lago. Among the drivers who raced there were Mike Hawthorn, Stirling Moss, and Ken Wharton. In 1955 the Ford Motor Company bought the airfield to use as a test facility for trucks, as well as the base for their Competitions Department where they prepared their cars.

Rubbish race for me, felt really slow in the cooper compared to the rest of the cars.

Clive, so sorry for taking you out in the last bend, you were quicker than me and I should have let you have that one.

See you all at the next one Smiley

An exciting race until I put half a wheel on the grass and spun. Luckily I could continue but the gap to the leaders was too big. The Lotus was better in the twisty bits but the BRM had the legs on the straights and I had no defence on the run down to Railway Corner.  I had to compromise my lines when trying to stay with the BRMs. I would close up in the corners but if I braked hard I'd loose too much momentum, so my lines were a bit creative. Great driving from Tris, Cookie, Tom and Pete. We were very close and swapping places for many laps without touching. Just how it should be  thumbup1 thumbup1 thumbup2 thumbup2

Yep, that was a lot of fun. I made a good start from P3 and I could see mayhem in my mirrors. Will was in my ears over Discord shouting "Dad, there are cars flying in the air". I need to look at the replay to see who was involved but it looked scary.

For the first third of the race 100 yards separated the first 5 cars - brilliant nose to tail stuff. Just what GPL in the 65s should be about. Great driving guys. As ever, Tris had the edge on all of us and the best we could hope for was for him to slip up. Still, that didn't happen but we had some great slip-stream moments and then Phil and I made a couple of mistakes which left Axel and Tom to fight it out. As I said in my post-race post, my previously indestructible BRM engine let go which left me no option other than to shift-r. Andreas picked me up quickly with his warm tyres and light fuel load and all I struggled to keep with him for the remainder of the laps but again, super close racing.

Who cares about the result when the racing is this good? Not me.  Grin

Yeah, great fun close racing with guys on level, not risking too much and allways leaving room, but giving all possible pressure Grin
