Season 42 – F1 67 WORKS – Round 10 – WIESBADEN

The 10th and final round of the Season 42 takes us to Wiesbaden in Germany.
The Wiesbadener Automobiel-Turnier was an event first organised in the early 1920s. Apart from the Hohe Wurzel hillclimb and a gymkhana, it also included races for sports- and racing cars titled Rund um den Neroberg from 1924-1929 and in 1931. Motorcycles were also catered for at least once, in 1927. The races were originally held on an eight-shaped 12.5 km circuit north of the city, which comprised 86 curves through undulating terrain. Large parts of this course seem to have vanished since. The sole documented fastest lap is Hans Stuck's 9.22,0 = 80.1 km/h (1928). In 1931, the race took place once more, now on a shortened, or possibly completely new, 4.6 km circuit. Bugatti-driver Heinrich Joachim von Morgen clocked the fastest lap in 2.41,4 = 102.6 km/h. The new course was used just once, because after 1931 the Neroberg races were dropped in favour of grass track races at the airfield of Erbenheim, just south-east of Wiesbaden. That same airfield was later paved and hosted a one-off auto race in 1958. The next races in Wiesbaden took place in May 1935 and 1936 as part of the Wiesbadener Motorsportkämpfe, which was more or less the successor of the Automobiel-Turnier mentioned above. The event included a long-distance regularity run, but also a speed event (Hochleistungsprüfung) on a 7.48 km street circuit in Wiesbaden, for touring cars, sports cars and motorcycles, although it should be noted there is a possibility these actually used some sort of time trial-like format.

Unfortunately I will miss this last race of the championship. Last minute commitments in real life (it exists out there), will occupy me. I don't know if I will be able to keep the position I have in the championship, my goal was to be in the top ten. It will be next season, I hope. Thank you very much for organizing all this and thanks for the camaraderie and fair play.

First, I must explain why I started from the last position: In qualy I had the 2nd time......but the curiosity to get to know the city of Wiesbaden better, made me walk around the city in the inner part and go between the buildings in search of a cafe, I found the coffee, but the judge of the race considered that I was walking in the opposite direction and gave a beautiful DQ in the qualy ..... therefore the last one on the grid.

In the qualy I did 5 laps with full tank and I wanted to see my pace for the race, Leo's time was difficult for me, and I decided not to lose energy for the race. This track you need precision, attacking the entry of the corner can mean staying stuck on a fence or break on the wall.

But after the first lap, when a lot of decisive things happened, first I survived the mess of the multiple accident, and second and perhaps the most decisive, is to see Leo retiring with car problems. With that, I had a lot of advantage for the pilots who didn't have a Lotus, on this track the difference between the Lotus and the other cars is almost 2s on average, that's a lot.

Then it was about having patience and catching up with any car, staying sideways at the beginning of the long straight and passing easily with the power of the cosworth, this was repeated lap by lap. When I got to Greg, I took advantage of a small gap and passed and when I noticed Tristan was out of the running. I don't know if I could catch Tristan until the end of the race, but winning again this season made me forget about Rio Quarto......heheheh

Well, we reached the end of this season in mod67, we have Leo as champion and dominator of this series. And here in Wiesbaden I'm happy to share the podium with my friends Greg and Doni !!!!

The last thing in the world I would have expected from this event was walking out of the park with a podium placing.  And that especially after the first lap dramas where I was bounced around like a pin ball!  LOL!

Great job by Jonny to score the win.  He'll have to come back in here and explain why he qualified in P2 yet started at the back of the pack.  A self-imposed handicap?  Greg scores a worthy P2 after a solid drive.  And me, a lucky P3.

I was asleep enjoying an afternoon nap to about 16:00 hours when I suddenly awoke realizing that the race start was barely half an hour away.  ACTION STATIONS!  Scrambled to get myself awake with a hot cup of tea and signed in.  Did not have the best qualifying effort to start P8.  Immediately lost a place to Fulvio when Bobbie B starting just ahead of me was slow to launch.  Got that place back down in Bahnhof when Roberto backed out way early.  Comes the difficult section of Coulinstraffe and what do I find?  The track is blocked with cars scattered all over the place.  Leo had cuffed the barrier on the left and was stuck.  Most everyone following was tied up in some fashion with some being lucky and some cursed and Jonny was one of those finishing Lap01 in P8.  I guess that I was one of the lucky ones as despite being knocked about, I emerged from this mess in P5 chasing Fulvio.  Over the next laps, I settled in to give chase closing in very slightly until Lap13 when I saw a flash of fire and then smoke from Fulvio's engine bay.  Groan...  What a cruel fate.  Bad luck there, Fulvio.  In the laps prior, Jonny had come roaring back to pass and was now on a mission to charge to the front.  Lap13 was also grisly for two other runners.  Bot and Clive fell victim to hard wall here each losing wheels.  I was impressed to see that not even having reached half distance, Clive set the 5th fastest lap of the meet in the less than competitive Honda.  Doing the Blue Moose proud there, Clive.  Smiley

After Fulvio's engine failed, I just put it on cruise control hardly believing my luck to be running P3.  Bobbie B was quite some distance behind but was gradually reducing the gap as I ran with plenty in hand.  He had a late-race drama to fall back and had to settle for P4.  A good job nonetheless.

Leo emerges as our S42 GP67 Champion despite his nil result here at Weisbaden.  Well done, Leo!

Greg takes the silver medal after good season.

Jonny takes the bronze edging me out by a single point.  Hmmm...  I'll get you for that, JJ.  Wink

My thanks to the club for organizing and to Dave Rainier for keeping it all straight.

Note: I see that Jonny has explained his grid placing.  Bloody tourists!  Cheesy

Doni I was expecting another good duel while you were closing the gap on me cause your initial misfortune that i had avoided for a hair, but nonetheless I was lifting on the bump on the straight and I had set a long 5th gear the engine blew. Too bad, till there I had avoided any collision with barriers. A note: when I joined the server I found that the track was completely different from that I had thought, no time to practice during the week...

Congrats to Leo and Jonny in the standings!

Leo did very good through most of the season. If I wanted to be champion, I needed to be almost perfect. I couldn´t afford the slightest mistake if I wanted to beat Leo. I also got lucky that Tristan had a poor season.

I apologize for hitting you Leo. I didn´t see you until it was too late. I thought you were stuck in the wall and I was glad it appeared I got you out of the wall. I had no idea your steering wheel had failed. I hope you get it working well again.

That was an excellent race for Jonny! Going from last to first is great. I didn´t have the skill or speed to deserve any better than P4.

This is the first year I´ve driven the Brabham much. I struggle a little with it. I don´t think I drive it as well as I can the Ferrari, Cooper, Eagle, or Lotus.

Thanks for the fun gentlemen and thanks for letting me race with you.
