Season 42 - 1955GP – Round 10 – Assen

The tenth and final race in the 1955 Grand Prix series finds us at Assen in the Netherlands. Assen has a long history of motor racing. The first event, a motorcycle race, was held in 1925 on country roads through the villages of Rolde, Borger, Schoonloo and Grolloo.  Between 1926 and 1954, the Dutch TT (Tourist Trophy) motorcycle race, was held on the Van Drenthe circuit. This was a 10.27 miles street circuit through De Haar, Barteldsbocht, Oude Tol, Hooghalen, Laaghalen and Laaghalerveen. In 1955 a new purpose built track was inaugurated which was shorter than the original but at 6.049 miles it was still a long track by modern standards. Over the years the track has been through numerous modifications which have changed its length each time. The 1967 version we are using tonight is 4.8 miles long.  Although more famous for motorcycle racing, the track has been used for car racing (BOSS GP, Champ Car, DTM and several junior classes) but never for Formula 1.

Baking hot in this loft space , gotta be upwards of 35C .

Doubt I'm going to last 14 laps will have to cruise around at the back and count the number of times I get lapped or collapse from heat stroke  Roll Eyes

Unlucky there Evil.

Miserable of you to pinch pole from me so serves you right.

Grats on the win Clive, you just had a bit too much pace for me tonight. I made a very small mistake but that was enough for me to loose the tow and after that I had no chance of keeping up. However, you towed me far enough ahead of Pete that I managed to hang on for P2. Grats on the podium Pete.

Unlucky Evil, camshafts don't break very often.

For some reason the server dropped one of Doni's and Bob's laps. I've checked the replay and corrected the results.

I lost it on Lap1 trying too hard too soon to keep up with Bob , unfortunately I collected Doni when spinning out of control across the track . ( Doni glad you were undamaged and could continue )

Just about sums up my season ,  Total Crap!   Roll Eyes

Hard luck Fran, I was surprised not to see you Huh?.

Evil nicked pole position from me in the last minutes of qualification when I was doing my race fuel practice.

He was off the line like a rocket too and I was just wondering how I was going to get past a sideways Maserati when he pulled over with smoke coming from his engine. That's motor racing.

But I still had Phil to contend with over the first half of the race. At times he was all over me in his Maserati and I was wondering if I needed to have my half bladder removed if that was the effect that it has.

It was a big relief when he dragged his wheels through the straw bales and allowed me to drive without one eye in the mirrors.

Once the gap opened up and the fuel load came down I felt more comfortable but maintained concentration by staying in fast race lap mode.  If I had backed off I am certain that I would have understeered off into the bales.

Thanks for the race, although it looks like that's it for this year.

Congratulations to Phil for second spot and well done to all finishers.

Grats Clive and podium guys.

It took me all 45 mins of qualifying to find the quick way around Assen. It was clearly not the car as it was like the curate's egg...good in parts. It was the way I was trying to drive it !!!

That final lap everything clicked and I hooked up the right braking points/lines/ apexes and gears....just to annoy Mr Loynes of course  Roll Eyes

I was actually looking forward to some close racing and some good fun, but the GPL gods are obviously being paid handsomely by the Loynes' foundation and they broke my camshaft. I was very chuffed with my start especially as I feared the power and speed of that Lancia on the long run down to T1, but it all went t*ts up a few seconds later. Undecided
I pulled straight off the track and I hope it did not impede anyone, except maybe Clive?  Evil

Sad I couldn't join you guys, my G27 still sidelined with a broken optical encoder, couldn't use my Merc I had reserved all season. Looks like it was fun up front.

Great job by Clive Loynes to romp home to a fine victory!  Well done.

Phil a roaring performance to score P2 after recent surgery.  Shades of Scott Stoddard.  Wink

Pete a fine drive to score a podium to finish out a fine year for him.  Good show.

I scored a rather lucky P4 having survived a major shunt with Bernie on Lap01.  Goodness me!  Bernie got by me off the grid and was looking solid til the tail of his Maser broke away in the twisties and I couldn't avoid.  Initially, I thought for sure that he was just going to glide by my nose moving from right to left and I'd miss him cleanly but no, his car suddenly slowed and WAMO!  Shaken...not stirred..., I pulled away from this to pursue Bob.  Sadly, Bernie was KO'd.  Managed to pick off Bob and soon after, Tom, both thanks to some minor gaffes to emerge P4 where I stayed for the duration.  Gotta say that was the most boring race.  Pete marching off to a healthy lead over me and I pulling distance on either Bob or Tom.  ZZZZZ...

Shocked and dismayed to see that Blue Moose mate, Evil Clive, had a glorious but short run in his Maser.  I caught sight of something out of the corner of my eye on Lap01 but wasn't sure if I was getting a proper read on that or no.  Later in scoping the replay cap, the truth became apparent.  Bugger!  Notwithstanding,  the Moose took the Teams title.  Smiley

Leo was a no-show thanks to hardware problems but still had enough points to emerge as our S42 GP55 champ.  Well done, Leo!

Phil takes the next slot in the title standing with a splendid season.  Great job, PT!

Tom finishes off a fine season with P3 in the championship.  Well done, TJ!

My thanks to the club for hosting and to Phil for organizing.  Two thumbs up!  Smiley

The reason Doni and Bob's last lap didn't count is due to the end of race timer. The set time for cars to finish can be adjusted if needed. This is not the only track with this issue. Just did make it between Doni and Bernie, but was still trying to adapt to the 55 after running a 65 race. I had no setup or practice for this race and it really showed. After Doni got past me I tried to just tag along but got to close entering a corner and had to bail off the track. Got going again after Bob made it by, and gave chase to him. He eventually had a braking issue going into a corner allowing me back by. Finally the last corner got me when I put a wheel off in the grass and shot across the track into the pits loosing a wheel. Pit crew must have already left for the day, as no one came to my aide.

Yes, Tom.  I was made aware later that you did the 'double'.  A GP65 race at Islington with GPLRacer immediately followed by our run at Assen.  Tough sledding.  Well done.

No way I would have attempted that.
