Well for a change I managed to keep out of trouble Roll Eyes. I knew I didn't have the pace to stay with Tris but I hoped to get close to Cookie with the benefit of a tow. I didn't have the speed to overtake Cookie but he was helping me pull a decent gap back to Evil. After 4 or 5 laps Cookie had a spin at turn 1 and gifted me second place. After that it was a matter of staying cool and monitoring the gap back to Evil. The gap came down steadily but I had enough to hang onto the end.

Great series Billy, I like these cars  thumbup2

This race went better for me than I had expected. Tris was in another class up ahead I think he must have been on soft slicks and the rest of us were on rain tyres!!

I arrived a little late on the server and discovered that ( for me) the default setup was terrible. The track seemed ultra slippery and it was taking 2 laps to get any heat into the tyres, and even then I had understeer into the corners and snap oversteer on the exits. Much adjusting of diffs/dampers and shocks and I arrived at a point with 10 mins left when I said "well, I will have to drive this how ever bad it is"  Undecided As a final desperate move I actually changed the final drive ratio just before going to the grid, something that 99% of the time ends in disaster.
I'm not sure that it made much difference to an already unpredictable car !! The gas pedal had to be treated with the utmost respect and care or the car would bite back. scared

I think I jumped a place off the grid and exited T1 in 4th spot. Tris and Axel were dicing up front and I was tucked in behind Phil. With the cold tyres I was focused on just staying with Phil for the first few laps without throwing the car into a gravel trap. I suspect that there was a small incident behind because suddenly I had 100mtr gap back to Tom?, which removed the pressure in the mirrors.

I was ( almost) able to live with Phil's pace but TBH I was close to my limit and the car seemed determined to snap left or right out of each corner and end my race. Then we saw yellow flags into T1 and as I turned in I saw Axel's car just moving off the inside grass. Not Axel's fault at all, but I instinctively altered my line to stay wide and avoid any possible contact. Unfortunately my car did not like that move and promptly under steered off into the gravel!!! By the time I had recovered ( and gave thanks for the gap back to the chasing group) Phil was gone and I think Axel had quit?

The rest of the race was a slow dangerous chase after Phil As the fuel level dropped the car did behave a little better, so maybe my spring rates were wrong, but I never got within a straight's length of catching him anyway. I see that my Blue Moose teamie Doni scored a good finish too Wink

Grats to Tris and a great consistent drive by Phil. These cars are proving to be both challenging and entertaining, thanks Bill.

Good fun on a very difficult circuit.  Many bemoan the serpentine at Mexico yet applaud the uphill twists here at Suzuka.  Can't say why one gets the nod over the other.

Nice job by Phil to score P2. Blue Moose mate, Evil Clive, nails down P3.  Great stuff, chaps!

Tom aced me for P4 mid-race with a dynamite pass going into the 130R and there was nothing I could do to counter-attack.  He just edged away to a solid finish.  Earlier, I was under assault from Andreas and a slip on braking on Lap05 for the hairpin had me slide by the apex and in rounding the corner on a wide line, made contact with AG's RR tyre.  Poor Andreas did a 360° spin but was able to continue.  Sorry, AG.  Late in the going, Andreas charged back and was clearly making it known that he wanted the place back coming within 3/10 of doing so.  Nice recovery, AG.

Kinda sad to see the 'On Track' laps stat.  Seems only Tom and I were the only ones to make an effort to negotiate the chicane properly and even then, at barely 60%.

Thanks to Billy for organizing the series!  It's been FUN!  Smiley

No defence for not negotiating the Chicane properly for me, but I found it VERY difficult to see the entry kerbs as they were completely 2D.

I forget how may times I totally misjudged the turn in point for the first apex, either running too deep and struggling to make the 2nd apex, or anticipating the turn in too early and totally cutting the corner.

Maybe if they were slightly raised and solid 3D it would a) allow drivers to actually see the way in and out..and b) a raised kerb would deter any corner cutting?

Hello, Clive!  Smiley

The Casio Chicane is poorly constructed but may well be the best it can be.  Not to be slagging the author but it really is 3rd-rate.  As you say, perhaps some elevated curbing would improve things.

I've had a quick look at the replay to see what line I took at the Casio chicane. On the 2 laps that I was not [Off the track] (according to the GPL Replay Analyser) I negotiated the chicane without touching the kerbs. On the rest of the laps I was riding the kerbs (which is allowed, providing at least 2 wheels remain on the tarmac). I don't think I had more than 2 wheels off the track at any one time but I can't be sure without checking the whole replay.

I agree the chicane is not well made and it would be better if the kerbs were high enough such that the fastest line is the one that does not ride the kerbs. But like Doni, I don't want to criticise the track builder. Provided we all adhere to the same rules the racing is fair.

LOL I am not in any way criticising the track builder, geez if I tried to build an oval, it would come out square!!! Those guys ( take a bow Pete) are gods and I for one am glad that there are guys far smarter than me around GPL to provide the content.

I have not looked to see how bad my record was, but I know that there were a few misdemeanours  Roll Eyes when basically I just totally misjudged it. In fact I seem to recall one lap where I momentarily considered bailing out and going across the gravel trap!!!  TBH I think that I was so clumsy through that part that regardless of cutting, or not cutting, I was losing time. Certainly for the few laps following Phil I lost lap time through the chicane by getting a very clumsy and slow exit, partially down to the rear end refusing to stick, but more about going in too fast and compromising my exit line and having the wrong gear ratios.
Probably good that it was a fun race and no moderating is required as that could have been a headache for someone  blink

You're probably right Clive. It is a difficult corner to get right because it is almost blind. I had trouble spotting the turn-in point for the first right hander. The second part of the turn is just a hard left (full lock for me with my wheel settings) where the line is totally dependent on the first turn. Get the right hander wrong and the rest of the chicane is a write-off.
