UKGPL Summer Break – 1965 F1 – Funrace -  Targa Florio - Aug 20

Our Summer Fun with long track reaches its highlight - The Targa Florio, it was an open road endurance automobile race held in the mountains of Sicily near the island's capital of Palermo. Founded in 1906, it was the oldest sports car racing event, part of the World Sportscar Championship between 1955 and 1973. While the first races consisted of a whole tour of the island, the track length in the race's last decades was limited to the 72 kilometres (45 mi) of the Circuito Piccolo delle Madonie, which was lapped 11 times.
A fantastic ride with these little cars  - should provide some FUN Wink

IMPORTANT

Quote
Please start your last qualifying lap with minimum ~ 30min time left!
GPL will shut the quali after ~11min overtiming, even if you are 100m from the finish line!

We will do "only" one racing lap, (but the server will show 2) so please be cooperative when a faster car/driver is behind you.

Unlimited resets will be allowed - please be carefull to not endanger others.
When you crossed the finish line after the race lap - please stop your car and leave the track within 500m.

I had to quit. Too many mistakes and then I stopped enjoying it. What a track though! Having built just three tracks, I'm in awe of the work here. Each 100 yds of track must have taken MONTHS to make. Good effort!

Grats to all finishers.

Agreed Pete, it must have been a monumental effort to produce this track.

I did my one race lap and pulled over within 500 metres. However everyone else is carrying on to complete 2 laps Huh

I wondered what happened to you Pete, i ws enjoying trying to catch you, twas less fun after you left... i lost all concentration in the last sector, had to do about 5 Shift Rs....

How did they build this track... how did they drive it for real... how did I manage with only wine to drink.... :-)

Simply put, we must hold two annual race against the clock events.
PRO mode, we did it for 6 years in Clandestines, it's possible!!! And it puts you a lot of adrenaline, just 1 lap.
But anyway, one way or another, the important thing is that we hold an event in Targa every year and with greater emphasis, a multi-league event. Because all the people who worked for years on this work deserve it.
and big run , Tristan, Axel and Phill!!!!!

Edit: two events, I mean Targa and Isle of man

Very disappointed with my 41'03
I was doing 39'30 during tests, the morning before.

But there were some explanations :
- after 1 or 2 minutes of the race, contact with GregT stuck in the middle of the road ...and restarting just when I arrived
- then half of the race with Baab, quicker than me but with 3 or 4 times off the road and each time restarting behind me so I had to slow to let him pass again and again.

But this track is really nice and it should have been a great  work to build it.

Congrats Tristan, Axel, and Phil!

I apologize for whatever mess I made early in the race. I ran a little wide and lost control of the car. I also apologize if I caused any problem late in the race when I stopped. My TV screen turned black and then displayed the message that it had no signal.

This was two firsts for me. It was the first time I drove one of the 65 cars here. And it was the first time I've driven Targa Florio using 4k (3840X2160) resolution.

I had intended to drive the Ferrari. I thought I could install the Dino graphics for it but then I found those graphics are for the 66 mod. Then I decided my best bet was the BRM with my Nurburgring setup. It was good except I needed 2nd and 3rd gear closer to 1st gear.

I installed a new nvme drive in my computer, installed the latest windows 10 iso, and thought I found the best gpu driver I've used for the Vega 11 gpu in my Ryzen processor. I had not been able to use 4k resolution prior to this race. I did get a few stutters where the frame rate dropped to 57 fps. I don't know why my screen turned black once in qualify and once to end my race. In qualifying I had to sit on the side of the track for 5 seconds or so until I could get the picture to return. I could not get the TV to display again in the race. After I ESCed out of the car and GPL, I was able to restore the picture by unplugging the HDMI cable from the computer and then replugging it. I have no idea why this happened. In windows, I had the screen set to turn off after 3 hours. I assumed that was after 3 hours of no detected mouse or keyboard use. I now set it to never turn off. I hope I can get this to work reliably. I wonder if I need a better HDMI cable. The gpu driver I installed gave me the best computer performance I've seen yet except for the loss of signal.

My apologies again. Thanks for letting me join. If I can't get my computer working reliably, I can still boot into my old install and use 1080p resolution.

GL and it's amazing how things have progressed, Greg.  My early experience with a Beta GPL, used the primative, boxy '67 models, on their default, minimal tracks, and no more than an 800 x 600 screen.  With 10 Ai, framerate for a modest 1998 Win 3.1, perhaps 5-15 fps, and cars drove as if on grippy ice.

TARGA :
=======
I was aquainted with some of the track building team, and their genius in building this track.  An early hurdle was a desire to accurately recreate the entire track layout.  A video camera was driven around everything that remains, and photo's used for the visible, and now invisible sections.  This all had to be pinpointed to it's proper place, and time! Shocked

The work was then divided up into sections, with different builders taking on different sections.  When ready, they were all then stitched together - the track, and not the builders. It's my guess Ginetto was Master builder, to co-ordinate the process, and provide the visual continuity each needed when combined.  The candle must've burned late into the night!

Permission was later granted, after a respectfull period, for other Sim's to revamp the work.  A much lesser task. This will ensure that such incredible labour will be around to please many more racers for decades to come.  But I've not seen a better looking rendition than our own original version.  Pure genius. thumbup1

Having read Martin's account on how the track was built, I'm even more convinced that we should adopt JonnyO's suggestion and use this track more frequently. Perhaps another mini series in the 2024 summer break (July/August) would be possible. I've enjoyed Cookie's selection of long tracks in his Fun series, perhaps we should do it again next year Smiley

Hope the Flu is soon worse, and you are a better Bernie.  I don't have a link, as SRMZ is no more,  Someone will assist.  I've a link to an onboard lap with an expert, and live commentary.  Impressive stuff!  His  primary rival at race end, has a name we all recognise : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKTNZyEYtWc

You might prefer to explore the track for yourself first.  Be sure to pick a good car before you dive in, or you'll soon start suffering from the bends. helpsmilie

Get it here Bernie.

If you've never driven it before, you will be amazed.

Thanks for letting me back past David, I'm not sure how many times it was, could have been three, but I left the race fairly early on, not even completing the first segment, didn't make a tight left onto a bridge and when attempting to drive through the abyss GPL CTD'd.

I was questioning the choice of track before the race and still haven't driven it all, but kudos to the track builders, it looks great and as Pete n Phil mentioned, must have been a lot of hard graft.

Cheers,

Bob
