UKGPL Summer Break – 1965 F1 – Funrace -  Brno 49 - Aug 27

For the last race of the summer break "long tracks" series, we visit Brno in Czechoslovakia. The original circuit which dates from 1931 was approximately 18 miles (29 km) of public roads on the outskirts of Brno. The start was located in Bosonohy and it ran in an anti-clockwise direction through Kejbaly, Libusino, Kohouvotice, Žebětín, Ostrovacice and Veselka. The circuit retained this layout until 1937 when war brought racing to a close. In 1949 Brno re-opened and on 25 September 1949, a Grand Prix race was held on the street circuit.  The race was run clockwise on a shorter 11.1 miles (17.8 km) layout, which turned right at Veselka, bypassed Ostrovacice and entered Žebětín from the south rather than the west. In spite of a crowd in excess of 400,000 people, this would be the last Grand Prix for cars on the old street circuit.

A fantastic ride with these little cars  - should provide some FUN Wink

That was fun. I benefited from the mistake of others on L1 but soon got chased down by faster machinery. I'm happy to get P5 in the Cooper and well done to Jonny for getting past - I didn't stand a chance against your Brabham on the last lap. Also a PB of 5:56 in the little Coop Smiley

Grats to the pods and thanks to Cookie for organising these 'long' events.

I had a wheel fall off before the race had even started!  My Office chair is in need of a rebuild. Roll Eyes  Some fast work by the mechanic meant a pitlane start was avoided.

A high speed pileup on lap 1, at those fast left hand kinks, gave the chance to see the extra pace the faster cars have here.  The Cooper is maximum fun, without maximum speed.

Attempting to cling onto those ahead, several corners briefly avoided me as I trundled rearward.  Some wider, cooler, front tyres are ordered for next year.  Seating undercarriage needs a redesign!

This has been a good, and challenging Summer series.  Thanks to Cookie for keeping us race ready. Cool

Congrats Leo and Axel!

It seems like it's been a long time since I drove this track. I seemed to have forgotten a few parts of it, but it didn't take long to remember. If I didn't know this track so well, I never would have done as well as I did.

The 65s were very weird to me. It took a long time to get my braking points good. I am accustomed to braking much earlier than I needed to in the 65 BRM. I was often braking too early and then turning in too early.

I apologize Leo and Axel for bumping both of you. At least, I was able to brake hard enough to keep from wrecking either of you. I need more practice in these cars if I want to be safe. I shouldn't be driving these cars in points races. Luckily, I prefer 3+ liter engines so you won't see me much in these cars.

Thanks for hosting these race Axel. I would have preferred a different mod, like 71 Can Am, but you made the right choice to increase the number of drivers.

Thanks for the fun gentlemen. I appreciate it.

You know that some people are different
Now ain't that a crying shame
Now wouldn't it be a real drag if we were all the same
