Moderator's Report

A dominant win for Greg Taber after overtaking Phil Thornton at the start. Phil hung on to claim second place from a hard charging Tom Johnson.

0h13m26s
Lap 9 – South Bank – Cookie and Maddog
Cookie makes a mistake at Paddock Hill Bend which gives Martin an opportunity to overtake up the inside on Pilgrim’s Rise. Cookie fights back and the cars are side-by-side around Druids, they swap sides around Bottom Bend and are side-by-side again on the run through Bottom Straight. As they enter South Bank, Cookie is on the inside with Martin alongside but with his nose in front. Martin moves towards the apex and Cookie hugs the inside kerb. As Cookie applies the power, his rear end steps out and contact is made. Cookie continues but Martin is punted wide and off the track.

Martin was slightly ahead on the entry to South Bank but he had not completed the overtake. It is accepted that it is very difficult to maintain a wide line in this situation because for lap after lap drivers get used to taking the racing line. However, Martin needed to stay on his own side of the track before moving over.

Cookie keeps a very tight line at South Bank but applies too much throttle and the rear steps out.

Both drivers were fighting hard and whilst both drivers could have backed off a little, neither driver was totally to blame. Had Martin stayed wide or Cookie not applied too much throttle, contact would not have been made. In these situations, it is normal to declare a contested overtake where neither driver was wholly at fault for the incident.

Racing Incident.

UKGPL Season 43 - 1971 Can-Am - Brands Hatch - Sep 5

The first race in the 1971 CanAm series finds us at Brands Hatch in Kent. The first race to be held at Brands Hatch took place on 16th April 1950, it featured 500cc cars competing over a version of the "Indy" circuit (without Druids Hill Bend) in an anti-clockwise direction. During the 1950s the track was extended to include Druids Hill bend, Paddock Hill bend and the racing direction was changed to clockwise. It wasn't until 1960 that the full Grand Prix circuit was created. The British Grand Prix has been held at Brands Hatch on 12 occasions and the European Grand Prix has been held there twice.  The 1967 Grand Prix was won by Jack Brabham and the 1968 race by Jo Siffert driving a Brabham Repco BT19 and a Lotus-Cosworth 49B respectively.  There have also been numerous non-championship Formula 1 races most notably the Race of Champions in 1967 which was won by Dan Gurney in the Eagle-Weslake T1G.

Please check the Season 43 details regarding rules and the 1971 Can-Am Championship pages in particular.

You have to "drive each car once!"
Only one Shift-R is allowed !!!

ROLLING START

As we all know CanAm allways made rolling starts...

We do a ~80mph (130kmh) rolling one line start to the exit of Bottom Bend

SRMZ is gone Roll Eyes

It's like the SC with much more downforce - needs stiffer wheelrate.
Wing is on all 4 wheels same !!! it does not affect balance Wink

A late edit from our Moderator announces Rolling starts for this Series.

Standing starts offer maximum excitement, and perhaps maximum risk.  One reset is allowed here without a pitstop penalty - risk is reduced.  Less excitement at the start means some will go elsewhere to race before Season's end, as has hppened previously with rolling start.

I'm probably not going to make all these races so I decided to take a decent car. No point in getting to the end of the series and to have only driven the slowest cars. Given the car advantage I was lucky enough to get pole position, but it was the car not the driver.

In the race I decided to aim to finish rather than go all out and try to beat Greg who I expected to have a much better race pace than me. So after an eventful start (I think Greg missed the rolling start notice, so he nearly rear-ended me off the line as I pulled gently away) I tried to build a gap back to Tom and then keep the car on the tarmac. A wheel on the grass in these cars can be catastrophic. I managed to stay calm and finish the race with no mishaps.

I used the default setup (which had the wing set at the max 15 degrees) but I lowered 3rd and 4th gears as they were a bit long for this track. I got my fuel calculation badly wrong, I had 10 gallons of fuel in at the end Roll Eyes.

Yes, sorry for my late announcing the rolling start - but a training this afternoon reminded me...

These cars never did standing starts!

I was involved in the development of the Can-Am's we race, and they were made and tested to race off the grid.  Standing starts were a North American thing, and not a Can-Am thing.  A part of the fun of racing is the challenge. helpsmilie  Practice makes perfect.

Historically correct these cars never started standing!

Even the Interserie in Europe did rolling starts in 1973...

If you want standing starts - just organize a series Roll Eyes

I had to quit early  from the race as the heat and the sweat in my small room was reaching ridiculous levels. I am sure that it was impacting on my usually silky smooth driving style  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes!!.
I found myself becoming more and more irritated by my own small mistakes, which usually led to bigger incidents and contact with the scenery.

I realised too late ( on the grid) that I did not have the virtual mirror and only had a single small mirror on one side of the car, so I apologise if I cut across anyone during my few laps. Probably just as well that I exited early.

I am sure I have asked this before , but where can I find the carset with the virtual mirror included? Looks like Fran needs the same info.

I am not an authority on this,  but I think the virtual mirror was included as an optional extra in the 'update' patch CA71_Update_Patch.rar.

If you had already installed this,  check under your \gpl\cars\canm71\   area.   In each car folder, there could be a Virtual mirror   folder  (as well as a Non-virtual mirror).   Copy this file & overwrite (or rename the original first Smiley )  the one in the parent folder.
