Season 43 - 1955GP - Round 2 – Brands Hatch

The second race in the 1955 Grand Prix series finds us at Brands Hatch in England. The first race to be held at Brands Hatch took place on 16th April 1950, it featured 500cc cars competing over a version of the "Indy" circuit (without Druids Hill Bend) in an anti-clockwise direction. During the 1950s the track was extended to include Druids Hill bend, Paddock Hill bend and the racing direction was changed to clockwise. It wasn't until 1960 that the full Grand Prix circuit was created. The British Grand Prix has been held at Brands Hatch on 12 occasions and the European Grand Prix has been held there twice.  The 1967 Grand Prix was won by Jack Brabham and the 1968 race by Jo Siffert driving a Brabham Repco BT19 and a Lotus-Cosworth 49B respectively.  There have also been numerous non-championship Formula 1 races most notably the Race of Champions in 1967 which was won by Dan Gurney in the Eagle-Weslake T1G.

Sorry - real life keeps getting in the way. No race for me today. Pity as I was going to win. Please award me 50 points anyway. Thanks.

Got a good start and pinched second from Clive. He was all over my gearbox for a couple of laps, I stayed wide numerous times when I thought he was in my inside. Eventually he got through on Paddock Hill Bend but then promptly gave me the place back when he went wide at Druids. By this time Evil had built up quite a lead and I wasn't sure I could reel him in or keep Fulvio and Doni at bay; they were right on my tail. It was all for nothing anyway. The engine blew a lap later (GPL said clutch but the car was smoking and missing badly) and race over. Pity, that was shaping up to be a good race.

Points on the board!  lol   I had forgotten just how much fun this is, even at the back.  I've only had the 55 installed for a couple of days so clearly I need to work on that drifting technique, and handle these pesky brakes better, but very glad I managed to not tangle with the leaders as they came past.  OK two weeks to learn Brno49.  Smiley

Well done! An impressive result to finish a Pro race in the 55s with only a couple of days to get used to the rather unique cars. Brno49 will be tough, it is a long track with minimal run-off. Good luck learning the track  thumbup1

True but I'm not too sure about where your gearbox might have been.  I thought it was somewhere near your feet or perhaps you would have been sitting on it?

Anyway, by the time that I got the move done on Phil, I had no brakes and went to visit the barrier at Druids.

After a start like that, my brakes were never in the state that I would have liked and I owe someone an apology for a contact at Druids a lap or so later.  I will look at the replay. I waited on the grass and let someone through but I'm not sure that he was my victim.

I managed to climb to 4th by the end but it takes its toll on the brakes when you have to overtake another car, even when they were all as well behaved as they were in this race.

Congrats to Evil, Fulvio and Doni.

That's two out of two that I have messed up now!

After the rather gutting last lap calamity at Aintree it was pleasing to get a good result at Brands.
Grats to Fulvio and Doni who, once the early laps had sorted themselves out, were always close enough to keep me awake.

Also big congratulations to Roo who wrestled with these 55 cars in a PRO race after only a couple of days practice and brought the car home to score points!! These machines are totally different to any other GPL carset and IMHO require their own special driving technique. Those wet paper brakes and skinny tyres are just one step above useless and at Brands I was yellow/red for the whole lap, relying on downshifts with lift and coast to get me into the corners. Roo has already spotted the need for drifting, which when you get it right works really well. When you don't it does not end well  Roll Eyes

I did my quali lap on race fuel as I was seriously concerned about the pace that Phil and Clive Loynes were showing and I needed to know that I could match them when the race proper started. I think my start was almost perfect, a little wheelspin when I dropped the clutch and the engine then not quite bogging down. In fact I was too quick into Paddock Hill Bend and had to run a wide line dicing with the grass verge. but at least it avoided any possible contact with a car sneaking up my inside.
I did push hard for the first few laps to build a buffer, which was working fine until I felt that I could relax a little...and promptly made some stupid errors. Fortunately I had a big enough lead to retain the lead but Fulvio was now large in my mirrors. So I had to work hard again to build that comfy buffer.
Kudos to Roo for being aware of cars coming to lap him. If this was your first on-line race that would be an easy thing to have tripped up on. I suspect that when you get your driving socks on you will be a contender  Wink

You were very close but you didn't make a rash move and you made a safe and measured pass. Thanks for that, there is nothing worse than being punted off my someone making an ill-judged speculative move. The only time we got a bit too close was at Dingle Dell on lap 1. I saw a green car in my mirrors and thought it was you but it turned out to be Fulvio. So when I took the racing line I was lucky not to clip your front wheel. Sorry about that. What makes these cars so hard to drive is that it is very difficult to correct a mistake once you are committed. There are no brakes to get you out of trouble if you decide a move was not on. There is no backing out.

Not hard to score this one over at GPLWeekly.  An easy 5/5.

WOOHOO!  Evil Clive scores a superb win and after the calamity of Aintree, it could hardly be more welcome.  Well done, champ!

Fulvio a splendid run to P2.

My run a near-perfect effort to P3 with no major errors but somewhat lucky in that others ran into grief.

On the grid, Jonny was directly ahead and knowing that his Gordini gets a pitiful launch off the line, he pulled left and let me pass cleanly.  Clay was on the right ahead and got a poorish getaway, too, allowing me to split the pair right up the middle.  Two places gained before T1.  Can't be bad.  Up ahead, it was looking like British marques were going to have sweep of the podium places with Evil Clive, Phil, Clive Loynes and Fulvio all aboard the green cars.  Lap03 and major dramas as Clive Loynes overshoots Druids by a ton and shunts off.  Clay was hot on my tail but he came to misfortune in South Bank by dropping a wheel off on the infield and being helpless to avoid a major hit on his chances.  Two challengers down in a matter of a few seconds.  Lap04 and it would seem that Phil was sporting the same engine that Evil Clive used at Aintree.  From a solid P2, the engine went on to 2-1/2 cylinders.  Sigh...  No option other than just pull over and weep.

All this left me with a tidy P3 and not far behind Fulvio.  For the next 20 laps, I did my best to challenge but came up short.  A couple of times, I was right on FP's tail but he held strong and prevailed.  Got to the line just a second behind after a breath-taking race.

Clive Loynes recovered for P4 and Gentelman Jonny nabbed P5 and this after falling to dead last on Lap01 after a hip check into the bales at Paddock.  OUCH!  Nice recovery, JJ!  Clay managed a P6 which just as easily could have been a podium if the fates were kinder.

Edit: Nice job by the lapped cars to give way cleanly.  Well done.

I must admit that I love the Gordini, the difficulty in putting its soft engine with little torque at an appropriate speed choice, this leaves a grace and challenge for this little brave.
I was happy with the quality and having Doni behind me was a guarantee of a successful maneuver, we have telepathic communication!
But in the first corner I almost ruined the drivers' race, I simply didn't know there was someone next to me and I didn't give myself enough space, luckily I was the only one who got hurt. Still, the brave Gordini showed no damage in the accident.
Afterwards I managed to have a good pace and I thank several drivers who gave me passage, especially Rainier, who patiently let me pass twice, the first time I passed and left the track after two curves and immediately returned behind Ranier, who patiently gave me gave space again.
I'm sorry Rainier and thank you!
Then, when I reached the end of the race, 5th position was more due to luck of gaining positions due to the mistakes of those ahead.
