Moderator's Report

Server replay time: 0h20m00s

Colin seems to have big problems with the monster M8F and slides wide in the righthander to the Opelkurve, with little throttle in a wide line he tries to rejoin the track. Fran comes from Sachskurve and can see for long time the meandering orange M8F, he drives his line and even leaves the track nearly fully where Colin wants to rejoin. If the collision had been on track, it would have been a bad rejoin, but 1m off track....
So this is a joke to report!

UKGPL Season 43 - 1971 Can-Am - Hockenheim - Oct 17

The next race in the 1971 CanAm series finds us at Hockenheim in Germany. In 1965, when the new Autobahn A 6 separated the village from the main part of the track, an updated version of Hockenheim circuit was built, which incorporated a new "Motodrom" stadium section. Two fast chicanes were added after Jim Clark was killed on 7 April 1968 in a Formula 2 racing accident.  A small memorial was placed at the site of his accident near the first chicane. In order to improve safety even further, the track was lined with crash barriers in 1970. But the track was still dangerous and claimed the life of Patrick Depailler in 1980. So in 1982, the first chicane was made slower and a third chicane was added at the Ostkurve (east curve). In the early 2000s, Formula 1 officials demanded the 6.823 km (4.240 mi) track be shortened and threatened to discontinue racing there.  So the state government of Baden-Württemberg secured the financing for a redesign by Hermann Tilke ready for the 2002 German Grand Prix. The new "Tilke Track" was not universally popular and many drivers preferred the long circuit. Sadly the old circuit was torn up and replanted with trees thereby preventing any chance of reinstating the long circuit for Formula 1 or indeed using it for historic car races.

Please check the Season 43 details regarding rules and the 1971 Can-Am Championship pages in particular.

You have to "drive each car once!"
Only one Shift-R is allowed !!!

ROLLING START

As we all know CanAm allways made rolling starts...

Thanks, Axel. Much shorter FB distances with lots of pop-ups but much more stable and no CTDs. Thanks.

I'm most likely a DNE for this round, chaps.  My chip is overheating thanks to a fan going US.  The box goes in for service Tuesday morning and it's doubtful that it will be put back right in time.  Have fun!  Smiley

I just had a quick off-line test and I had a CTD too. So I downloaded Cookie's folder and I concur with Pete, it does seem more stable. Thanks Cookie!

We had big problems in 2011 with the GT37 there

So Ginetto made some tweaks to get this track working with the heavy poly mods, I never had problems then...

yet another race trotting around at the back. i was in the mix at the start, which I found surprising - my speed on teh straight seemed to be 10-15 Mph slower than those around me, but I kept with them in the draft. Once i lost that I was screwed... is the Mclaren a slow Canam, or did I miss some important part of setup (basically used default)Huh

About Lap 4 whomever was in front of me had a off and took me out, so that put me down the listings. A few laps later I spun and lost the cars in front of me. Then, after another spin, I saw someone in my mirror so let them pass, then tried to jump on their tail to get draft...I did not see another car in mirror (does it only show one car?) and pulled out causing contact - apologies to whomever that was. After that I was just trying not to be lapped... which I managed with minimum dignity... looks like the lads at the front had a lot more fun  - congrats

I did most of the practice on race fuel but with 20 mins to go I stuck in some qually fuel and I was surprised to put the Lola on pole. Not that it would be an advantage here given the long straights! I used the default setup but dropped the wing from 15 to 12 degrees, everything else (apart from a 9:1 steering ratio and 36 gallons of fuel) was default. (Note to Arf, I find the default setups OK but I think I am the exception. Greg has some good setup advice see here). I was surprised to keep the lead after the rolling start. I had Clive all over my gearbox for the first 3 laps and then he took a bite out of it on the exit of the Ostkurve on lap 4. Thankfully after a couple of spins I collected the car and we were both away again but behind Enrique, Pete and Tom. I pushed hard and caught them up. Then thanks to a altercation between Pete and Enrique, I got on the back of Tom and Pete down the long straight and the super quick Lola breezed into the lead once again. I was managing to keep Pete at bay thanks to the Lola's excellent top speed but the engine expired and I had to take a shift-R. I'm not sure if I was revving the car too much but the shunt on lap 4 probably didn't help. Anyway battle resumed with Enrique until he went off in the in-field. Then I had Clive on my tail again. His McLaren had better low end torque so he got the drop on me out of turn 1, but once the Lola got rolling I was able to get past easily on top speed. Clive spun out on the in-field and so I was free to try to make in roads into Pete and Tom's lead but I couldn't. The extra fuel possibly made the difference (I finished with 18 gals in the tank) but Tom's fastest lap suggests they were just too quick. I was lucky to hang onto third. Enrique was catching me fast. I'm on top of the table at the moment but I can't see myself staying there once Greg gets back  Shocked

A very interesting race, I really liked it despite my mistakes and the blow I received, but it was fun.
I fought the entire race, I was the leader for about 3 laps, I was 3, I was 5 and I finished 4, but due to my own mistakes, when I was about to enter the draft zone, from the first two places, I made a mistake and they passed me 4th and 5
And it was an endless battle against Phill (same car) and the Ferrari, which was going very well.
congratulations to everyone, it was a very interesting race, and I learned a lot about the behavior of the car and how the drafts are handled in this mode,
thanks for everything, see you next time Wink

A surprise win for me at this one  Grin

I was nervous at the start as I was third on the grid. So far this season, that starting position has resulted in a very short race and some hay-bales; but not this time. The Shadow is a mightily fast car but slip-streaming is the key to a good race at Hockenheim. As Enrique said, there are a whole bunch of skills to learn racing these cars. Early laps were good but I was being cautious until the tyres were up to temperature as I was determined to get past that lap 3 curse. Close racing with Phil and Enrique but they suffered from half-spins and a blown engine. Tom and I spent most of the evening locked in battle at the front as we switched positions every couple of laps, each driver trying to work out where the best place was to make a move.

Ideally, you need to be in the lead as you head into the Stadium section on the last lap. Barrelling down to that section on the last lap at over 200mph with a nice tow from Tom, I could risk a move up the inside. How late dare I brake and still make the inside line? Phew! Did it. (I did nearly push my load-cell brake pedal through the floor).

Huge respect to Tom for such professional driving all race. That really was a do-or-die move by me for the victory and I'm glad that I could pull it off cleanly knowing that Tom would NOT cut in if I had the inside line. Looking at the replay, I can see that our polygons did get intertwined but the GPL crash-box was kind to us both. What a race!

Thanks for organising this series and thank you to Cookie for providing the CTD-free version of this track.

Grats to all finishers and to Phil for continuing to lead us all in the Championship.

Grats to the podium guys.

As has been said ..some great racing in these monsters. I confess that I was impressed/surprised/frustrated by the top end speed of Phil's Lola. He is dead right that I was quicker out of the corners than he was and I was having to feather the gas to avoid his tail. Apologies for the nudge after 3 laps Phil, I was lining up a possible pass after the Ostkurve. I realised what was happening later in the race. It became clear that you were running different ratios in your Lola compared to my Macca and just when I had the gas nailed in 2nd on the exit of corners, you were upshifting. This caused your car to hesitate fractionally which is why I adopted the "draw alongside and wave at the nice man in the Lola" technique. But there was no doubting your top end speed, it must have been 10kPH more than I had even without a tow??!!
After a dumb mistake in the Stadium section and losing touch with the leaders ( basically I ignited my left rear and was like a drunken shopping trolley for 2 laps before it returned to give some grip) I had a tremendous chase of the leading group. Then when I had caught them and could sniff the chance of a podium I span the car again  Undecided

The two major "offs" puzzled me as I felt that I drove those corners just like every other lap, and there were also a couple of bum clencher moments at other slower corners ( whereas in the Ostkurve the car was nailed to the track). A little research has revealed that my Fanatec gas pedal is haunted. Watching the PROPERTIES panel for the pedals shows some weird stuff when I lift off. Instead of returning to zero every time it shows the gas dancing around between 0-20% for about 5 secs??!!!. In these beasts sudden changes on the gas pedal just spin up the rears and do not improve handling, that's my excuse anyhoo.

Looks like a strip and clean is in order........unless anyone knows of another reason?

There was definately scope for me to raise my first and second gears a few cogs. That would have helped me out of the slower corners. The car was also a bit lively under braking for the Ostkurve, so perhaps a bit of adjustment of the front toe in might have rectified that. But the car was handling reasonably OK so I didn't want to upset it by fiddling with the setup. I didn't get much opportunity to circulate with other cars in qually so it wasn't obvious my setup was lacking in a couple of areas until the race was underway.

The standard of driving is very high in UKGPL races these days so one tiny mistake is enough to make the difference between a podium and a mid field finish. I'm enjoying driving these machines,  they are a huge contrast with the 55 cars. I find it amazing that there is only 16 years of development between them!
