UKGPL Season 43 - 1971 Can-Am - Silverstone  - Nov 14

The next race in the 1971 CanAm series finds us at Silverstone in England.
Silverstone is built on the site of a World War II bomber base, RAF Silverstone, which opened in 1943. The track hosted the first F1 championship race in 1950. The British Grand Prix has been permanently held here since 1987. The airfield's three runways, in classic WWII triangle format, lie within the outline of the present track. The first two races were held on the runways themselves, with the 1949 International Trophy switching to the perimeter track. This arrangement was used for the 1950 and 1951 Grands Prix. In 1952 the start line was moved from the Farm Straight to the straight between Woodcote and Copse, and this layout remained largely unaltered for the following 35 years. The 1954 British Grand Prix was held at Silverstone and was won by Juan Manuel Fangio in a Mercedes M196 2.5 L8. Fangio raised Silverstone's lap record, breaking the 100 mph barrier with a lap of 100.35 mph. After an outing at Aintree in 1955, the British Grand Prix returned to Silverstone in 1956 when Fangio won again, this time in a Ferrari. Since 1975 the track has been extensively remodelled. Tonight we will be using the 1967 layout.

Sorry to Phil for my self-inflicted spin which took you out. I got away unscathed but a couple of places down. Sorry to see bits of your car bouncing around the start/finish line. I had another spin mid-race which I managed to keep completely private but lost time to the Podium guys. Evil did a great job of catching me as I battled with hot tyres but he gave me an early Christmas present on the last lap. I'm not sure why he was feeling so generous but it looked as though he was having mechanical difficulties.

Keep pushing to the end... it paid of tonight for me. V happy with P4.

Grats to Greg who really knows how to drive these monsters.

Sorry to Phil for my self-inflicted spin which took you out.
Unfortunately I had nowhere to go, perhaps I should have stayed a bit further back and I might have avoided you as Fulvio did. However, if I hadn't been putting you under pressure you probably wouldn't have made the mistake anyway. I had to wait for the entire field to pass before I could take a shift-R. I managed to catch Cookie and I could see Tom and Evil just ahead. I got a good exit out of Chapel and pulled alongside Cookie down the Hangar Straight (well I thought I was alongside, the visibility is bad in these cars) and I tried a pass at Stowe. Cookie was better on the brakes and we made contact. Sorry Cookie, it looks like my fault to me.  I waited for you but when you went off again at the next corner I decided I'd press on and try to finish the race.

Congratulations Fulvio and Enrique! Congrats Enrique and Clive for your fast lap times. I don't know if I could do any better with those cars.

Silverstone seemed like a good place to drive Jackie Stewart's car. I think it might be the most difficult car to drive. It's fast but it's not as easy to set fast laps as the M8F. The Shadow can be difficult to drive too.

I apologize for running you off the track Axel. It appeared you tried to let me pass as you exited turn 1. I ran wide entering T1 so I did not catch you as soon as you might have expected. I was not expecting you to be so slow at T2. I'm glad I didn't hit the back of your car. That would have been catastrophic. I could not feel any contact but it looked like I bumped you off the track.

I wish I had spent more time preparing the T260. I could easily over heat my front tires with the brakes. And although I was driving the car hard in the late laps I finished with my tires under inflated.

Thanks for the fun gentlemen. Take good care of yourselves.
