UKGPL Season 43 - 1971 Can-Am - Zeltweg - Dec 12

The last race in the 1971 CanAm series finds us at Zeltweg in Austria, the original Österreichring. Built in 1969 to replace the bland and bumpy Zeltweg Airfield circuit, the track was known for being very fast, as every corner was a fast sweeper and taken in no lower than 3rd gear in a 5-speed gearbox and 4th in a 6-speed gearbox.  There are also noticeable changes in elevation during the course of a lap which means the downhill sections are even faster. Like most fast circuits it was a hard circuit on engines and even harder on tyres simply because the speeds were so consistently high. The first World Championship round to be held at the Österreichring was in 1970 and the race was won by Jacky Ickx, driving a Ferrari. His teammate, Clay Regazzoni, made it a Ferrari 1-2 by finishing second a mere 0.61s behind. Rolf Stommelen achieved his only podium finish, coming third in a Brabham-Ford. Local driver and championship leader Jochen Rindt started from pole position in his Lotus-Ford, but retired with an engine failure. It would turn out to be Rindt's final Formula One race start.

Please check the Season 43 details regarding rules and the 1971 Can-Am Championship pages in particular.

You have to "drive each car once!"

Well that was rubbish. After managing to bag P2 in qually, I started the race in neutral - sorry to those affected. I had just realised I'd calculated my fuel wrong and had no chance of making the race distance without a shift+R... After a few laps where I appeared to be holding Evil off I made the mistake of looking at my fuel in the middle of a corner and that didn't end well, I rejoined in 7th and after a couple of laps I realised that I must have damaged something because i couldn't get close to earlier pace. After a few more laps I decided to shift R... but thay didn't end well and I lost a front wheel after a couple of laps, game over.

Well done to Greg for the championship and the mods for organising. See you next season.

Good season everyone!

I made a similar mistake and calculated not enough fuel.

I also learned a little about the tire temperatures. The tires seemed to heat up too much. So I changed my driving style mid race. It was not ideal. I can do better in future races.

I had a few distractions in my house, and these days I struggle to focus even when there are no distractions.

I had a lot of fun driving the Can Ams this season. Thanks Cookie for organizing, great track selection for these Can Am beasts.
Good race Dave R. and everyone

Congrats Greg, Doni and Tom!

Congratulations to Greg on another dominant performance and a well deserved championship.

I didn't expect to compete in every round so I left the slowest car until last. I figured there was no point in effectively leaving a fast car in the garage if I'd taken the Porche early and then missed a round. However, my gamble fell apart when I competed in every round and I was left with the Porche for Zeltweg. I was pleased with my pace here but it was obvious in qualifying that I'd struggle to defend my P2 in the championship.

The race started well, I was able to keep Francesco in sight and I eventually passed him for P9 when he made a small mistake. From then on we had a race long battle. I had eeked out an advantage but I ran wide at Hella Kurve and gave the place back to Francesco. Francesco was driving well and I had to push hard to close the 500 yard gap that he had built up. As I closed in I could see Francesco was getting worried because he started to make tiny mistakes and eventually he had a spin and let me through. I had to stay focussed to avoid any mistakes for the last few laps.

When Tom lapped me on the last lap I knew he would beat me in the championship but Enrique leapfrogged me too and I ended up P4 in the championship. Congratulations gents, well deserved.

Well, first the big congrats to Greg for the outstanding win of this championship!

Thanks to Phil's great performance our Antipasti Team made the Team Championship thumbup2

My last race of the season was not bad, but I had overestimated the lame Fezza for this high speed track...
I could not imagine that Ferrari made a worse engine than the customer Chevy Shocked

It was a very mixed season for me, I did lots of testing the upcoming SC71 with a new tyre model (you will love it!)
this can be problematic when you switch between the mods on the fly..

Only dropping in for a moment to say it was a terrific race with my Blue Moose mate, Evil Clive.  Bad luck that he had an off.

Greg a fine win.  Tom closing in fast.

A miserable time for me, actually, as my eyeballs were bad from the day's start and got progressively worse as the day wore.  Not a chance that I'll make the OAO CA71 race this evening.

Excellent season Greg, you took everything in UKGPL, a big congratulations to you, and also a big applause.
About my career, I had a lot of fun against Fulvio and Can Arf (hehehe nice nick name)
In reality, I share very good moments with you, I know that I am made of wood, but I try to run as cleanly as possible, LPG is my drug and it is difficult, stop consuming it..... Wink
This year was very difficult for me, regarding my family situation, I have a mother who is very sick and I spent a lot of time with her and that is why I apologize for not answering the forums on time or not even answering them.
I want to continue sharing with you next season, since it is inevitable that I will leave the GPL.
Thanks for everything guys, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a much better 2024 than 2023
   hugs to all.
sorry in my start in  the race, for a few seconds, forget the rolling start, but 6 seconds after, I remember that ... Grin

Congratulations Doni and Tom! Tom may have been able to beat Doni if he got some decent practice beforehand.

This track suits the M8F well. The Shadow and big Lola did not stand a chance against the mighty McLaren.

This was a good test for me. I had a setup dating from 2014. 30 minutes of practice before qualifying was enough to improve the old setup and drop my fastest lap by 0.5 seconds. The car was prone to over heating the left rear tire if I ran wide, but it was easily manageable.

It was a fun season. I've been wanting to work on my 71 setups for years now. I was able to make improvements and learn a little more about the cars. It's a shame Yannick and Tristan didn't appear. I wouldn't have been surprised if they won more races than me, but I could have given them a good challenge.

Fulvio, I apologize for crowding you at turn 1 on your last lap. Pribluda had me thinking I had another lap to run. I hoped the timing would work well and I could pass you easily and try break into the 1:32s on my last lap. Without that distraction, you would have had a better chance at trying to get Enrique's position.

Congrats to Tom and Enrique on P2 and P3 in the championship! If I wasn't here, it would have been quite a battle for the championship between Tom, Enrique, Phil, Pete, and Fulvio. It was good to see we had a fair number of drivers for this series.

Thanks for the fun gentlemen and thanks for letting me race with you. I appreciate it.
