Season 44 F1 1967 PRIVATEERS – Round 1 –  Interlagos 1971

Autódromo José Carlos Pace, also known as Interlagos, is in the city of São Paulo, in the neighborhood of Interlagos. It is named after Brazilian Formula One driver Carlos Pace, who died in a plane crash in 1977. It has hosted the Formula One Brazilian Grand Prix since 1973.  The race won by defending Formula One World Champion and São Paulo local Emerson Fittipaldi. Fittipaldi won the race again the following year in bad weather and Brazilian driver José Carlos Pace won his only race at Interlagos in 1975.

THERE ARE MORE THAN 19 REGISTERED DRIVERS IN THIS SERIES, SO :
The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please use the Track Gap Freeze Fix Patch V.09 for all on-line races.

Please READ CAREFULLY THE RULES :
A driver must cross the start line in order to register the use of a chassis, participation in qualifying is not sufficient.

The tokens system will be used with drivers being awarded tokens for starting the season and for starting each race. Each car will cost a number of tokens per race.

Drivers are reminded that Lap 1 incidents carry an extra 1 place penalty.

Drivers must complete 50% race distance to score.

MOD PRO so no shift-R

Only reported incidents will be moderated.

Please, excepting emergencies, no chat until Session Completed in qualification. No chat in the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Any setup tips for Interlagos gratefully received, first track I've come across where everything I try drives like a dog's breakfast.  lol

On this version of Interlagos there are some very pronounced "bumps" in the road, which will unsettle your car. Normally everyone drives on the lowest possible ride height, but here I find that slightly higher ride can allow the chassis to absorb the bumps without throwing the car into the boondocks. I always struggle around here and will probably take my nemesis the BRM as am not confident in finishing anyway lol.

Yes I had to raise the ride height & stiffen the front rebound, so many nasty/tricky sections you fix the setup for one, it's a basketcase for the next.  lol

Much the same here. It's a horrible track build
There is another version that looks poor, but is smoother

I tried raising ride height, and it does help a bit, but I'm probably going to take the free car
as it's not worth wasting a good car on a bad track IMHO

There are a few bumps on this track that are hard to see. I use a 60° FOV which does help.

I'll be using the BRM for this race too, not because I don't like the track but because I suspect there will be a few Brazilian drivers in Lotus Fords that will be hard to beat. It is their home track and rather than compete with them in equal machinery, I'd be better saving my tokens for a track where home advantage won't be as great a factor.

I'm no expert when it comes to setups but I've got a BRM setup that is pretty stable on the bumps. I'll post a link to it later tonight when I get a chance to log onto my race PC.

It's a great track choice for the series, just not well made.

Tony ran a very similar version of the old layout (79 variant ? ) in a GTL series, maybe more than once
and I don't rememmber that one having these bumps and dips

Don't know whether it was a port from GPL, or something else, but perhaps it can be ported
from the GTL version to this for possible future event? If someone with more skills than I have wants to have a look

I think it maybe this one: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1sNGAHXkA1MPvexbh7zvRO9lc8_5g7me2

EDIT: I just had a run round the GTL one in a ferrari 330P4, it is the same layout, but looks more accurate, and it doesn't have quite as much trackside furniture.
And though it does have some small dips and crests, it is much much more driveable.

A shame SRMZ is down Roll Eyes, as this was subject of a discussion when Pablo released this track in 2016
afair
He claimed that the track was even more bumpy at the time in 1971!

I understand your complains but most of us got used to it and found a way to handle it by learning the line with the least problems.

Yesterday I tested both, minimum hight and medium hight - my Cooper never bottomed  Roll Eyes but it was smoother with elevated hight Wink

Those super low riders setups where made when the tracks raced were mostly papy, wich had no bumps...

Just look here: you definitely see the big bump you find in GPL

and
it's a big difference if you take a 67 or a winged 69 car!

I remember the struggles on this track! As others mentioned, increasing the ride height a bit, the wheel rates and the dampers, would help keep the car in control. Using softer anti-roll bars to keep the wheels more independent of one another also helps. Also perhaps a more conservative approach with the differential lock on coast and using more clutches, so the car maintains traction off throttle? It's never optimal though, so it's important to be mindful of where exactly those bumps (not really bumps, just crowning in the road from how the track is made) are and apply the necessary amount of throttle so you can shift the balance forward or backward, to avoid unsettling the car. Heavier cars would obviously struggle more with that.

Despite all its flaws, the track provides an interesting challenge as the races becomes a matter of who makes the fewest mistakes and who dares to risk more in those tricky places.

As for what phspok mentioned about GTL, yeah, the track is much better there. I'm not sure either if it's a conversion from GPL, but I think it's just the way the physics are in GTL and the way track surface is modelled, that makes it easier to drive. Haven't seen anyone able to do reverse conversions though, from GTL and other sims back into GPL. GPL's track model (I used to work on an Imola 94 back in the day) is very restrictive and unusual.

Yes it's the same track for everyone so it'll certainly be a challenge to see what the right approach is.  I'll defo test the 'differential lock on coast' idea & see if it gives any improvement.  Smiley

I've done a few laps in a BRM and got my lap time (with Qually fuel) down to 2m53.633s. There is no way I'll keep up that pace consistently without a lot more practice but it shows what can be done with my setup. I need to do a bit more work on it because the front tyre temps are a bit cold so the balance is not perfect but it is drivable and predictable.

I've put the setup and a replay lap on the replays ftp site here.  Cubbie, Matt give my setup a try and see what you think. I would be interested to know if you can beat my time or make some setup improvements. Setups are very personal so mine may not suit you but hopefully is is a better starting point than the default setup.

Hello Phil, how is it possible to change the FOV in GPL ?
I've written some notes on changing the FOV in my GPL Hints and Tips document that is also available via a link on the New Drivers topic.

There are some screenshots of the Interlagos "bump" that Cookie refers to showing it in 78° and 60° FOV. The difference is subtle but it does make a difference IMO. Please bear in mind I've also used the No Letterbox Patch so the screenshots have no black bars at the top and bottom or the screen.
