UKGPL Season 44 - 1966 Can-Am - Oakes Field Nassau - Jan 23The first race in the CanAm 66 series finds us at Nassau in the Bahamas. The first Nassau Trophy Road Races meeting for Sports Cars was held in 1954 on the Windsor Field Course. For 1957, the meeting was moved to another airfield location, the 5 mile Oakes Course, which was closer to the main population areas on the island. The new course, despite being quite bumpy in places, was relatively well-received, though there were a number of close shaves near the pits as it was too close to the racing line. To combat this, the race direction of the track was changed to clockwise in 1958. The circuit was also shortened to 4.5 miles by cutting out the original Blackbeard's Bend and Ecky's Twist, whilst a new left-right-left corner combination was built to connect the Sassoon Straight and Bethell's Pass, cutting out the tight hairpin which had previously taken the cars off the runway. Due to much needed track repairs and the lack of additional funding by the Bahamian government, as well as competition from more races running in December, the event was discontinued after the 1966 meeting. It is the clockwise 4.5 mile Oakes Course that we will be using for tonight's race. Please check the Season 44 details regarding rules and the 1966 Can-Am Championship pages in particular. As Phil has made all links to the tracks in the announcement threads available , I thought it is not necessary to repost...

If I can't find a track, I try to build it Yeah, thanks! Be aware that this CANM66 at Nassau is one of the most challenging events for your pc! It took a while to get it smooth 60fps on the long straight, I will upload my optimized nassau folder: https://www.mediafire.com/file/pus7jahlhqh9kw8/nassau.7z/file

Phew that was a tough race. My core tyre temperatures were fine but I think my patch temperatures must have been on the red quite a lot. It was very easy to miss my braking points and apply a bit too much gas. I settled into a secure 4th place in the early laps. It must have been chaos behind me because after about 4 laps there was a big gap back to 5th place. Lucky for me there was, I made a stupid mistake watching Evil's gearbox instead of my braking point and I sailed off into the bushes. By the time I got back on track, the first 3 were a long way ahead but surprisingly I managed to keep my place. I was able to gradually pull away from the 5th placed car but I couldn't make any inroads into Evil up in 3rd place. That was until the penultimate lap! Evil had made a mistake and hit the haybales. He was struggling to control his damaged car but he was still pretty quick. Unfortunately for him he went wide at T1 on the last lap and gifted me a podium. Unlucky Evil, you deserved the champagne.
Another demonstration drive by Greg and Cookie up front. Well done gents

I first wanna thank Evil Clive for the setup tips, who were originally for CanAm 71, however, they worked decent enough with my McLaren MK1 here. I knew the car was not too fast, especially on the long straights, but I was able to stabilize it and make it as easy as possible to drive. The only problem I still had during the race, after few blind changes just before the start, was dealing with the raw power on acceleration. I need to work more on setting up the car there. I wanted to finish the race without any big mistakes and take as much positions as possible ahead of me, after I started from P15, I believe. Well, after the first lap carnage I was able to move up to P8. However, then I was under attack, or at least it looked like that, so I opened the inside line before one of the slow right hand corners and went into the grass. I was not really under attack, but because of the terrible mirror this car has, I had not enough information what exactly happens behind me all the time. So I ended up stuck behind some tree barriers and was searching for a spot where I can return. Fortunately, I was able to return after maybe 10 seconds, however, I lost 6 positions by doing this. I did not gave up though. And actually I started driving better and better without any mistakes and I was able to catch 3 cars and win back 3 positions. I even made a new personal best. At the end I really wanted to fight Fulvio, few laps before the end the gap was down to 2 seconds, after it was around 6. But I needed to overtake Fran Molteni first. When the later made a mistake, it was too late to challenge Fulvio for top 10. I really wanted the top 10 though. My full stream replay: https://www.twitch.tv/turboracing39
