SEASON 44  -  1967 F2    PROFESSIONALS         Round 3  -  Killarney 1967

Not the Killarney in Ireland, nor the suburb of Johannesburg, but the one near Cape Town named afer a nearby hotel. It first saw F1 cars racing in 1960, when a mixed field was beaten by the two F1 Porsche 718s driven by Stirling Moss and Jo Bonnier. In 1962, Killarney held a non championship F1 race called the Cape Grand Prix. After swapping the lead many times, Trevor Taylor beat Jim Clark over the line in their Lotus 21s. Strong winds blew sand onto the track and several engines were damaged. F1 racing never returned, but the track is still in use today. This track was recreated for GPL by UKGPL's own Francesco Molteni.

Man, for a moment I thought podium was there.  Embarrassed

As Matt Row said in the other thread - such a great track for these cars.

After the decent start of the season, I decided this is a place where I can save some tokens. I decided to give the Ferrari a go, and I was delighted with it. It wasn't that powerful on the straights, but it was very reliable, easy to navigate and solid in the corners.

Practice was good as well. I did a new PB, however, P7 was the best I can take. At the start I was able to make a good start and overtake 1 colleague and then everybody started making mistakes.  Grin And I found myself in P3 with around 6 seconds lead to Pete. He was faster, about 0.5 to 1 second per lap, however, I was ready to fight.

Everything went lose when I was about to lap Doni. He started lifting the gas at the end of the last corner, I went to the right to make the maneuver, however, the car understeered so badly that I almost killed myself. I pressed the brakes aggressively and was able to only clip the edge at the pit entry. However, I spun as well and lost P3. Then I lost concentration and spun 2 more times within the next 2 laps, giving away P4 as well.

From there I started finding the rhythm again and was careful not to be overtaken by Tom.

At the end P5 with Ferrari is not that bad and I am taking some decent points for the championship, plus saving valuable tokens.

Grats to Alain on a great pole, fastest lap and a win, and to Evil Clive and Pete on their podiums.

No problem, Fulvio.  Only cost me a little time with no damage.  My main concern was dropping a wheel into those wretched gutters on Lap16 with a spin into the haybales at the top of the main straight.  It was a significant hit but again, got away without damage.

Dimitar...  Actually, no, I didn't lift in that last corner.  That's as fast as the BT14 will go.  It's down fully 10mph to the F2 cars.  I saw you coming and was bearing to the left on corner exit to give you room when suddenly, you vanished from my mirrors.  Noted in the replay cap that you had quite a moment as you relate above.

Not altogether displeased with my run.  A P11 finish(net P9).

As for those gutters, it is my understanding that Gimli Motorsport Park...coordinates 50.634949612593616, -97.0554776703987...is also so configured with a 10cm...four inch...high step from the racing surface down to the old airfield on which it is based.  Of course, Gimli is most famous for the 'Gimli Glider' incident.  See below...

Nice job for the win, Alain!  You seem to be coming into your own of late.  Good show.  Evil Clive a fine P2.  Pete nailing down the final podium step.  Well done, chaps.

Hello everyone.

Congratulations to everyone as well as Evil and Pete for their good results.
Big fight last night at the start of the race with evil, we passed several turns side by side, it was super fun.
I made several mistakes and I'm lucky to have won because Evil was also fast.

Thank you all, Admins and drivers.
See you soon

hi guys
Just as Dimitri said, the small Ferrari is a very reliable ute and I liked it a lot, I was able to finish 7th and perhaps if I hadn't made those 4 huge mistakes, I would have been able to finish further ahead.
Also what happened is that I arrived from work just around qualy time and since I have a new PC, I did not have the track installed, so I downloaded it and logged into the server, with 30 minutes of time to do a setup and I learned the track, and I think I got the time, but I would have liked to have been able to train a little more, maybe I wouldn't have made those mistakes, but anyway, a 7th position left me very happy.
Well done Alain for the victory, you got rid of the thorn in Sunday's race in mod 67.... Grin
congratulations evil for that 2nd place, you come with a very good season and Pete, with the bronze medal
   see you in the other
