SEASON 44  -  1967 F2    AMATEURS         Round 3  -  Killarney 1967

Not the Killarney in Ireland, nor the suburb of Johannesburg, but the one near Cape Town named afer a nearby hotel. It first saw F1 cars racing in 1960, when a mixed field was beaten by the two F1 Porsche 718s driven by Stirling Moss and Jo Bonnier. In 1962, Killarney held a non championship F1 race called the Cape Grand Prix. After swapping the lead many times, Trevor Taylor beat Jim Clark over the line in their Lotus 21s. Strong winds blew sand onto the track and several engines were damaged. F1 racing never returned, but the track is still in use today. This track was recreated for GPL by UKGPL's own Francesco Molteni.

I should not have driven tonight.
I caught a virus yesterday & not feeling too good. Qualifying was OK but just made a mess of the race.
Thought I had braked nice & early for T1 but ran into the back of a Protos & it just went from bad to worse, so I retired the car. Sorry for interfering with other peoples race.

Hope you get better soon Billy. I have had the cough thats going around.. been coughing for about a fortnight now.. really annoying.

went well Tonight. nearly made the podium. only really made one mistake, missed a gearshift while under pressure from Eric and let him past. but was thinking during our battle that I was perhaps holding him up, and being the gentleman driver he is he didnt try anything that unsettled me. Thanks it was Fun.  Smiley

had loads of good laps with Pepe too tonight.  Smiley

overall a fun race. The BMW lola isnt the fastest but it handles really well. Nice car to Race. And this Track has a fantastic flow.

A credit to you Francesco. a lovely track.  Fantastic. Thanks  Smiley

Fran - I echo what the others have said, this is a fantastic track with the F2 cars!

I wanted to take the Lola, but we just didn't get on well here.  T1 seemed particularly hairy compared to the Cooper.
I figured that consistency over the entire race would be more important,  as long as I didn't lose a tow.

Surprised with starting so far forward. I also did all the Q running with race fuel,  to be ready for the twisty bits.
I was expecting at least the first 4 places to be running in a tight group for a while.

Great time following Matt around until he had a minor off.  I gave him  a cheery wave as I passed, not to be a cheeky S.O.B - but I reckoned I'd see him again in half a dozen laps or so.
Unfortunately for him that didn't happen, but made my evening slightly easier.

Thanks all,  see you next time.

First, as others have mentioned, this is just one great track, especially for F2 cars. I don't think I've ever had so much fun and peace in the hours I spent on- and off-line practicing for this event. I feel like a ping pong ball floating down a river when things are going well. You did a magnificent job here, Francesco, and I'd look forward to taking laps at any track you might construct. Might I suggest that your next project be to modify the original Nurburgring track and make it two miles long?

I had a PB in qualifying which was completely undone by my later entering the track directly in front of Dave, almost an exact repeat of what I did to Billy two days ago. I apologize once again, but this time I mean it.

After taking fourth on the grid and somehow moving up to third because of some problem in front of me, I thought I had a decent chance at a podium finish. But two mistakes, one small and one big, knocked me into sixth and I never really did recover from that. On the last lap I managed to slip past Franceso when he was being lapped by Matt, but I'm never too ashamed to take advantage of another driver's misunderstanding. On GPL Weekly's race rating, I'd give the track 6/6 and my performance 1/6.

I honestly just didn't see you mate. Not until I was about 1 metre away & at that point you were VERY visible!
Looked as though you were keeping towards the right side of the track too.
Apologies for piling into the back of you, luckoly you were just entering the track & didn't waste more time than that.

Was a super track for these cars  thumbup2 The gravel? kerbs were a masochists dream  Grin
I manages pole as Dave was hauling a petrol tanker round with him, made a decent enough start
and then it was Rouen deva vu all over again, Dave a bit quicker in some places, but I was holding on
untill I made a couple of errors, and he got past

After that, was trying too hard, went off a couple of times, then tangled wheels with Cubby while trying to lap him
so waited, and let him get in front again, only for him to throw it off at the next corner  Shocked

Poddled round alone for the rest of the laps, managed fastest lap which was a small consolation prize
Codding good race. Thanks to  Francesco  I Am Not Worthy

Pukekohe is one of my all time fave tracks, so would really like to play on that one

Pepe i was convinced you was one of the first 3 position pilots,so i released a little the gas.Mistake! but is not so important. Some other mistake have influenced my race plus a battle with Reinier that at the end found more speed.Probably was more constant the race of Paul V. considering the result.
What seem weak in this mod is the slipstream effect. On the long straight i gained nothing behind another car.

At the moment i have no track project in mind.I'm more involved in the car livery of the new mod.IMO my best realization in this field was the cars for the canam66,than the Vanwall,Connaught and the 2 Mercedes for the 55,some car for the canam 71 and the Lotus 41b for F2 that was my first work.
The canam 66 was modified by TVO applying an unnatural reflex on the flank that,in  my opinion,is bad on the dark Lola 305.
Now i'm involved in the new GT71(mainly Porsche) and F1 1970.
I have also prepared almost all cars for the GT 1959,mod that i hope to see released one day.

Yes very nice track ...except I don't like the deep sides of the track.
Perfect track for close racing and I had close racing with Pepe and Francesco during all the race.

I think we made several mistakes, probably more from me :
I rearended Pepe at the first left turn after start/finish line and I waited for him and gave him back his position. Pepe is not easy at all to overtake, closing the door and changing direction more than one time ...but this is race ! It's funny to see we have almost the same best lap at 0,001s
Francesco rearended me but maybe I was closing the door, I can't remember exactly what happened.

You should have just kept going, appreciate the intention/sportsmanship but you were after all a lap ahead.
I had another shocker really, missed the tangles ahead on Lap1 only to get rear-ended at T2, suspension was wonky after that & the rear-end twitchy.
Hope my luck begins to change at Hockenheim!
