UKGPL Season 44 - 1966 Can-Am -  Zolder 67 - Mar 5

The 4th race in the CanAm 66 series finds us at Zolder. Built in 1963, Zolder hosted the Formula One Belgian Grand Prix on 10 separate occasions in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as the 1980 Belgian motorcycle Grand Prix. F1 moved to Zolder in 1973 and with the exception of a race at Nivelles-Baulers in 1974, Zolder was the location of the Belgian Grand Prix until 1982. That year, Canadian driver Gilles Villeneuve was killed during qualifying at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix. Villeneuve's Ferrari 126C2 collided at speed with the March of Jochen Mass. The Ferrari was torn up in the accident and when rolling, Villeneuve was thrown from the car.
Please check the Season 44 details regarding rules and the 1966 Can-Am Championship pages in particular.

You have to "drive each car once!"
Only one Shift-R is allowed !!!

ROLLING START

We do a ~100mph (160kmh) rolling one line start to the exit of Kanaalbocht
No passing allowed!
A DQ is the result for ignoring

The link to the track download is allways in the announcement thread Wink

Alain it's GPL!

66CANM is based on 66mod!
Just get a good 66/67s setup and double the wheelrate, shockabsorbers and rollbars , look if the balance is ok and race...

I was looking forward to this one. Unfortunately I messed up my braking into turn 1 on the second and third lap. I think that I did not down shift early enough to assist the brakes.

Good race everyone

Even after I posted in chat about the rolling start, I still went quick off the line. Then realized what I did and got back in line. Then Tris didn't go at the start point and a total disaster happened around me. Great racing with you Clive! I should have just retired in T1 and been done. I let you by Clive, because I didn't think my result would count anyway. I waited for you to catch up for several laps, glad you made it before the finish. Looking back I should have pitted and retired before the last lap. Congrats podium! Later!

Unfortunately Tris didn't read the race announcement and misunderstood what was T4. This caused an almighty crash at the start. Please read the race announcements gents, Cookie went to a lot of trouble to post a picture of the start line which was obviously not read by all the drivers.

As for the race itself, it was a cracker. From 5th to last after the start fiasco. I passed 3 drivers who were also recovering and I started a long climb back up the field. I managed to pick up a few places as drivers crashed out and before long I had Dimi ahead on Pribluda. I had to push very hard but eventually I caught him and I proceeded to climb all over his gearbox in an effort to try to find a way past. The fight went on for several laps before he eventually cracked under braking into T1. Great battle Dimi. I then had a handful of laps to chase down Pete who had built up a bit of a lead whilst me and Dimi were dicing. I managed to catch him at the start of the last lap but there was no way through. Great driving Pete, I had purple time after purple time trying to catch you. Well done  thumbup1

The start was very messy and probably changed what could have been a much closer race for all. I forgot to save the replay, so I will have to get that from the server later in order to see what actually happened.

Tom's rapid start, which he aborted at T1 to allow the grid to pass ironically probably saved him from the mass shunt 2 corners later.

I thought that my cunning plan to use the smallest engine car for this race was great foresight. I had to laugh when I saw the grid and realised that maybe I was not so super smart!!  Roll Eyes
In pre race practice I had rolled a few laps at sub 1:30 on full tanks, but I had also checked the '71 Can Am times and Greg's record was a lot faster, so I was expecting the big bangers to be around 1:26?. My expectations were to be top 5 at best and just pick up a few points and get the small engine out of the way.
After the chaos I emerged behind Axel who had shot through the carnage to take the lead. I was surprised to be able to reel Axel in and was wondering where I might be able to squeeze a pass when he ran wide and had inherited 1st place. But by now I had Tom in my mirrors with his Lola and lots of horsepower.
The rest of the race was a close battle between us as we gradually pulled clear of the field. TBH I was pushing so hard in the Genie that I did not expect it to survive, and fully expected to have to use the single S/R at some point. There were minor errors by both of us and the lead swapped around but I could only stay with Tom's Lola by maximising  the corners, because on the straights the Lola stretched it's legs and eased a small lead.
Until... I ran a little too deep into a corner and had to bounce across the grass allowing Tom to escape.
I reasoned that 2nd was way better than I had expected so I settled my pace for a steady finish.

Then, on the last 3 laps I noticed that the gap to Tom was reducing rapidly??? Was Tom low on fuel? did he have a broken engine?
In fact it was neither, Tom was simply gifting me 1st place as he expected a DQ for his false start.  If Tom does not get a DQ he might regret that decision, but I accept it in the spirit that it was given. I will point out that my race would have been much more boring...but less stressful, if he had told me of his intentions on Lap 2!!  lol

Grats to all who finished and commiserations to those who suffered at the start.

Grats to evilClive (he's extremely evil as of late, winning everything Cheesy ), Tom and Fulvio on a great ride.

Once again my race was very eventful. At the start I was aware where to start racing, as thanks to Cookie I checked the track map and noticed the red line. Unfortunately, after the carnage on lap 1, Phil's car landed on my roof and I was afraid that I won't see the chequered flag.  Grin Fortunately, there wasn't any noticeable lack of performance from my vehicle and I was able to go up to P4 from P8 at the start. Unfortunately, one of my 2 mistakes came at the beginning with cold tires. I was not able to brake well and went a little bit into the grass, which gave Pete the opportunity to take P4. I was not happy with me though, as after he overtook me I was able to follow him for plenty of laps.

Than, it was me versus Phil once again.  2guns sorcerer He put me under sooooo much pressure. However, I was able to stay calm and defend well, until I went into the grass into turn 1. I don't think I was late on braking there, I was just too close to the outside and was not able to turn early enough to stay on the racing line. I was disappointed, as I do believe it was possible to finish in P5 as we had around 10 laps to go. It was so much fun though, he was all over my rear end for so long but I fought like a lion.  gun_bandana

I am very happy that I raced here, even though I was not sure I will make it, as I have a small but very annoying cold.

See you next time gents!

Dear me...  The whole roller start business just isn't working, is it?  Tom gaffed right off the grid but quickly realized his error and slotted back into position.  Then Bot set up an almighty shunt by not acknowledging the start point and causing the field to play bumper cars behind him.  Geeezzz...  Let's just forget the idea altogether, OK?

Picking up the pieces from that, I ran ahead of Bob for a lap til he got position on me for the kink on the back straight and I went wide to accommodate only to spin in the grass collecting Bot as I did so.  Tuff luck there, Bot.  Managed to get going again but I was well down in last place chasing Paul with little affect for the balance of the race.  Finished P13(P10 net).

Note: It would seem that Bot performed two resets.  On Lap01 and again on Lap16. Tsk, tsk...  I should think that he's looking at a P14 final placing in the finishing order if not an outright DQ, no?

I should think that a DQ in Tom's case is not warranted.  He corrected his error well in time.

I messed up this one...
I forgot there was a Shft/R allowed so left when I beached it onto a bank
Nearly left before then anyway as the car seemed undrivable.
I had spent lots of laps in qual with race fuel, but after the melee at the start
I didn't think I made any contact, but any press of the brake and the car
wanted to go in any direction except where I pointed it.

What is it about "ROLLING START" that people are not getting?

I've done loads of rolling start events in other sims, and occasionally someone
forgets and creeps back into line with their tail between their legs
But I've never seen the disasters that are we having  death

Actually in hindsight, when we had rolling starts, we used to do one lap
in formation, then the start was when the poll sitter crossed the start line
on the 2nd lap. Could get a bit tedious round The Green Hell  whistling whistling lol lol lol
But for exceptions like that we would either standing start, or make different start point
a bit like F1 does after the safety car.

Hi all...
Tuesday evening I arrived quite late (GPL RACER race just before), I went to the site to see the PW which was "rolling to T4"... and for me the T4 was just before the back straight.. ..but no!...sorry for the mess created! ...then by pushing too hard to try to come back I made a few mistakes and 2 s/r!!...which disqualifies me...not very serious as I end up in the wrong place!.. ...my mind was a little elsewhere that evening, some real life problems no doubt...
too bad I missed a good fight in front Smiley but it's only been postponed....
well done Evil and podium see you next time...
ciao tutti Wink ..... wheelchair
