SEASON 44  -  1967 F2    PROFESSIONALS         Round 5  -  Suzuka 2000

Soichiro Honda decided to develop a new permanent circuit in the late 1950s. Designed as a Honda test track in 1962 by Dutchman John "Hans" Hugenholtz, the most iconic feature of the track is its "figure eight" layout, with the 1.2 km (0.75 mi) long back straight passing over the front section by means of an overpass. It is one of only two FIA Grade 1 licensed tracks to have a "figure eight" layout, the other one being the Fiorano Circuit.

I have just tried a few laps around this version of Suzuka on UKGPL 11 to check out the chicane and any issues with "cuts" and penalties.

Despite sticking 2 wheels very definitely across the kerbs and even into the grass, nothing nasty happened to me. Just wondering if someone has turned off the checkpoints?

Checkpoints are currently not enabled on UKGPL11:

Additionally, I ran some laps earlier in my AMATEUR capacity.  I unintentionally ran over the kerb/cut the track by the smallest amount on 1 lap (fair enough)   but most of my other laps were also indicated by GPLRA as 64/offtrack,  despite appearing to have 2 wheels inside the white lines.

A very scrappy race for me. I always find the little cars very hectic to drive. I was in a decent position on about lap 3 when a car ahead of me spun and I did a pirouette in sympathy. After that I went steadily backwards, mostly my fault but I did get punted off once when the car ahead of me slowed and I had to back off which invited the car behind me to nudge my gearbox. I had a couple of good battles with Andreas and Bob towards the end but any chance of fighting for a mid-pack finish was gone.

Too many mistakes by far for me to make any sort of impression on the top places. Had a great battle with Yannick and I nearly threw it away at the final chicane. I beat Tom by 0.1s. Lots of fun in the F2 cars though. Thanks for racing.

This series is becoming VERY competitive with many very quick drivers. Plus there is not a great deal to choose between the cars ( except the Ferrari and the BT14, respect to Doni for taking that car.).

In some quick pre race testing the MS7 was about 1-1.5 secs a lap faster than my trusted Lola BMW, but the race setup that I have developed for the Lola over several races is very comfortable and works for me.

Qualifying was so close that I had to go for a low fuel run ( instead of race fuel load) to get further up the grid and then I only managed 3rd spot with a banzai lap!!

I got a great launch and passed Dimi ( very worried that it would end like Zeltweg on Sunday, but everyone held their line  sweatdrop) to be on Tris's tail at T1. Once again I was in no hurry to pass Tris and let our pace ease away from Dimi and the chasing pack. I new that Dimi would be fast and consistant, but Alain in a Matra was likely to be very quick too.

I really must learn NOT to relax too much when running behind another car. Tris and I had created a nice comfy gap and I was quite prepared to wait for a mistake from Tris before making any attempt at a pass, our cars were too evenly matched to force anything. But, relax I did and entering Degna 1 I missed my turn in by about 2 metres and sailed off into the gravel !!!  stupid stupid

I only just made it back onto track before Dimi arrived towing Pat behind him. So many fast drivers and so little room for mistakes!!  Tris escaped and was able to control the race from the front, but behind him the battle was intense between Dimi, Alain, Pat and myself, with never much time between us.
A lot of the race was a blur of frantic action between Dimi and myself. Dimi was being his usual very consistant self and I made far too many errors.
I remember that I ran wide across the chicane and surrendered 2nd place to Dimi rather than retain the position with a "dodgy" move and pulled off a pass down the main straight to take back 2nd place.  There was a half spin at the hairpin that allowed Dimi to pass, but 3rd place for me was settled when I almost took both of us off the track at T1 when DD braked harder than I expected. My fault entirely as I perhaps should have been more cautious instead of throwing my Lola into there as usual  Roll Eyes. Much twitching of the wheel and haevy braking just avoided the rear of the Matra, but sent me into that deep gravel with only a few laps to go.
Superb racing guys and grats to Tris for the win and all finishers.

PS. I did save the replay and hope to watch for transgressions later.

Post-race it only dawned me it was only my first race of this championship.

I went for the coins rhis race so drove the BT14. I feel I was strong in the corners, but the car was an absolute sitting duck! With the speed disadvantage I relegated to the midfield.

This proved tricky in the race, where I had to do the passing through cornering or lucking out of others' mistakes. I had one move on Pete down at the Esses I felt pretty proud of Smiley

In the end I'm happy with sixth. More was probably impossible.
With plenty of tokens to spend now I'm surely looking to get a clean sweep in the final few rounds Cheesy

Nothing to see here...  Move along...  Nothing to see here...

Edit: Actually, somewhat miffed to see that I scored a '64' on Lap03.  Most likely for getting a poorish entry to the Spoon rather than cutting the chicane.

Can use "GPL Replay Analyser" (GPLRA).  There is also an exported 'complete' text report included with the Ams replay in the season 44 download area from server UKGPL11.

Forgive a non-noobie too. Where does it give the "80" and "64" codes and where do we find what triggers them in terms of how many wheels over the white line?

Because, I cannot see anything in the txt. file other than 19 lap race and 19 laps completed? Against my name in the race record I do not have an "off track" designation whereas many other drivers do??

Within the replay analyser I have a record that 10/19 laps for me triggered an "off track" event, but I cannot see any further details??

I know that I outbraked myself once into the chicane and had to run across the sand and I yielded the position to Dimi who I was fighting with, but I cannot find anything to indicate that transgression?

From GPLRA info at http://gplra.martingranberg.se/

Quote
Q: What decides if a lap is marked "Off Track"?

A: GPL decides, we simply read this info from the replay file. That is, this is our interpretation of some info found in the replay file. From testing it seems that a lap is marked "Off Track" if you drive with two wheels at any time on a surface other than asphalt.

Which is maybe not exactly the same as keep 2 wheels inside the white lines to be deemed on-track.
