SEASON 44  -  1967 F2    AMATEURS         Round 6  -  Ingliston

Ingliston (pronounced Inglestone) Racing Circuit was a 1.03-mile motor racing circuit built at the Royal Highland Showground at Ingliston, Edinburgh. The circuit was created by widening and linking the network of access roads at the venue which had previously been used exclusively as an agricultural showground. The first racing took place at Ingliston on 11 April 1965 and it quickly became recognised as one of Scotland's top motorsport venues. The first race was almost 10 years before Knockhill in Fife opened in 1974.Ingliston became infamous for its tight corners and plethora of obstacles such as trees and buildings close to the track and was therefore considered to be more hazardous than other similar facilities in the UK.There were extensive spectator facilities including a 5000-person grandstand which was built around the southern part of the track and thus named 'Arena'. The venue saw many famous drivers compete at races including the late Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Stirling Moss and, more recently, David Coulthard. The circuit has been described as a place where drivers learn how not to crash.

I assume another excellent Pete Bennett build? I love the attention to detail  thumbup1
smooth realistic track, grass that behaves like grass should, kerbs to knock the car around.

Thanks. Glad you like it. As for the kerbs, hitting them only slows you down. You'll be quicker if you can cleanly avoid them, even through the esses.

Not everyone likes this track as it's very short for GPL. I love it. I find it very addictive.

Track number 4 is on the way but real life keeps getting in the way.

Yes. I watched a replay of my efforts, and one of the turns has a drop off beyond the kerb which I had not realised
I am trying very hard to stay off the kerbs, particularly in the right left right left sequence after the Start/Finish
I am getting decent times, but Will has the fastest lap on my screen that is gob smacking.... high 49!!!!!
I need to go lie down in a darkened room, and your replay in the Locust looks speeded up to me  Shocked

My best time so far, an unusually tidy lap, that proves keeping off the kerbs is a good thing  Grin

I work on occasion at our training centre in South Gyle, which is a long stone's throw from the track
If I ever get up there again, I will go look at what's left of it. They still run Drive a supercar things
there, but it's not much of the track left.

So, Blandford, Ingliston, 3rd is?

Ahhh, right, another good one  thumbup1
Only done that once in a pre season event

I remember from Power and Glory/GTL days, there was a track builder group "VLM"
They did some gorgeous looking versions of tracks. Le Mans was superb, and Roeun
looked fantastic. But I never ran theirs in P&G because they had too much eye candy
that you couldn't turn off, and there seemed to be more segments than needed

People with slower PCs (like me at the time) could count the frames, and turning off
detail had no effect, you got their full graphics anyway, so I didn't use them

When I first saw this track a month or so ago, I thought, "This is going to be a slaughterhouse." Still, the more I practiced, the more I began to like the place. I never did get a good setup, and I'm pretty sure I never figured out the optimum line around the town either, but it wasn't nearly as much of a bloodbath as I'd originally feared. I've never been on a track that ever made me feel as if I were going to be sick, but the sheer busyness of Ingliston --- how you get "Inglestone" out of that escapes me, and I'm a native speaker of English (if you believe that Americans actually speak English) --- at one point had me feeling that I needed to regroup my thoughts into a more positive direction. Happily, that uneasiness quickly passed.

I don't have many clear memories of the race, possibly because I couldn't think more than 50 yards ahead and practically no yards behind, but I do recall sequential duels with Francesco and then David for what seemed like half the race. Toward the end David began to drop back and give me some well-earned rest. I attributed that to car damage he might have sustained. I never did figure out a way to put Francesco away when I was ahead of him, and when I made an error and he got by me, I couldn't figure out how to reel him back in. Now that I think of it, that fairly well seems to describe my 25 years with GPL.  Smiley

Unlucky Matt.  From your pre-race times, I knew I'd be unable to keep up with you.
I just tried to drive safely/take few risks in case something happened ahead.

Initially, I just tried to hang onto the back of you & was relieved when you helped me break away a little from the chasing cars.

That was huge fun, and soul destroying at the same time.

I tried a few cars, I wanted to take the little Ferri at other tracks
but my fave cooper had more grunt, so I didn't. Brab14 was very good here
and I could get into the 50.xx but I was more consistent with the Ferrari
so went with him.

I just pipped Dave for pole, then managed a decent start, and stayed calm
despite Dave having a rope to my gearbox  Shocked then after 12 laps or so, as the tyres
had warmed up, I started to put in some quali laps and made a small gap
all traffic I came up on were very polite and moved over, Dave seemed to be
help up a bit, and the gap was at 7 secs towards the end. I was looking at the
fuel reading, and was trying to work out how many laps would 1 gallon do?
Lost concentration and spun  taz I probably should have just done a Sht/R
but that didn't occur to me, I was lift and coast, drove a couple of laps
in 1 gear higher, might not have stayed in front, but I would not have had
to do the last lap with the motor spluttering and Roger looming up from behind
at a good rate of knots.

Can you save fuel in this by using higher gears, and not accelerating quite as hard?
Other sims I have done do.

Hard luck Matt

Yes, you can most definitely "save" fuel by reducing revs and utilising "lift and coast". There are many (too many!!) races where at half distance a mental check on the fuel consumption has come as a shock requiring some drastic action.

There have been occasions when I have regained 2-3 laps by careful driving and it is surprising just how quickly you can circulate with good concentration.

I have always understood that fuel consumption is determined by engine revs.

Well in my experience that is absolutely true Clive, short shifting...taking some corners one gear higher and even avoiding using engine braking ( which forces the revs up) all appear to save fuel consumption.
Of course the simple answer is to make sure that you have enough fuel before joining the grid  Roll Eyes, but my single overloaded brain cell already has too much to do......

That's one thing that I do manage most of the time.  I do a short run at race speed and subtract the fuel left in from the fuel that I started with.  Divide that by the number of laps covered and then multiply it by the race distance.  I then multiply by 1.1 to add the ten percent for slipstreaming.  I usually then add 1.3 ltr, which is the fuel left in the tank when the engine starts to splutter.

That has always provided plenty of fuel.  Probably too much but then there is no way that I can indulge in mid-race mental arithmatic without stuffing the car into a hedge/tree/straw bale etc..

I once threw a way a win at Bremgarten by attempting to scratch my nose so I have to keep it simple once the race is on!
