UKGPL Season 15 - Fun race - 65 mod - East London

This is a test race for the proposed beginners division.  The current Season 16 proposal is for the 65 mod league races to alternate with the 66 mod races on Tuesday nights, should a schedule be published the race nights will not then be altered.  If you have problems installing the 65 mod, just post on the thread. If you haven't used the 65 cars before, be aware that though they're far easier to drive they have no proper default setups of their own- you'll have to download one, or alter the gearing.  There are default setups available if you need one, just use the link in the thread below.

Pre-Season Test - Season 15 Tuesday July 29 at 8:45 p.m. London UK time (BST).
Please note that this is 15mins earlier than the previous time for these events.

Please be in IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:40 p.m.
(You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so)

The 1965 season was the last to use the controversial 1500cc formula which had begun after 1960, to the initial advantage of Ferrari.  The 1965 cars are smaller than the 1967 cars and have less torque and hence more grip.  It was claimed that they 'cornered on rails', however this allowed the Grand Prix series to retain the use of circuits which were otherwise to prove extremely dangerous.

The 1965 cars are ideal for those new to GPL as they allow the tracks to be learnt in light reliable cars, however these are also full Formula One cars, and quite fast....  Jim Clark won the 1965 East London Grand Prix from pole in a Lotus.  His qualifying time was 1'27.2.

David Wright's 'Legends' site http://fp.gplegends.plus.com/ has the download of the most recent 2.0.1 version (under 'details') as well as being an exceptional guide to both 1965 and 1967, for those interested in Formula One history.

Unfortunately the current 65 mod download does not have default setups.  Default setups for all the cars and tracks that are likely to be used can be downloaded from http://www.neurology-crew.com/gplserver under '65 setups'.  Note that you will have to add enough fuel for the race, whether short or long!

Schedule and race length Season 16

My current preference is to use the original tracks without Kyalami, Monaco and the Nurburgring.  East London would be used instead of Kyalami and the other track would be Brands Hatch.  I'd add the default setups for Rouen, Mexico and Mosport to the existing ones.

The alternatives are to use more add-ons, as in my initial proposal, or a different track to Brands Hatch as the other add-on.  As this is the beginners it would seem likely that the original tracks will be the only familiar ones, however Snetterton and Albi of the addons are especially good beginners tracks and were used for F2 in 1965, as was Solitude, another popular addon.   Hockeheim and Imola of my original choices weren't used for major races until 1967 and 1970 respectively.

While the current format of two short races is suitable for fun races, int long is normal for leagues and int short may get less satisfying after a while.  Also, its important that beginners learn to start without problems and the two-race format doesn't encourage that.  The cars are not designed for 1/6 fuel cold tyre racing starts, and it is even possible that they are more stable at the start with more fuel.

Looking forward to it.

Brands gets my vote, if that counts for anything  Smiley

Your vote certainly counts Steve, one for Brands.

For anyone who needs to download East London, Jonathan Merry's  track is here: http://gpltd.bcsims.com/?dis=E   You might also want an update, either the Balue update from the SRMZ link or this Caballero update: http://gplmz.bcsims.com/index.php?showtopic=238

One of our UKGPL veterans John Roberts has also made brake markers that might be useful- the download seems to have disappeared in the RSC crash, but I'll try to obtain another link and post it.

How about if us gate crashers and other non-newbie types start from the pit lane or back of the grid?

The pit lane start should work here because all of the pit stalls are before the start line.  If that doesn't suit then we could just not quallify and join the back of the grid.

Did some practice on the server with Evil last night and we seem to be at about 1:28 most of the time.  I used a Steve Cloyd BT7 with the steering ratio changed to 12.  Hell of a lot of gear changes to fit into a short lap.

No- while it's appreciated that the faster drivers use the BT7 or Cooper, I'd prefer that they qualify and start from the appropriate grid position.

One of the more important elements to enjoying your early races is to establish consistency, and it doesn't help to have a bunch of faster drivers attempting to pass in the first laps.

If the Beginner's is to run as a league next season, I'll be looking for some faster drivers as team leaders to help the actual beginners with hints and setups- until then, you'll have to content yourself with adding colour and atmosphere....

It would be great to see you tonight Kiwi, along with all the other new faces, who all seem to be getting too fast too quickly!! Shocked.
Hope you can make it and join in the fun.

I'm working hard on being there!

Have to leave a BBQ early (prime NZ steaks!) limit my beer intake to half a dozen and travel across the whole of Vienna to be there, so I might be a little late to Qualifying...if I manage to make it...

Hope after all that my connection and driving are worth it;)  I haven't managed to get any practice on this track as I've been away in Italy so watch out!!!

Cheers guys!

Thanks Steve- apologies for the 9pm start, should have shut Bully's server down to have it ready but since it seemed that there might be latecomers I let the open race run.  Next time I'll make sure!

Spa is the plan for the next race- though it might be listed as Season 16 it'll be another two fun races- if we have a league it won't start until September.
