UKGPL Season 16 - Pre-Season race - 65 mod - Mexico City

This is a non-championship race which will be the last test race before Season 16 and the new Beginner's division.  If you have problems installing the 65 mod, just post on the thread. If you haven't used the 65 cars before, be aware that though they're far easier to drive, they have no proper default setups of their own- you'll have to download one, or alter the gearing.  There are default setups available- if you need one contact me, unless the existing zip has been updated.

Please be in IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:40 p.m.
(You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so)
IGOR and Race passwords: see above

Server 3.ukgpl
IP address  87.194.135.42

Race date = 26-08-2008
Track = Mexico City
Variant = 65mod
Damage Model = Intermediate
Qually time = 30 minutes.
Race length = Long (20 laps)

Password: see above

Chassis assignments: please take a chassis commensurate with your experience.  As this is the last race before the season starts, it would be advisable to take the same chassis that you intend to use for the season.  As I hope to run a team championship based on chassis it will also be helpful if drivers are distributed fairly evenly among the available chassis.  The chassis allocations at Spa seemed to work fairly well and all drivers are free to retain their choice from Spa for this race.

Senior drivers should use either the Cooper or the Brabham BT7.

Clubmans drivers with at least one D1 entry last season use the BRM, Honda or Brabham BT11.

Beginner drivers have a free choice of cars, but be aware that the Ferrari and Lotus are the fastest cars.  Also, though it may seem that there is little chance of remaining on terms with the senior drivers, there will be a second championship table for the beginners only, with a beginners podium!

65 Mod

The 1965 season was the last to use the controversial 1500cc formula which had begun after 1960, to the initial advantage of Ferrari.  The 1965 cars are smaller than the 1967 cars and have less torque and hence more grip.  It was claimed that they 'cornered on rails', however this allowed the Grand Prix series to retain the use of circuits which were otherwise to prove extremely dangerous.

The 1965 cars are ideal for those new to GPL as they allow the tracks to be learnt in light reliable cars, however these are also full Formula One cars, and quite fast....  Richie Ginther won the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix in a Honda.  Jim Clark took pole in his Lotus with a time of 1'56.17.

David Wright's 'Legends' site http://fp.gplegends.plus.com/ has the download of the most recent 2.0.1 version (under 'details') as well as being an exceptional guide to both 1965 and 1967, for those interested in Formula One history.

Unfortunately the current 65 mod download does not have default setups.  Default setups can be downloaded from http://www.neurology-crew.com/gplserver under '65 setups'.  Though there may not yet be a setup for Mexico, the East London default could work, perhaps with taller top gears.  Note that you will also have to add enough fuel for the race!

First action on the practice server last night with Nicky coming to terms with the Cooper and Norbert giving the Ferrari an outing.  Burt was there as well but I didn't notice what he was wearing.

It would be a good idea for everyone to download the relevant Cloyd lap to see where the correct line really is.

Most 67 races here finish with the winner having 0 on track laps.  The 65s are less of a problem on the green stuff than the 67s so I expect the same corners to be clipped.

Mexico rewards the man who keeps to the right line rather than the one who brakes late and uses big areas of tarmac in lurid slides.  It may feel quick but it ain't.

Unless Hristo pops along, to show where the other three seconds are that I can't find, then I expect that come race day Evil's Cooper and my BT7 will be in the low 53s for the front of the grid.  We may find Kruger there as well now that he has stopped loafing about. Grin

Low 1:53's huh!!??
Methinks that Loynes character was sandbagging me last night Undecided I reckon I need another second at least to hold onto his BT7  Roll Eyes

Watching in my mirrors, when I was pedalling that Cooper so fast my feet were a blur and gearchanges were happening every 50 mtrs, he was sauntering around in his usual economic fashion and holding the gap between us. Wink you ain't foolin anyone Clive Roll Eyes

For what its worth, I was using my East London setup with a lengthened top gear, so maybe there is scope for some fine tuning of the ratios and a little more speed to come. If Kruger is there...well he should be in the 1:50's??  Undecided.

I'm surprised you could see me in your mirrors, I spent most of my time looking at the side elevation of your Cooper.   Grin

I might show up tonight, one never knows Smiley

I'm going to get a haircut tonight (asked for a more aerodynamic style) so I hope that finishes in time.

I never tried 65s in Mexico (I can't remember if I did) but if Hristo's best lap is a low 51, then I'm probably looking at mid 52 laps (judging by Rob Hunter's pace).

Then again, I'll be driving a BT7 which I don't think is that good so see you in 53s probably Smiley

I just tried the Ferrari so that I can give Alastair some advice and found it a bit of a handful.

Just like the 67 version, it wanted to reverse into the corners.

I got the hang of it but looking at my best two laps the analyser says that my best effort is only going to be a 52.7.  That's only about 0.8 better than my BT7 so the faster cars are not worth as much here as at Spa.

WR times only make it 1.3 seconds between the Ferrari and the BT7.

The BT7 is actually quicker than the Cooper.  Grin  Tough luck Evil.  thumbup1

This might sound daft but you ain't who you think you are.  Grin

Make sure that you select your 65 persona when joining the race.
Make sure that iGOR is aimed at the same GPL install that you are depositing the setups in.

Can't see that it can be anything else.
