Moderator's Report

SUMMARY

A hard fought victory for Al Heller, very closely followed by the fast improving Peter Maestro. Van Tussman drove a superb race to pick up a podium and the fastest lap in his first UKGPL race, well done! RogUK pushed Al very hard and led the race for a couple of laps but a few too many incidents put paid to a podium position.

Server replay time: 0h01m03s

Lap 1 - Crowthorne Corner - Mark Minard and Bernie Darwin.

Mark gets a good start and picks up a couple of places on the run down to Crowthorne. Bernie and N Hance are several car lengths ahead as they approach the braking zone. N Hance keeps a tight inside line; Bernie is along side and keeps to the outside line wisely giving N Hance plenty of room. Mark sees the gap between Bernie and N Hance and decides to drive between them. However he leaves his braking far too late and crashes into Bernie.

Bernie was driving impeccably, he was aware of N Hance on his inside and was cognisant of the cars ahead leaving just enough room to avoid the risk of warp contact. Mark did not achieve any overlap at turn in and given the fact he ran wide into Bernie, he didn't have the ability to out brake him. The gap ahead was left deliberately by Bernie to avoid the risk of warp contact, it did not present an overtaking opportunity. Mark had Fabio Locarno in his blind spot on his inside most of the way down the straight but he didn't necessarily know that for sure, apart from a fleeting glance of Fabio's rear wheel in his mirrors at one stage. This is another reason why Mark should have stayed left rather than diving into the gap. Mark wasn't close enough to attempt a pass on Bernie, he had no overlap whatsoever at turn-in. Moreover trying to go a three abreast into Crowthorne was asking for trouble, the gap was always going to close up as Bernie and N Hance approached the apex.

If he had not made contact with Bernie, Mark would probably have made the corner but he would definitely have run wide. So it was a very ambitious overtake and rather unwise to attempt to drive three abreast into Crawthorne.

Given that his is a lap 1 incident it attracts a further one place penalty.

Billy is entitled to a no-fault Shift-R.

Server replay time: 0h01m11s

Lap 1 - Crowthorne Corner - Mark Minard and Rob Mott.

When trying to recover from his incident with Bernie, Mark makes an unforgivable mistake trying to rejoin. He is facing the wrong way but instead of waiting until the track is clear he immediately tries to do a U-turn and drives straight into Rob Mott. Carnage ensues with Paul Visser and Bookie Westbrook innocently involved in the melee.

Mark should have waited until the track was clear before trying to rejoin.

Given that his is a lap 1 incident it attracts a further one place penalty.

Server replay time: 0h01m15s

Lap 1 - Barbeque Bend - N Hance and Vos Vosblod

N Hance tries to overtake Vos on the inside at Barbeque Bend. Unfortunately he runs wide and makes side-by-side contact with Vos. Unfortunately Fabio Locarno gets tangled in the debris.

N Hance had no overlap at turn-in so this isn't a case of side-by-side contact after a legitimate over taking attempt. Rather this is an ambitious overtaking event.

Given that his is a lap 1 incident it attracts a further one place penalty.

Server replay time: 0h11m28s

Lap 8 - Crowthorne Corner - Fabio Locarno and Billy Nobrakes

Billy exits the pits after making a stop and go and gets to Crowthorne Corner before the main field is upon him. Billy stays wide to allow Fabio to pass but Fabio runs wide and contact is made.

Billy was not at fault here. He was driving at his own pace and left plenty of room. Fabio was in a battle with Bernie and so he had one eye on Billy and one eye on his mirrors. Nevertheless it is the lapping driver's responsibility not to make contact when the lapped driver has presented him with a clean passing opportunity. Having said that Fabio made a concerted effort to slow down and pass Billy on the inside, he simply failed to pull it off.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h27m04s

Lap 16 - Esses - Billy Nobrakes

Billy blows his third engine and retires. This is down to driving technique, there is nothing wrong with the car. Speed shifting (i.e. not lifting the throttle when changing up through the gears) means the engine over-revs for a split second on every up shift. THIS WILL DESTROY ANY ENGINE.

The first time this happened Billy tried to do a S&G but crashed in the pit lane and he needed a shift-R. He did a good S&G on the next lap (6) but failed to do another S&G for the Armco bashing incident at the end of lap 5. Crashing in the pit lane and needing a shift-R whilst trying to do a S&G does mean another S&G is required (a time penalty has not been awarded as it would make no difference to the result).

Billy's next engine expired gradually. His engine started smoking and missing badly at Barbeque Bend on lap 15 so he limped round the rest of the lap trying to get back to the pit lane to do a shift-R. This is not a good idea. Billy was very slow limping back to the pits and was a hazard to other drivers (although he did a good job of keeping out of the way which is to be commended). Moreover his reset in the pit lane put him back on the fastest part of the track just where drivers may be trying to overtake. What he should have done is to do a shift-R straight away, just down from Barbeque Bend where it is reasonably safe to do so, and then performed a S&G in the pit lane at the end of the lap.

Server replay time: 0h28m29s

Lap 20 - Crowthorne Corner - Al Heller and Nicky Ickx

Al looses control trying to avoid RogUK who has slowed up behind some back markers. Al spins and ends up stationary on the racing line. Nicky is a long way back and slows considerably but nevertheless is unable to avoid contact with Al's stricken BRM.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h28m59s

Lap 20 - Clubhouse Bend - RogUK and Van Tussman

Rog goes wide on the exit of Sunset but he keeps the throttle hard down and consequently gets a little squirrelly as he straddles the kerb. Consequently he careers into Van Tussman. Having his offside wheels on the tarmac and his nearside wheels on the grass coupled with an excess of horsepower is asking for trouble.

Rog should have accepted he was going to loose a place as soon as he went onto the grass. Instead he tried to fight to keep his place when he didn't have full control.

Van Tussman is entitled to a no-fault Shift-R.

Server replay time: 0h32m11s

Lap 21 - Jukskei Sweep - Vlad Vosblod and Graham Poole

RogUk and Fabio Locarno are locked in combat round Barbeque Bend when Rog looses it and Fabio has to take to the grass. Vlad is following close behind and pounces on the opportunity to get past Fabio who has regained the racing line but with much reduced momentum. The excitement ahead has taken all Vosblod's attention and he doesn't know Graham is also trying to take advantage of the situation and is now alongside Vosblod's Lotus. As Vosblod moves over contact is made.

Graham was quite a way back when this all started but he wasn't visible in Vosblod's mirrors for more than a fraction of a second so there was little opportunity for Vosblod to ascertain where Graham actually was. Although it is strictly Vosblod's responsibility not to move over the unusual lines and the opportunist move by Graham mean a penalty in this case would be harsh.

Graham is entitled to a no-fault Shift-R.

Huh track version with pitwall , or without ?
With Pit Wall Please.  If you have used the GPL Installer there will be no pit wall so follow the instructions in the first post in this thread to reinstate it.

Disaster Sad Made a couple of places off the grid & tangled with someone on turn 2. Waited till everyone had passed then pressed escape??? or something but NOT shift R. Obviously I am so unused to first lap pile ups that I forgot what to do. Roll Eyes Apologies if I caused the crash & well done to the top 3.

Thanks J Roberts for the file thread I will try & download the race & see what happened. Hope the new drivers will be back for more.

Passed Nicky off the start as he bogged the Cooper down . Then p5 going into T1  became p9 goin out of it thanks to me being tagged  Angry  (thought for a mo it was around of the BTCC )

Spent the rest of the race playing catch up , I was helped on my way by Vosb who outbraked himself trying a move into crowthorn, then the 2 Ferraris ahead who kindly moved over to let me through  Wink by this time though the leaders had dissapeared over the horizon into the far away distance and my lonely ride to try and catch them up was a no go-er without some tow assisted laps.

Grats to the podium boys see you all in 2 weeks

So you didn't get on Karliss?

let me apologise but people in iGOR tend not to give out the password as other people in the chatroom can see and jump on the wrong server.

You mayh find it easier in future to find the race thread through the home page at ukgpl.com, click the Season 18 link on the left and then the Novices Trophy (65) link. That will show you the championship table and race calendar. Click on the flags at the top to see the race thread for that race as long as it has been created.

You're not the only person to call the forum unorganised but people here are generally helpful and I hope you get to race next time.

THANK U VERY MUCH GOOD PEOPLE who in IGOR instead of telling me pasword for race ,
sent me to this  unorganized forum , to spent my 30 min searching for KYALAMI topic,

Sorry about that Karliss but it was very busy in chat and people don't necessarily know who is who especially when people use different names for SRou, Driving, IGOR chat and VROC chat.  The passwords are published 24 hours in advance so there is no need to wait until the start of the race to try to find out what it is.

The best way to find the race threads is go to the UKGPL Homepage.  There are several ways to get straight to the race thread from there:

1.  Links to the next races are in the box on the top right entitled "Forthcoming Events".  You can click on any them to get to the race thread.

2.  On the left hand side you will see a box entitled "Seasons".  Click on Season 18 and it will take you to the UKGPL Season 18 Championship page (have a read while you are there Wink).  On the left there is a box entitled "Series" and under that a link to all the championships.  Clicking on the Novices Trophy will take you to the Novices Trophy Championship table (again have a read).  At the top of each column in the table you will see a flag.  Simply click on the flag to take you to the race thread.

3.  The latest race announcements are also displayed at the bottom of the homepage.  But this generally shows the races in the future not the current one which is what you need for the password.

All the championship tables are organized in the same way so when you know this I think you will agree that the web site is quite well organized.  I appreciate that logging into the SRou forums rather than navigating via the homepage can be confusing.  The forums are very busy and it isn't always easy to find what you want.  Searching for Kyalami would send you on a wild goose chase, sorry about that Sad

Firstly congrats to team-mate Al H, Peter and new driver Van.

Well it wasn't my best race but it was a lot of fun. I managed to snatch victory (well 6th) from the jaws of defeat.
Quallied 7th - PB might have got me up a tad but not unhappy with that. Good start, could see Bernie's Honda getting held up on my left.
After that disaster struck and I was knocked off track - not seen the replay yet so no comment there.
Managed to rejoin, without a Sh/R, in around 9th. After that the race was a sea of Fezza's. Spent a lorra lorra laps trying to pass Norbert. Everytime I closed on the straight could not get enough steam to take him at Crowthorne. Eventually found myself getting too close and had to take evasive action to avoid taking him out resulting in a solo spin.
After a recovery and catch-up I finally got through at BBQ and then found myself behind Fabio's red devil. Same scenario and Fabio was a tough one, managed to hang on to his coat tails for quite a few laps. Around lap 22 the track ahead looked very strange - lots of cars dicing each other. Anyway spin ahead which Fabio and I avoided and got through, I did get a rear end knock but no damage.
Settled for where I was when Fabio span - must have taken some damage or something I guess. That was it - head home for a 6th, Bernie was miles up the road so no chance there.

I guess I finished one up on my qually and there was loads of close racing so it was a good one... Better start looking at Oulton now.

PS: I'm probably used to going into the forum so find it straight-forward but can only agree with Phil and Mike, go in via www.ukgpl.com and all the current races are in the top right. We do share the general forum with the GTR/GTL etc guys which makes for lots of non-GPL threads, but without the goodwill of Giz and his team we wouldn't have one of the best race systems there is  Wink

Sorry you had problems joining , Hope you enjoy the future races with us here as were all a friendly bunch (most times anyway)

I too often forget the PW but then I ask in igor and get it sent via private chat.

Don't worry , you will find the first 5 years are the worst  Wink

BTW

Smarter is OK but not too sure about the "AND FASTER"  bit  Smiley

Think I used up my last "Get Out Of Jail Free" Card there.. after holding the lead for 17 laps I suddenly found myself relegated to 5th but then by a stroke of luck found myself miraculously back in the lead 3 corners later sorcerer whistling

Spent most of quallie behind Fabio who provided a nifty tow (hope you didn't mind me stalking you Fabio ninja) & managed to match my PB in quallie to just pip Peter Maestro to the pole. Didn't fluff the start (for once) & held the lead into T1 ahead of my fast-starting teammate RogUK & speedy debutant Van Tussman. Had to drive out of my skin just to stay ahead - Rapid Rog was much quicker into Clubhouse Bend & dived inside a few times though as always played it hard but fair & didn't try anything too risky.

17 "qually" laps later, neither of us had made any mistakes & were still locked together, but then I had to lift off at the kink on the main straight to avoid Billy NoBrakes (not blaming you Bill - you were slowing to get into the pits & there's only one line through there at speed) - having lost momentum, Rog outdragged me easily down the straight to take the lead. It looked like it was going to be tricky to get 1st place back & even worse I was now under increasing pressure from Van Tussman behind. Then on lap 20, I was following Rog into T1 when he had to slow unexpectedly for a backmarker which forced me to slam on my brakes to avoid crashing into the back of him. Apologies to Nicky who got caught up in my resulting spin - though luckily he didn't lose a place & neither of us got any damage. I rejoined in 5th feeling a bit gutted but then rounded Sunset Bend to find a 1965 f1 car scrapyard  eek. Trundled gently through the carnage & was completely gobsmacked to see Prib reporting that I was back in first place Smiley

Congratulations to Peter Maestro for 2nd & Van Tussman for an impressive 3rd on his debut. Commiserations to Rog who spent 20 laps in 1st or 2nd places. Oh & welcome to the newcomers - glad to see so many people joining up (even if they can't all get on the server - whoops Embarrassed)

Particularly bad performance on my part. I adjusted my set up just prior to qualifying & whilst this helped the car into the corners it was incompatible with the gear changes I'd got used to.
Consequently I managed to blow up 2 engines & blow a valve or a piston. Had several journeys back to the pits for S&G's - tried to keep off the racing line as much as possible but apologies to anyone I obstructed (Al).
Called it a day when the engine blew for the third time.

This is more a guidance note to the mods who will cringe at my inability to stop in my pit box. I did take my S&G's - just in the wrong places. Quick word of advice - it is worth practicing a pit lane entry at every track - I missed it on first attempt!

On the positive front - the standard of driving in the Nov's seems to be improving and good to see some new entrants on the grid. Well done Al on his win & particularly to my team-mate Peter for scoring Black Night Racings first podium finish.

It was fun racing online. This was my first REAL race online, (I drowe the Targa fun race October 2), and I guess the result had something to do with the fun factor.

To beginn with I was p3 in practice to my big surprise. But at the start I, too late, remembered that my first gear was vay to  high so I did a bad start. But at the end of the first lap I found myself in p3 and the next 18 laps was fine and I begun to settle for p3.

Then all things happend, the backmarkers begun to play a part and everyone begun to spin or something. I found myself upside down at the side of the track, after being hit in all the mess, but got on the way again with the help of shift-r and when I passed the start and finish line I found nyself still in p3 Ok, when I watched the replay I saw that IF....... I could have ended up winning but now I am really glad with my p3.

But there is one thing that bothers me. What does it mend that the result is unofficial because "Replay might have been saved before end of race"?
