Hey guys,

how about we post onboard videos of full or partial laps of old classic tracks like the ones in GPL, especially tracks that aren't used anymore.

I'll start with a full onboard lap of Spa video that I came across today:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COpOuZEEDys&feature=grec

It appears the track in GPL is quote off in terms of layout.  Undecided

It's a bit fragmented, but here's how to do it properly! Wink

Hristo I dont think that the Spa shown is the original track as raced in 67 , though some parts of it are unchanged a number of the corners were re profiled to suit modern traffic congestion (Spa was public roads )

Steve , Thats a great vid of Mike the Bike , strange to here him talk about the F1 cars moving around and sliding , I met him yeears ago In fact he bought me a pie and a pint in the bar at Oulton Park , he was having trouble getting good lap times cos he wasnt used to sliding the bike ( you didnt want the bike to slide in those days) all his senses were telling him not to slide the car , which was essential for a good lap time .

What a great bloke he was , very friendly ,no airs or graces , not a bit like some the stuck up f1 boys he was racing with at the time .

Yes, possibly THE Greatest motorcycle racer of all time. I've seen that clip of him talking about the horrible sliding cars that won't go in a straight line. Sounds like GPL doesn't it?

That's brilliant. So even back then the F1 car mob were stuck up posers compared to us down to earth biker types!! Wink

Interesting that he fancied his chances falling off his bike rather than crashing his car.

Probably true, except for the nutters at the IoM.  Tongue

Also you have to remember that one of the greatest risks from a car crash in those days was burning alive! In fact Mike received the George Medal for pulling Clay Regazzoni from his burning car in the 1973 South African GP. Ironic that he should die in a car while on a run to get fish and chips when he hit a truck performing and illegal u-turn on a dual carriageway. The driver was fined £100, it's enough to make you spit!!!

I remember the day that happened! My Dad was gutted.  I only came to appreciate how good Mike Hailwood was years after.

I hadn't noticed the lack of gloves. For the onboard stuff I'd think it was all done a fairly sedate speed, considering the size of the camera that would have been used in those days, so maybe he didn't think gloves were necessary. However, the clip of the start of the real race appears to show that he isn't wearing gloves then either!!!!!

And I thought "let's have a post where everyone can post nice classic onboard videos so we build up a onboard video thread". Nice discussion, guys, and I really enjoyed it (never knew what a legend Mike Hailwood is, read some stuff about him after this), but you went way off topic.  Roll Eyes

Oh come on H, we're just talking about a video that's been posted.  I'm sure there's more videos to come.  There's little point in it being a forum if we don't talk, and to start another thread to talk about a thread that exists already is a bit daft.

So you have been educated Hristo, a side benefit of you starting this thread! Wink
