Moderator's Report

The first 66 race in the Spec Challenge proved to be a something of a firey encounter.

Server replay time: 0h01m17s

Jethro runs into the back of King Hiro. On the first lap at Zandvoort there will always be a concertina effect going through the twisty section after T1 & drivers should take due care.
Blantant rear end shunt - 2 places + additional place for Lap 1 incident.

Server replay time: 0h13m11s

Maddog looks to slow down to slot in behind Al Hellar but his overbraking causes the car to spin & whilst there is no direct contact the warp takes out Al.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h20m28s

Jethro is lapping Billy but hits the rear end of Billy's car in the exit to last turn (as per server replay). Whilst faster cars should not be unecessarily held up there is a time & place for safe overtaking.
Rear end shut - 1 penalty place.

Server replay time: 0h22m08s

Nigel is recovering from desparately trying to avoid an overturned car. His car settles facing across the track with cars bearing down on him. His attempt to move clear impedes Al Hellar. Under the circumstances it is usually best to remain stationary until the track is clear. Pressing f10 gives a better view to assist recovering drivers.

Season 19 Spec Race Challenge - Round 6 - Zandvoort

“It's just a jump to the left
And then a step to the right
With your hands on your hips
You bring your knees in tight
But it's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane,
Let's do the Time Warp again!”
OK – maybe a bit Over The Top on the introduction but the Spec Series “timewarps” from 1965 to  the 1966 mod. (Interestingly, I can draw a number of parallels from the Rocky Horror show and my driving style – but enough of this  frivlolity!)
1966 ~ England won the world cup ~ cinematic release of “The Good, the Bad & The Ugly” & after a flirtation wityh 2.0 litre Formula One upgraded to ridiculously powered 3.0 litre cars ~ so there is absolutely no reason not  to be on the grid this Sunday.

The track is Zandvoort. We will run two races on the same track. Two chassis are available, you must use one in each race. Use the same car twice earns you a disqualification in the second race.
Your choice of chariot for this occasion is the 1966 Mod ~ Eagle T1G & the McLaren M2B (3.0 litre cars).

The Spec Series is a full championship with standard points scoring. In addition the moderator will also tally up every drivers fastest race lap & compare the chassis head to head. For your time to count in the “Spec Challenge” you must complete more than 50% distance in both races. Resets are allowed so don’t retire because of a bad start.
Also the Spec Series in the only GPL championship to be decided exclusively by driver skill, no handicapping applies.

Unlimited Shift-R is allowed in the race. No-fault Shift-Rs will not attract a Stop & Go penalty.  All other Shift-Rs must be followed by a Stop & Go.

Please be in IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:50 pm UK Time = GMT).

Due to the number of races moderating will be light touch - reported incidents only, however the moderators reserve the right to review any incident with a particular emphasis on lap one. The aim is to review the race the following weekend so incident reports should be submitted within five days of the race (i.e. the following Friday).

The Championship is split into two sub-divisions, the Light Brigade & the Heavy Brigade. The driver allocation is set out below.

NOTE: In the event of more then 19 entrants a second grid for the Light Brigade will be run by Nicky. Please ensure you join the correct server, due to the way we import if you start the race on the wrong server your result will not count. If you can try to make sure you are in the chatroom by 8.50pm this will enable a decision without any delays to the start time.

Nothing's wrong with the records, but the GT Legends lap records are for the newer short course.

Ah, I must've missed the GPL records above the GTL ones.

Should be an interesting one this - although Hristo will be hard to match here even in the McLaren!  Grin

Looking forward to it here  Cool

A couple of bad races for me.  Had a few enjoyable battles at the back but made too many mistakes to put in a good race time.  Grats to Steve for another 2 good races, looks like you've got a stranglehold on the Heavies championship.  Great showing by Bernie in race 2 Wink

66 mod is not a strong one for me so very surprised to get the double.  Martin was nearly away with it in Race 2 but had an incident up ahead which gifted me an easy position, and Ross also seemed to have some good speed but fell off somewhere too.  Shame guys, hard luck to both of you.

Phil - Sorry for the confusion in Race 2, I slowed to let you get back to the battle up ahead, you seemed to be a touch quicker than me on that lap and I had bags of room to spare due to many incidents behind me with the other heavies.  Probably ended up slowing you unnecessarily.

Had good fun.Enjoyed battle with Tim until I screwed up with less than one lap to go in race 1 and dropped from 3 rd to 6 th..or was it 7 th.can t believe why I had to cut in so early there awww.
race 2 I had to panicbrake for some traffic ahead and got nudged from behind. would have been pleased about working my way up to 4 th if it wasn t for me (although some kind of warp was included) hitting Al and messing his race  . I also went wide and hit Phil while lapping him..sorry for that too.
I had loads of adrenalin this time..maybe because I ve been away a while.

First time using this mod, and after a few laps was surprised to find myself enjoying it and getting a bit quicker, despite a few spins. Both races were carnage though, a mix of blown engines, spins and collisions (some my fault, some not). Still great fun though, as these things need a bit more sliding than the 65s and Zandvoort is a great track for that. Thanks to chief engineer Billy Nobrakes for supplying me with a nice driveable setup.

As an aside, I might have been better prepared for this but all my practice time has been devoted to the Mosport novices race tomorrow. I would like to do more spec races but it's hard to get ready for two events that are within 48 hours of each other. What do people think of pushing the Spec races back a week next season, so that the Historics are two days after the Spec races, and Novs/Ams are five days before?

Ross
Ross,

this is AFAIK the only event running in 66s this season.

As for the racing, I really enjoyed that. Took the Eagle for race 1, qualified behind a queue of Mclarens and a leading Eagle of Hristo. Made a reasonable start, screwed up a couple of times, but had a good race with people.

Race 2 I surprised myself with 2nd on the grid, at which point evilclive said "no more setup lending". Wasn't using yours evil, H might think differently though! Cheesy

Got the worst start as I took the clutch-and-bury-throttle option instead of the neutral-to-first option and paid the price. Through we went and T3 approached. The pack seemed to check up quite badly as I found KH looming very closely. Many apologies for hitting you sir, it wasn't intentional and to be fair I should have been paying more attention to the road ahead.

Had another good race punctuated by a few mistakes, particularly on lap 1. The cold tyres and full fuel didn't help. Also, lapping Phil I think I may have nerfed him off the road skirting around his slow-moving car, so apologies for that.

Good racing though, really liked these cars, particularly the responsive McLaren.

this is AFAIK the only event running in 66s this season.

I think you're right, although 67 and 69 are being used, and I've not got any experience on any of the remaining four circuits either. That's fine, as it's good to have a variety of cars and tracks to keep everyone interested.

My point was that, as a newbie, trying to prepare for spec and novices races which are two days apart is tricky, in that more often that not it's a track I don't know and (in the case of last night) sometimes a car I don't know. If the spec races were pushed back a week I'd be able to practice for one series one week, one the other.

All of that said, I suspect might be in a minority of one on this - most of you guys have driven all the tracks and cars, and got good setups, so it's usually just a case of getting a half hour "refresher" in and you're ready to go. In a few months' time I will be a bit like that (I hope).

All in all, good fun last night though.

What do people think of pushing the Spec races back a week next season, so that the Historics are two days after the Spec races, and Novs/Ams are five days before?
The downside is it could create the same thing for those doing the Graduates. If enough people have an issue next season, personally, I don't have a problem changing fixtures although my vote would be keep as is.

Anyway was fun to get the chance to try the 66's as not much previous expereince. First race was not good but I improved by the second and didn't qually last. Race 2 was fun until I got out of kilter 4/5 laps towards the end, after that couldn't pull it together.
I like the idea of the mix and match in the Specs, maybe one 65 then one other mod etc etc

An unusually high pair of finishes for me in the 66 mod - Watching the replay I've decided my main loss of time is in my tendancy to Man Foot it out of tight corners, I was far more sideways last night than even Evil normally is! Grin

Race 1 was excellent fun as I spent half of it locked in battle with KingHiro, it should have been the entire race by my reconing but I locked up the front tyres trying to outbrake him into Tarzan on lap 3 (fronts wern't upto temp yet Embarrassed ) and knocked him into the greenery - As said after the race; sorry about that. Having now watched the replay I was miles further over when I hit than I thought so you're well within your rights if you decide to report me  ninja
Was a fine battle to the end though with Hiro passing me into Tarzan with 3 to go, me making a mistake at 2 to go, forcing me to perform a Banzai penultimate lap to close up for a final chance at the podium - I thought all was lost when I clipped the first apex in Hondenvlak on the final lap and had to catch the car in a huge speed-killing slide, unfortunatly for Hiro he clobbered the 2nd apex properly and span into the Dunes gifting me 3rd back at the last minute!

Race 2 was pretty tense for the first few corners until Jethro clobbered (Hiro?) behind me into T3 which opened up a nice gap behind me - I promptly ran wide onto the grass at Pulleveld and lost lots of time. I rejoined with barely enough space to hold Bartosz off before Tarzan, luckily he seemed to take a few bad lines through the next few corners allowing me to break the tow before the next lap.
From there it was abit lonely barring the odd backmarker until I caught Evil and Hristo who'd both spun avoiding a backmarker with only a few laps to go - sadly I was still too far back to make proper use of the Slipstream to catch them but had good fun trying!  Grin

Cracking races, big thanks to the backmarkers all of whom were spot on for me  angel

While I found the Eagle faster I have to say I really enjoyed the McLaren, shame it's so underpowered Sad

Great fun ...well almost fun!! Undecided...chasing Hristo for 2 whole races, although I did get in front at least twice. The question is....am I getting faster, or is Hristo getting slower?Huh Shocked

I think that was my first ever race in the McLaren, but once I got to grips with it, there seemed little to choose between that and the Eagle as far as my meagre talent could show.

Grats to Hristo and to all the other drivers. Especially the backmarker who caught both of us unawares  Shocked Shocked  and almost allowed that ex-waza ( boooo! hssssss! ) to steal our victory towards the end of the race. It certainly did add a bit of tension as far as I was concerned!!!!
Thanks again to Billy, this series does seem to produce some close racing and great fun. It's funny, because I know that this is a "real" championship with points to be won and lost, but somehow I still treat it as " fun" races and approach them with a relaxed frame of mind.
Perhaps it is just my brain cell refusing to process any more league tables???

Fair point Tim, although I figured the Grads would be better able to deal with it as they would have more experience than the Novices.
