Moderator's Report

A win for Evil in this one still doesn't put him at the top but won't do any harm in his quest for the Championship. Tom still leads over Hristo.

Moderator's Report

Bernie's second win of the season leaves him top of the championship with Ronnie and Fabio following on. Someone forgot the stop in Stop and Go plus one incident (see below).

Server replay time: 0h05m18s

Billy takes a pit in following a reset at 03m29s. However he does not actually completely stop.
The Rules have this;

Incorrect Pit Stop
If a driver makes a pit stop (either mandatory or a S&G due to a Shift-R) but fails to bring the car to rest in the stalls. The moderator may decide an unfair advantage has been gained and consequently a time penalty may be applied equal to 3 times the number of seconds gained. Where the number of seconds gained cannot be determined with any confidence, the moderator may decide to impose a standard 5 second penalty.

Accordingly a 5 second time penalty will apply. If this was habitual or did not appear to be an oversight consideration could have been given to treating it as failing to comply with the Graduates Shift/R rules with a resultant Disqualification.

Server replay time: 0h43m21s

MH is running slightly behind and to the right of HH as they run down towards Horseshoe, he can be clearly seen in HH's mirrors. MH is beginning an attempt to pass on the inside as they approach the corner which could be considered a somewhat risque manouver, but not illegal. HH takes an unusual line, compared to previous laps, and begins to turn in right much sooner then normal. This effectively shuts off the window which MH appears committed to.
On the face of it this incident constitutes a rear end shunt by MH and there was no overlap. However Hannah turns in far earlier then normal knowing Martin is closing on the right behind him. This looks like, a conscious or not, attempt to close the gap through which Martin is attempting to squeeze.
The Rules have this;

Blatant Blocking/Weaving: Penalty 2 Places
The blocking driver changed his line in RESPONSE to the following car's movement and after the following car was committed to his line. Contact is made

However in recognition of the fact that the attempted manouver was somewhat ambitious and Hannah did not make a sudden move to the right, more a covering manouver, this penalty will be reduced by 1 place.

Huge amounts of chances for me to embarrass myself on this one. It is quite a fun circuit though - I I can get down to 2:05 I'll be happy. Going about 2:09 at the mo but if I push it I find myself exploring Virginia - particularly at the first bend and the bend at the end of the back straight - if I take it easy I lose loads of time <sigh>. Still not having too many problems with tyre temps Cheesy

In all seriousness though, if you cut a corner and gain an advantage in terms of time (overtaking people is not really on my agenda) is that penalised?

Thanks Hristo, good to see if not only me who has problems at some parts of the course Smiley . Still, gotta figure out where you get those extra 2 seconds from though...

BUT... How do you put up with that Papy engine sound? I'd suggest to visit the GPLEA site ASAP and increase your GPL experience ten-fold!

Tom.

I'm used to the default engine sounds for 67s, so it's rather bad when I don't have that. I actually do have the GPLEA sounds but have reverted to the original for some of the cars, such as the Honda and Ferrari (I think). There are some particular bad properties that some GPLEA sounds have and that's obscuring the tire skid sound too much, being too loud, having either a too low or too high pitch, not looping smoothly or looping some irritating pattern that is really distracting.

The defaults are simple, loop smoothly, mix well with the tire skid sound and have a pleasant pitch. I have very sensitive ears and all that affects my driving by a lot.

@bernie the lap time is in the video description.   Grin

UPDATE: Here's my guide of the track and a ZIP file with the replay and car setup:

GPL Virginia International Raceway Track Guide, Car Setup and Replay

It took me a while to adapt to different sounds too when I first tried them after I started driving GPL again, back in 2006. I was having troubles judging the revs in the Brabham BT24 which I used to drive regularly. But it did sound like a V8 rather than some Atari- or SNES-like noise, which I liked as it added to the experience of 'being there'. So I decided to stick with it anyway as I enjoy GPL much more when using them, even if it meant I could be slower. It made for even more satisfaction when I topped the charts regardless Smiley .

This is really one of the more tricky tracks I've ever driven. I have no idea where H pulls those 2 secs, I seem to be stuck at 1:49.86. But then again I'm no quali man so hoping to be more competitive in the race. This sure is no Tilkedrome though...

Tom.

I love the fact that Tom is stuck at 1:49:86 - I measure my laps in seconds or tens of seconds. It really shows the difference. I know that people say practice practice practice but I feel like I am just ingraining bad habits - I miss an apex run wide, hit the grass and spin. Cure is hit the apex properly but what I end up doing is going in more cautiously and staying on the black by being slower - car is not on the limit so does not rotate so I have to wait to get the power on.

I need a two man mod so that somebody can give me driving lessons Sad

At least I am enjoying it.

Don't worry Paul, I managed to get half an hour practice at VIR after our chat last night, and I'm stuck at 2:03. So at least I should have some company. Formation Waza-ing?

Good point and, having gone through the rules, I can't find anything specifically addressing this. This might be because the GPL checkpoints would pick it up and you would be black-flagged. The reason we disable them for online racing is there is a nasty habit of drivers being unfairly black flagged due to warp/server predictions etc.

Clearly the odd mistake is just that but if someone deliberately tried to gain an advantage by corner cutting I would say it was the equivalent of Railriding (rules here) ie 'a driver uses track side objects, typically armco barriers to control the car. Clearly a driver is not using his skill to control the car and will not be allowed to gain an unfair advantage as a result of his actions.'. It being the same thing, ie trying to gain an unfair advantage from the track, I would use that rule and replace 'railriding' with 'corner cutting'. I don't think it's ever been an issue at UKGPL?

I seem to be spending a lot of time on the green stuff but I don't think I am gaining any time Smiley

The question occurred because I kept needing to recover over the grass and after spinning the only straight line cuts off several tough corners - not intentional but unavoidable perhaps. If I felt I had gained such an advantage would a Stop and Go mitigate any penalty?

BTW I am going to try and host that BREASTS race tonight at 9pm

Well it's a fine line but I think the word 'deliberate' should cover it. If you're recovering from a spin I don't think the cutting of the corner would make up for it and it would clearly be better then rejoining onto the line mid-corner Wink
If it was looking like you were doing it in a calculated manner (a calculated spin? LOL) that would be a different case. Common sense must apply but I wouldn't propose introducing a specific Stop and Go requirement.

The easier way (note I said easier not easy )

Check lap times using GPLRA , anyone lapping less than 1m59s gets banned  Smiley

I think the only issue with cutting is if you gain time or position on your direct competitors. I also don't really think you can really gain an advantage by cutting at this track, it's rather dangerous to do when you're on the limit and it would compromise your acceleration. I'm finding it easier and more beneficial to stick to the tarmac and only cut with 2 wheels at some spots (which is perfectly legal) as explained in my track guide blog post.

Is that from general motor racing rules as I don't think UKGPL have anything specifically addressing it?

Yes and from past online races in this and other leagues.

The last race (Mexico) seemed to be an abscence of blue flags so the backmarkers wouldn't know if being lapped , at least I never saw any waved  Tongue

Hope this feature will be included for the forthcoming race or it "could " cause some friction  Roll Eyes
