Moderator's Report

There were no reported incidents in this race and after watching the race through in fast forward I do not think anyone performed a Shift-R!!
At this rate we moderators will be made redundant!!

However,we did note there were a few unreported incidents where competitors felt compelled to exchange paint samples, even if the intended recipient was not looking their way.

I think Geoff should be congratulated on an excellent rejoin on lap 24. It is worth looking at this because, he managed to park himself in just about the only blind spot of the whole Kyalami track, but he waits rather than dive straight back into the fray and times his escape across the tarmac onto the run off on the outside before slipping back in to the race. No medals, No points but a hint of a grin from the mods.:o)

Goodness that was hard work! Until about lap 30, I was driving a pretty good race. I was hanging on for dear life with Clive and H, who were having a terrific battle up front. I made a slight error a few laps in and lost about 5 seconds to the leading pair. I took me about half the race to close the gap, but as the fuel loads began to lighten, Clive and H began to match my pace, making overtaking very difficult indeed.

I noticed the Lola was a little down on power on the straight, but that could also be a result of my short shifting throughout the race. Eventually H had an off moment; Clive zipped through and I only just managed to gain a position, with me and H side by side for a few corners. That promoted me to second, but I couldn't really catch Clive. I could only match his pace. With about 10 to go, I had a poor exit out of Leeukop bend and H pounced, out braking me into Crowthorne corner. Maybe I was feeling fatigued after that or H and Clive sped up as I noticed I was losing ground to them up ahead. A spin with 5 laps to go cemented my 3rd place. I drove rather dishearteningly after that, with another spin to finish on the last step of the podium. Seems I have a taste for 3rd places of late. Congrats to Clive and H for the terrific drives up front.

I didn’t do too well last night at Kyalami, I just couldn’t get into the groove. I really should have been quicker.

Qualifying was a bust for me, I tried a flying lap but I was all over the place, I pretty much abandoned qualifying straight away and tried to get a car that I could drive for 34 laps. I was having problems braking for turn 1, and also the rear end snapping on me. I never really did solve these problems, it was much worse on the game server, off line the car was much better, I noticed that my fps was dropping a bit on the server, so it must have been that. I think it’s time to upgrade my graphics card.

I started slowly, and tried to keep the car on the road. I was surprised to see I could keep up with Paul Badblood. After a few laps I decided to see if I could catch him, I was happy to get a good drive off the last corner and my Mirage was much faster on the straight so I got past fine. Geoff was only a little ahead at this point, so I decided to see if I could catch him. I could, but only if I tried really hard, and of course that meant I spun the car.

After a few more spins, I was dead last. Prib said I was over 1.5KM behind Paul at this point and not going very fast. With about 20 laps to go I just tried to keep the car on the road and finish. I tried to stay out of the way of people lapping me. Sorry to my Blue teammate Sam as you surprised me when you lapped me, I jumped out of the way when I saw you so I hope I didn’t cost you any time.

For some reason Paul started to fall back towards me. I still didn’t hold out much hope to pass him as he could still lap faster than me. I think he must have had some problems as suddenly I was right behind him. He couldn’t really defend on the straight so I got past him again. With only 3 laps to go I knew I could stay ahead if I got a good drive off the last corner. So I was careful around the track and just kept my place too the line. It was a nice surprise to find myself with another driver, and I did enjoy racing with you again Paul.

Overall I’m disappointed with my pace. I should off been able to run faster, and with be more consentience. I’m happy to get a few points for the team, but I do hope to be closer to the midfield next time.

Problem is, Al, is that the midfield is gettign quicker as people such as Geoff and myself get better used to the GT cars.....  It would be nice to see some stats but back me up but I feel that in our early GT races the field was much more spread out than it has been in these last few...

That was a very tough race! I thought I could challenge Evil for pole until he probably went low on fuel in the last minutes of the session and improved by nearly half a second, but at least I just managed to pip Sam for 2nd on the grid.

I dropped a bit of time at the start as I didn't expect Evil to accelerate before the last corner  Grin , but then managed to close up a bit with the aid of slipstream. The gap stabilized at about 1 second for maybe 2 laps, then Evil decided to lift up and let me through for his own reasons. Once ahead, it was clear that I was at least half a second slower, but Evil refused to pass me and was just lifting up a couple of times per lap to stay behind. At the same time he was really close in corners and sometimes I even thought he might hit me on corner entry as he (typically) braked later. I must say I was not happy about all that, because it allowed Sam to catch up and if Evil was leading instead, we would've managed to pull away with his speed and myself benefiting from the slipstream.

Anyway, I tried to go as fast as possible, but the Mirage was a bit of a handful on more fuel and I couldn't really carry a lot of speed through corners. There were some issues with backmarkers - one choose to slow down right on the ideal line on the top of the s/f straight, another kept going off the line but not lifting up much, so with Evil glued on my back, it was a close call.

I noticed Sam closing up as we entered the final 1/3rd of the race, and with double pressure from both Evil (who had finally decided to speed up at this point as he had to defend himself) and Sam, I had to take bigger risks. Braking for T1 was always a problem and unless I kept modulating the braking pedal, the car wouldn't stop efficiently. Eventually I failed to do it properly and went wide into the grass there at T1, but didn't lose too much time, just dropped to 3rd.

I thought I had nothing to lose at this point, so I started experimenting with handling the car, and found a way to throw it into corners sideways and then balance on the throttle to exit the corner in a drift, and surprisingly it could carry a lot of speed that way and be consistent, as long as I didn't make a mistake. This little change in driving style gave me some additional pace and with the help of slipstream from Sam's car, I managed to close up within 3 laps and make a move on him going into T1.

Evil was a different story though, as he was some 2 seconds up ahead and I needed more laps to close in and I wasn't even sure he doesn't have more speed in reserve. Maybe he didn't, because I kept reducing the gap at a consistent pace and was soon benefiting from the slipstream of his 2F. There were 3 or 4 laps to go at this moment, so I started attacking as soon as I got close, but Evil was defending well by taking different lines, even though I'm not quite happy with how that went on in certain moments. One particular such moment he decided to move to the middle of the road and I was caught up by it and dropped a full second or something, which decided the outcome of the race. I managed to close up again in the last 2 laps, but it wasn't enough.

Top result for the team though and grats to Evil for having such a great pace, but I think he could've won without all those games early on and in the final few laps, his 2F was just fast enough on the straight to make a move whenever he wanted to. Grats to Sam for adding to the excitement as well.

Looks like I missed a good 'un here.
Apologies to my teamies, Tim and Dave, I've been away for a few days at weekends and this weekend not only was I back late, I came back to a PC that won't boot Sad
So, that looks like my season has come to an end unless the Pc  fairy arrives unexpectedly.
 Good luck to you all.

Well that was an embarrassing performance from me.  Hadn't had much time for practice and have just got a new G27 wheel, so using FF for first time ever a couple of days before race.  Having said that I don't actually feel either is a legitimate excuse to drive like that, the only saving grace being I kept out of harms way!  Started off steadily enough and was holding 11th position comfortably until the unstressed engine blew.  After resetting and pitting it went from bad to worse as I seemed to forget how to drive!  Had some ridiculous offs, and started being lapped after one of these so stayed off track as the first wave came through.  Managed to pull myself together a bit towards the end, and lap in the 24's to knock one and half seconds off qually time and eventually take a position back off of Badblood, which provided one positive to take away.

Well done to Clive and podium, looks like the Reds are walking away with it now!

Bad news that Orange have possibly lost a driver unless Nigel can bring his pc back to life.  Good luck with that Nige, we need you!  Sad

Didn't expect too much from the Mk1, it was steady and stable but just plain slow. Good race for me.....few mistakes although I did find the lead pack interfering at the worst times. For 3 laps I tried to put a lap on Badblood and/or stay with he and Al to play to the end....as the majority of the race the only company I had was the pitboard. Each time I got close, one or 3 of the lapping cars would appear and the other two would escape up the road further... laugh Kept me on the ball to the last lap anyway. And good to get a no problem finish in this class. Had to use the wireless connection for this as Windows had lunched the TCP/IP stack again. And frame rate was pretty bad with so many cars on the server. It was quite difficult to get consistent timing as a consequence. Loaded Win7 last night, and even managed to find Graphics drivers for my old Radeon Xpress 200m that run under Win7....so just in the process of setting up GPL again.....new, fresh install.

I meant to say Geoff. On the rolling lap you disappeared off the grid and didn't re-appear until Crowthorne. Quite hard to stay behind you when you aren't there Grin

As Nigel is unable to continue due to domestic computing difficulties, the Orange Team may recruit a driver of similar standing to complete their team.
The new member will have to continue as if he were Nigel and choose his cars accordingly to comply with the "drive each chassis at least 3 times" rule.

.....The next few laps Steve and I battled, swapping places twice but eventually I managed to drop him and set off after Phil.
8th became 7th when I eventually caught Phil and made an easy pass .....
Yes I think both you and Steve were a bit quicker than me but I managed to drive steadily for a change and didn't have an off.  Most unusual for me Grin

Didn't mind being passed by my teamie and relieved to have kept Mr Bird at bay Tongue

Bad luck Axel, we had a chance of some good points for the Greens.  You were the best of us by some margin!
