Moderator's Report

A popular circuit last season for the Novices makes a welcome return.

Cookie makes a good getaway as Karliss spins his tyres too much off the line allowing Cookie to just about dive into T1 ahead of him.

Karliss did well to avoid a collision and the brave move could have ended in disaster.

Server replay time: 0h01m20s

Fran Molteni tries to follow Blito past Norbert into Double Droite. A combination of a slipstream from Fabio, who he has just overtaken, and cautious braking from Norbert (understandable on lap one), means that Fran closes very quickly on Norbert who has little chance to react and make room. As a result Norbert turns in and the two collide.

Fran was very hard and late on the brakes especially as this was Lap 1 when we always advise drivers to take extra care, and that is the reason that the race post had this:
"As always I would remind you to take care on Lap 1 through the intitial section at Courbe Armand Brouzes and again under braking for Double Droite de l’Aerodrome where the field is likely to get compressed again."

I think Fran would have made the corner had he not hit Norbert, but drivers really do need to learn to take care on Lap1 when a race is seldom won but often lost.

We don't want to discourage overtaking but this was a crazy move with little chance of success.

As Fran rejoins following his off, he almost collects Fabio and pulls right across the front of Al Baldwin.

This rejoin could easily have incurred further penalties, again given that the race post mentions the field getting compressed at this part of the track on lap 1.

Server replay time: 0h01m42s

This incident really begins in the confusion at Double Droite with cars jostling for position on and off the track.
Through DD Al can see Jonny on his inside and gives him room.

As the two of them exit DD and approach the kink Jonny is gaining on Al and moving alongside in a valid passing attempt.

Al seems to be unaware of him at this point and has not seen him in the mirrors since DD so he must assume that Jonny is alongside but he turns in on him.

Jonny saw the contact developing and tightened his line but Al hits him and ends up cartwheeling down the track in tuck position with a double twist.

Server replay time: 0h02m25s

BadBlood and Hendy contest T1 and approach it side by side.

Paul is expecting Hendy to concede the corner which he does not and Paul suffers a warp contact as he takes too tight a line.

Only Paul is affected.

Warp Incident.

Server replay time: 0h02m28s

DU Fossa is hit by a recovering JonnyO who is out of control as his car moves back on to the track.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h03m19s

Hendy Nichols is chasing JonnyO and as they brake for Virage du Parc, Hendy is normally later on the brakes than Jonny which catches him out.
Hendy tries to avoid the inevitable by turning inside Jonny who takes the racing line before being taken out by Hendy.

Server replay time: 0h03m32s

Economia is last in a train of battling cars approaching the final corner and takes a tighter line to the right of the usual racing line.

Billy is on the normal line and closes on him under braking, veering to to the right before making light contact.

Both cars go off left onto the grass.

  • Billy Nobrakespenalty — Simple Rear End Shunt — 1 place lost

Server replay time: 0h11m40s

Fabio and Jason head towards a shared fate at Double Droite side by side with Fabio on the outside.

Neither driver blinks as their feet hover over the brake pedal.

Unfortunately Jason should have pressed his a little earlier as what should have been a tighter inside line turns into a slide outwards towards Fabio and the two make contact.

Server replay time: 0h11m46s

Fran chases Axel towards Double Droite and is much harder and later on the brakes than Axel and he closes up quickly under braking.

Axel goes to cover the inside line as he senses a move coming but that is the line that Fran has picked and the two collide.

There are a few coincidences that contribute to this incident and all have to be considered.
(1) A few seconds earlier Fabio is off the circuit and the yellow flags are waving.
(2) Axel sees the yellow and moves to the inside while slowing more than usual to give Fabio room.
(3) Fran only sees the yellow flags at the last minute, if at all, and does not expect Axel to move over under braking.
(4) Fran is committed to the inside line and stays on the brakes to try and avoid Axel.

At first this appears to be a block by Axel who sees a passing attempt coming but I have to give both drivers the benefit of the doubt, Axel for slowing under yellows and Fran for not being able to clearly see the yellows.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h25m42s

Al Baldwin spins at Double Droite and attempts to spin around before continuing.

Unfortunately his spin puts him facing the racing line and he drives onto the racing line as he sets off again.

Unfortunately Bill chose this precise moment to arrive on the scene and has to take avoiding action to miss Al.

As Al sat facing the wrong way he could neither see nor hear Billy approaching, but to spin in such a way was a risk and he could have simply driven toward the outside of the corner and continued while avoiding the racing line.

Server replay time: 0h27m43s

Fabio and Blito collide at DD for a second time, this time on the exit.
Fabio has passed Blito on the entry and Blito responds at the exit by trying to retake the position but strays too far towards Fabio who suffers a warp contact and spins.

Blito sees he is straying over and tries to correct to the right but leaves it too late.

Blito could have avoided this incident by keeping to his own side of the track but the only contact was a warp contact otherwise the two would have been able to continue.

If you redline the engine when changing gear - that is speed shifting. Effectively you are accelerating whilst in Neutral. It is easier to accidentally speedshift when going down gears than when moving up. Some of the cars are more sensitive than others and if you need to protect the engine you can short shift (i.e. change up early). You still need to be careful when changing down though. Timing is everything and it is easy to lose a lot of time by getting shifts wrong. Engines will take some abuse but you are playing with fire...

When I was blowing engines every race my problem was downshifts, it's so easy to go into the red by downshifting too early.

Hey Karliss

I did a few laps with Cooper and it feels great around corners Grin
How good the car is you can see how Martin managed his race in Monaco!
The only thing it does not like are loooooooooong straights.
But with a little tow at Monza and no mistakes who knows...

Join us tonight at BREASTS, will be FUN!

Cheers chef

Quote
can someone explain what is SPEEDSHIFT?
I use the clutch and the H gear ACTlab, with this equipment is more easy to burn the engine.
1)because sometime i miss the gear both in upgear(and Fabio have overtaken me on the streight)and also dowgear. When i miss the gear is guaranteed to go over the red line.
2)again sometime i fail the synchronism between release the clatch and give gas.

I've never had anyone thank me for giving them a slower chassis but as Tim says, take it as a compliment to your much improved pace.

That was quite entertaining race despite several spins. Had almost race long battle with DuFossa, i lost him every time entering the long straight but i gained massively under braking. Problem was that i was coming from so far back that it seemed risky to dive inside. When i finally measured it and dived inside he surprisingly and cleanly drove around my outside on the exit  Shocked

It was great to race with full grid again, that was my main motivation to try 65s again. It was not as intense as Works 67s can be, but it was good in just a normal fun way.

Re blown engines, i never heard that someone continued regularly blowing engines during longer periods of time. I had that problem in the beginning too. It seems that some poeple just need a bit of time for the moves to become synchronized and automatic. You can't do your gearshifts and lifting off conciously, it must be automatic. Just takes some time for the moves to get imprinted in the brain in the right pattern. I don't think that scientific or analytic approach helps there.

The thing with gear changes is, unless you use an H-pattern shifter, there's a delay between pressing the button and the actual gear change, whether it's up or down. That's because GPL animates the hand of the driver reaching for the lever, so the actual change happens only after the virtual driver grabs the gear change lever. So when changing up, don't lift up as soon as you press your paddle/button, but wait a fraction, then don't lift up completely, just 30-40% is OK, just enough to keep the revs high but not on the limit - you can practice how much throttle that requires simply by pushing down the pedal while in neutral gear. You'll know when you get it right, because the change is smooth then, without any additional clicking sounds.

As for changing down, I often hit the red zone and I suppose that's what bites me back later in the race. As a medium solution, because I dislike changing gears after waiting for the revs to drop a lot, I change down a gear as soon as I start braking, then I wait some before going through the remaining gears.

And one more thing - at the start of the race, it's more important to have smooth gear changes and avoid over-reving, because any such while the engine is cold seems to damage it more and it is more likely to expire later in the race.

Yeah!
I often wonder how fast the guys drive in first two laps, while I do careful until my engine gets over 70°C and  the tyres get light blue colors.
The best qualification times I make in 3rd or 4th lap as the engine has now best power and tyres optimal grip Wink

What I don't understand is the great difference in laptimes with only a few liters in tank. Can 5 liters make such a difference?
That is even with the heaviest car, the Ford MK4  Shocked

Have come to the conclusion this track does not like me.
Practice & qually are ok - under race conditions I seem to find a corner that I consistently screw up. This time the one before the big dunlop arc - have christened it "corner du crap".
So, reasonable qualification & good clean start, picked up a couple of places in DD.  In the run down to Corner du crap I braked hard to avoid Norms rear & span off. About lap 2 I rear ended Economia (I think) - will check replay & report.
Finally found some rythm chasing Al for a few laps.  The car immediately  behind was Karliss & I was actually pulling away from being lapped. Then had about 3 offs in corner du crap & pulled the plug on my race.
Well done Fabio for bringing home some points for the team. Planning to sulk for a few days before the next race.

You were catching me fast at that point, then you disappeared. I wondered what had ahppened to you. Sorry to hear of your problems and hope we can run together at the next track Smiley with me in front  Grin
