Moderator's Report

Server replay time: 0h00m45s

Arf gets away quickly at the drop of the flag and tries to squeeze between Raoni and Ronnie on the row in front of him.
He moves slightly to the right and catches Ronnie before being warped across the track where he collects Axel.
Evil tries to avoid the fun but gets caught up in it and it's every man for himself.

All eventually continue.

Arf did make a great start and although drivers should always be prepared to stay in grid formation or at least to their own side of the grid at the start, and often through T1, overtaking moves are possible, but squeezing in between the two in front of him on the run to a corner like Eau Rouge was too big a risk that definitely didn't pay off.

"On a straight, the overtaking car moves out to overtake but cuts back in too early."

Server replay time: 0h03m10s

Roberto runs wide at Stavelot and after hitting the fence he is thrown across track into the path of JonnyO whose race is ended.

Moderator's Report

Spa seems to be a Marmite track of late but love it or hate it, it usually throws up some great races here at UKGPL.

So who made Eau Rouge, Oh Rouge! and who managed to thread their high speed Porsche through Masta every time and who didn't?

Oh, and lifting for it doesn't count. ;)

Server replay time: 0h01m01s

Pedro vd Berg / Nicky Ickx / Gianni Selitto

Pedro enters Eau Rouge on the right hand side and goes onto the grass where he loses speed. Nicky who was following him closely also slows which allows Gianni to move alongside. Nicky decides to pass and moves to the left but he hits Gianni and then gets knocked into Pedro.

The contact happens on or near the centre line as Gianni was a little too far to the right, and Nicky moved a little too far to the left for his pass.

This doesn't really come under the usual rash type of move that happens at T1 as both drivers were being quite careful. As both contributed towards it by the position of their cars, it is a Contested Side by Side contact: Racing Incident.

"In a corner, after a legitimate overtaking attempt the cars end up side by side. Both drivers move over instead of staying on their own side of the track. Contact is made."

Nicky tries to recover but ends up driving the wrong way to the lowest point of Eau Rouge and makes an U-turn when he gets DQ'd by the server.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h01m03s

Fran Molteni / Marc Lenclen

Fran and Marc are following the action and both try to avoid the spinning cars by going to the left.

Fran would have made it but just gets clipped by Marc and spins.

Marc had little time to react and does not really move over much into Fran so it would seem harsh to punish him, especially as his car lost a wheel in all the excitement.

For those interested here you can find info how it works GPL online and the Bandwith Patch: http://westrab.home.xs4all.nl/gpl.htm

On T7 and GPG servers the BW patch is set to show 3 cars behind and, with a value of 132 on server side, 5 ahead of the clients car so in the client's replay you can see 9 cars total.
When we went, for a mistake, to a value of 384, that would show all cars, we experienced a lot of connection and stuttering troubles with a full field on the server.
We could stress a bit further with a value of 164 that will show 10 cars around (7+3) and see what happens.

With actual setting starting from the back of a full field you'll see 5 cars ahead + the 3 first cars on the grid that you would see on your mirrors if you could Wink

Hope it helps
Ciao

Interesting Fulvio - I took a look at the Rouen and Oulton Park replays out of interest and could never see more than 9 cars in total but cars obviously merge as they pass each other so I wonder if they become one 'object'.

The starting point for all this was that Hristo could only see two cars behind on UKGPL3 when I was hosting a BREASTS race last Wednesday. I have amended the patch to draw four maximum and amended the Core.ini to run at 132 (it was 100). When joining via the multiplayer screen, does the client setting take priority? I assume not.

I have definitely been in situations on the grid where I can see more than five cars ahead though - in fact seeing lots of cars ahead is my usual situation Wink

I guess the question is - "can we bump up the values to give a fuller view" now that we all have faster connections. That would definitely be an issue for something like the Porsche Cup where the field can be bunched for quite a long time. If higher values give more warp though, that would not be good.

Also how does the 60fps patch affect things - if the server is still sending out info at the same rate then what is there to draw quicker?

It is clear!

It should be preferably to race with all the objects you're racing with in sight but...obviously...playability is the first thing to aim otherwise we could have all in sight but warping and freezing a lot that is not what we all would expect from a SIMULATOR  Wink

If I don't remember bad, already in 2002 when I flew "Aces High", we could have had in sight 64 airplane surrounding us (friends and foes) at the same moment and when we were participating in a bombing range it was spectacular to see a lot of airplanes flying around you, bombers, escort and enemies.

I'm curious what settings did the UKGPL servers had before we started using Fulvio's. I know it's down to location, connection and hardware as well, but on the UKGPL_5 for instance (which I believe doesn't exist anymore) it was always very stable, very low latency and still could see a lot of cars ahead (and definitely more than 2 or maybe even more than 3 in the mirrors).

It could be a real problem the case in which a pilot should have 3 or 4 chasers that whispers in his neck because each one should be popping up from the Hiperspace beside the car or in the mirror without any clue and this could be catastrophic.

I doubt you've driven on a GPL server that draws more than 3-4 cars in the mirrors at the same time. For sake of having low latency servers don't run on maximum bandwidth settings, but also not on the minimum (1-2 in mirrors), so the idea is to find a good compromise.

Angry Angry Angry THX a lot to G.Sutcliff or whatever his name is.  He must be blind , chrashed me out in T1 while I was taken care on the car in front of me , which was allready on the green .

Whats so complicated on ? : `take care at T1 during first lap´
 Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

well , my car stranded behind the leftside armco  and I had to drove in wrong direction to get back on track ..
Roll Eyes got DQ from server for that .. Huh shouldnt checkpoints been disabled ?

exactly what I was looking for after an week with hard work allover   , great stuff.

pitty enough I had absolutely no time for practise , due too real work , but been stranded that way is so.....

not happy lap 1 for mee too.. involved in same 3 cars avoidable normal race accident as Pedro... fortunately car was not damageg so I was still in race although with already 10s of gap from driver behind... my race was over when I made a face to face with a driver doing parking operations on top of Rouge..

it's a pity.. Spa deserves a better race.. it was fun tille there

I have to apologize to Hristo for the incident I've caused involving also him at the stavelot corner entry. I didn't se him behind and beside so I've tried to change direction to a better line for the corner entry but he was already in that place and so I've hit him loosing a wheel and so causing  him to loose at least 10 secs (I think), AMEN!

No other things to say only...my mistake.

If the server DQ's you you won't show up in the results but you can always continue and save your client replay and let the Mods decide if the DQ was deserved or not.

T1 carnage handed me several places and then Fran got by and that was the last I saw of anyone (except for a stranded Clouds). Lonely but OK. Drove for a finish but could have given up after 5 laps...

Was hoping that Goran and Andreas might crash as they passed me... but no.

Hristo caught me at the worst possible place - hope I didn't make it too bad mate but I find that corner the hardest on the track.

Wink did tried that for  one lap but wasnt sure if the server would simply disconnect me after a period of time.
well and anyhow me engine wasnt on full power anymore after that chrash  ( couldnt hardly get into 5th gear .. )
But good to know that it is up to the moderators if DQ or not . thx too for this info.
