Bastian rearends Phil into the hairpin. Phil was close behind Billy, and Bastian gained while braking and had the better line. At the same point Phil was slightly slower than the lap before, and Bastian was slightly faster entering. There was no attempt to overtake from Bastian, he got caught out by Phil his line and speed. Phil had to do a reset, Bastian could continue.
Phil states: I left my braking quite late and consequently had the inside line. I was as close to Billy as was possible to be and I had made the corner when Bastian rear ended me.
Bastian says: I was unexpectingly fast approaching Billy and Phil towards the hairpin. Phil went inside and I went to the outside to have some space. I had to turn in and was not expecting Phil to -block- the hairpin and unfortunately hit Phil.
Even when Phil his line was not optimal which compromised his entry speed, the responsibility has to lie with Bastian. When approaching and gaining on the car in front, you need to be prepared to adjust your entry and cornering speed to the car(s) in front.
This was avoidable, and it has to be a Simple Rear End Shunt: Penalty 1 Place.
2. The victim had partially lost control before contact and consequently his line was unusual. The shunter was in full control.
