Moderator's Report

A great opening race to season 22 Gt's.

The rolling start was good for 95% of the grid until T2 and then it was good for 100% until T6, where it dropped to 95% again!!!.
Fulvio thought that he had gained an extra 2 cylinders in his Porsche at the start, as he passed many cars around the outside of T1, until reality dawned at T2. Juha was rolling comfotably until he got a wheel on the grass at T6 and had to suffer the embarresment of waving to the whole grid as it cruised pasthis stranded Lola.
There were only 2 reported incidents after that, both involving the eventual winner of the race.

Server replay time: 0h11m30s

Rash move at Turn 7 is how Samb reported it but "opportunist and ill fated" might be a fairer description.
Somehow Sam managed to carry enough speed off of T6 to get partially alongside Al before T7, a distance of about 50 mtrs??!! This caught Al completely by surprise as Sam's Lola was now precisely where Al thought his clear apex ought to be.
The contact fired Al into the barriers and he lost several places whilst Sam escaped unscathed, continuing on to win the race.
The contact happened because Al did not see or expect Sam to be able to get his car into that position in such a tight sequence of bends, otherwise he might well have left room for both cars and avoided contact.

This is a classic example of the "perceived overlap" dilemma in GPL. I suggest that anyone who has not read the info here..https://www.ukgpl.com/rec_dvr_beh/rec_driver_beh.htm reads it NOW.

Al's car is intending to take the normal racing line, from wide on the left of the track, tight to the right through the apex and running out to the left again afterwards. Because his line through the bend is on a greater radius he actually starts his turn in much earlier than Sam will.
Sam is making a dive up the inside and cannot therefore take the classic sweep through the corner. He must literally follow the edge of the track on the inside and therefore his "turn in point" is only 10 mtrs short of the apex in this instance.
At Al's turn in point, Sam has only 30% overlap and can be said to have no right to the corner. But, at Sam's turn in point Sam has almost 100% overlap!! just at the moment that Al hits him. I think we have to rule Sam's attempted overtake as "ambitious", because the only way that both cars were going to make this corner, would require Al to give up his right to the racing line and allow Sam to go through on the inside.

The overtaking driver had NOT achieved 100% or greater overlap at the point of turn-in. There was no loss of control by either driver. Penalty for overtaking driver.

This type of incident occurs regularly in on line races and we have to moderate fairly and consistantly in these cases. We have therefore always deemed the turn in point to be that of the leading car, which in this case is Al's.

I have asked the opinion of the other moderators on this incident and the general agreement is that a penalty should be applied. But, Al has asked that no penalty be given because he knows from experience that Sam is not a reckless driver and would not have risked such a move if he did not think it fair. Had this been a Lap 1 incident Al would not have had that discretion and the Mods would have applied a penalty.

We have decided therefore, because of Al's comments, to mitigate this to a warning instead of the usual penalty.

Incident at T6 with Clive Gardner and Samb.

I would like to be able( on a purely personal level as I finished behind Sam) penalise Sam and drop him 10 places, but this was a warp contact that caused Clive's car to spin.
The replays clearly show that there was no actual contact, although Sam is very close to the rear of Clive's car.

Warp Contact....Racing Incident

Good race for me; in fact I can't believe my start to this season.  I tried hard to get on terms with Alex but the Porker just didn't have enough legs on the straight.  When I did get on his tail, the twisty bits were just a bit too tight to make a save attempt at a pass.  I'm sure Alex had me covered anyway.  If I had managed to get through I'm sure he would have taken the place back immediately.  Did manage to keep ahead of Al but only because he made a couple of mistakes.  The porker was a sitting duck for the Lola on the straight.

Same for me - I haven't been last yet  Grin

It is frustrating. Feel like I am improving but everyone else has too so relatively I am worse off...

Please God the Novices will be kind...

Keep at it Paul, things are sure to get better as the season goes on  Smiley.

My race was brilliant fun. After Juha's disco (bad luck mate), it was me and Al fighting for the top spot with Clive not far behind. I found overtaking here incredibly difficult. Al was just too good on the brakes and with us driving the same car, I couldn't make much headway in the slipstream. Eventually after about 10 laps, I made a cheeky dive at turn 7 that almost paid off. I was just about alongside Al, but with these awful mirrors he didn't see me and we touched. I emerged unscathed but Al was not so lucky. I'm sorry about that Al. I could have a bit more patient; I was concentrating so much at passing you I wasn't really thinking about the terrible mirrors.

So the lead was mine, for a bit. Clive caught me and he had a race-long duel. It was terrific fun, I was fortunate it was so tricky to pass here as Clive was surely quicker. With about 15 to go, I had a poor exit out of turn 8. Clive pounced and I was down to 2nd. I tried to get the lead back but it was my turn to experience the problems of overtaking a car at Surfer's Paradise  Roll Eyes. Sadly a few laps later, Clive got a bit out of shape at turn 7 and lost the back end. I was quite close behind, so I hope that wasn't warp inflicted? It left me to drive my own race, collecting the first win of the season.

Relatively pleased with my race. Whether or not I keep the win though remains to be seen.

Fun race that one.  Had a race long battle with Fulvio, initially caught up behind Tim who was going well in the big Ford and not providing any opportunity to get through (that is a compliment to how well he was handling that thing, not a dig Wink).  After a couple of laps Tim ran a little wide and I had to take the chance while it was there and got through.  An incident between Fulvio and Tim allowed me to build a slight gap, but Fulvio managed to close it in over the next several laps and passed.  I tried to hang on to him but couldn't get close enough until the last 2 laps but he managed to hold it together under what little pressure I could apply.

Grats to Sam (pending mod Wink) and well done to Phil, a great drive in the Porsche.

Very satisfying to see an almost full grid for this GT first round. Let's hope that each team pushes for every point they can at every race to keep this championship really close.

First of all... Thank you Fulvio for giving me a big smile at the start Grin, as we eased off the grid a Porsche came flying past on the outside of T1 and you could almost hear the "Doh!" as he remembered that it was a ROLLING START!!! When we passed Fulvio's car parked inside T2 I'm sure he was putting on some very dark sunglasses and keeping well down in the seat of his car lol

Second,  hard luck for Juha to spin out and then disco, when he was one of the favourites to win this race with some very impressive qually laps.

After Juha vanished from the lead Al took his opportunity and put in some very quick early laps, followed by Samb and a little farther back I was trying to protect my rear tyres and keep them in sight. The 3 Lolas slowly pulled a gap on Alex Barresi in his Mk2 Ford ( great drive BTW Alex in a car that must have been a handful around this track).
After about 5 laps I noticed that Samb had upped his pace, just slightly, and was closing in on Al and dropping me behind. Waza training teaches you that in order to take advantage of any situation you have to be in the right place at the right time! So, if there was going to be some "action" I needed to be there when it happened. A few banzai laps and the gap started to close as Samb's pressure on Al caused some defensive driving and they both lost a little pace.

I was about 50mtrs behind when Al and Samb made contact and Al unfortunately was spun around. I was fortunate to be able to grab both door handles and pull hard, thereby making my Lola 20cms narrower so that it would fit through the gap without any contact or losing any speed. Shocked
That put me into 2nd spot  Grin with Samb not too far ahead, but just out of slipstream range it seemed. The next 10 laps were a case of pushing as hard as I felt I could without making a stupid mistake. I needed to get closer to Samb and pick up the slipstream before I could hope to make a pass...he was obviously pushing hard as well, as the occasional minor mistakes showed. Slowly the gap came down as my fuel level dropped and I found that I could attack T1 and T8 with full power until I was sat on Samb's tail.
Like Samb said, this is a very difficult track to find a passing spot and although I felt I was marginally quicker than Samb, it was not enough to give me a clear passing chance anywhere. The best option appeared to be braking into T2 after giving everything through T1 to close up and make a move down the inside. But Samb was wise to this and kept the door well closed!!!
Backmarkers added some spice to our battle and I had to make some very "positive" moves in order to follow Samb  Roll Eyes as he passed people in the braking zones.
Eventually Samb made an error as we came on to the main straight and I used my momentum and the slipstream to make the pass down the inside to T1 and then go defensive into T2 to hold the place. Now it was Samb's turn to find a way past and although I tried hard to put some distance between us, I found that I was overheating my rear tyres and losing drive out of some corners.  I felt that I could hold him behind, if I had to, for the rest of the race. I will have to look at the replay later to see what happened when I spun  Roll Eyes and apply a totally fair and impartial 10 place penalty  Grin.

By the time I had extracated myself from the grass bank, Alex was past me and I was down to 3rd spot and the horizon was taking on a very red misty colour!!  With great self control I waited for a few laps for my tyres to cool and then set about regaining 2nd place. Once I got the tow from Alex it was quite easy to out brake the Mk2 into T2 and then ease away for a comfortable finish on the podium.

Grats to Samb for the win ( subject to impartial moderation of course!) and for a great ( almost) race long battle.

Bit disappointed about this one but that's racing. Rolling start was rather chaotic - Fulvio gave me a chuckle when he came blasting past everyone with his killer start off the grid & then I was shocked to see Juha go off on the formation lap. That left me clear in the lead but I was concerned with high engine temps in the fragile Lola & after about 10 laps Sam & Evil had closed up behind. With not much in the way of overtaking spots I was rather concerned about possible incidents & sadly the battle for the lead ended up with me in the barrier facing the wrong way Tongue. With such limited opportunities I can understand why Sam tried the move but I'd already turned in when he took a lunge up my inside so for me it wasn't really on... having said that, if I'd known he was there I'd have done my best to leave space as I think a podium would have been possible as the 3 of us were some way ahead at that point.

Anyway the incident dropped me to 5th & after that I had difficulty regaining my race rhythm. Caught Phil & even managed to pass at one point but then overcooked it trying to get a run on Alex for 3rd & ended up dropping back to 5th again. After that I spent the rest of the race chasing Phil who was driving supremely well & very quickly - we started to catch backmarkers & the delays getting past allowed me to close right on Phil's tail. As we came up to lap Jason he moved offline to let us through - Phil nipped past & I went to follow him through the gap, but I'm not sure if Jason realised I was there or maybe thought I was fighting for position but I found the door was closing on me. I tried to move as far to the outside as I could to leave room but Jason's tail drifted wide & we connected. Gutted to see Jason couldn't carry on as I hate to end anyone's race so apologies for that. Congrats to Sam, Evil & Alex. And a special well done to Steve our team supersub who did really well especially considering he was only drafted in at the last minute.

Yes this MK2 is a handful on this track!

So I did my own pace...
I followed Nigel half the race in a save distance in a 10th place, when I mentioned that my MK2 combattant Doni had used my slipstream to close up more and more. So I had to give a little more to keep him behind.
This worked well til Nigel ran wide in T4 and I slowed a little down to avoid any contact with him. But Doni used that weakness and passed me the next corner...
I followed him close til the last lap when I made my only mistake in that T3 and fell on the roof.
S+r followed by a S+G just before crossing the line in the pits!
Kept me in 9th.

SORRY for Juha who had bad luck in the 1st lap.
Gratulations to David who managed to bring home the MK2 in good position on that track as a total newbie in this car  thumbup2

But Juha is not a Team Green Driver, he is in Team International!

No worries m8 - I chose to retire at that point but I could have continued as I had not used my S+R. I was pretty annoyed with myself if thruth be known... I had practised hard for this event but on the night I just could not get it together - the 330 P4 was all over the track.. maybe a bad set of tyres>  Roll Eyes
As for the crash itself, I knew you were on the outside of me somewhere but on that corner I'm afraid I had little chance of holding the car on a tight enough line to let you through Sad

After have checked replay...

Sorry Nigel, I got confused after my embarrasing not rolling start and didn't let by you too.  Sad

Sorry to my team mate Sky while lapping him, I think there was a little misanderstanding and I rear ended him. Those 910 have a very long nose  Sad

Happened also with Steve in the early laps, but I think there was a sudden slow down that caught me off guard like with Tim, at least in my replay...  angel
