Moderator's Report

Lap 8 and the Curve Grande incident.
Although the results of this contact were somewhat spectacular and involved several cars as the aftermath unfolded I am reluctant to apply any penalties.
4 cars are approaching Curve Grande and D Curtis has used the speed of his Matra to carry him to the front of the group. Ronnie is to his outside and prevents Dave from moving wide onto the racing line. Dean has been opportunist and tucked in behind the Matra to benefit from the slipstream and is closing on Dave into CG. There is a 4th car that is keeping a safe distance but he is not involved until later.
I think perhaps it is a little unfair to place all the blame on Dave's shoulders because he slowed suddenly for CG. I am mindful of the fact that he was jousting with 2 very experienced drivers who would have expected him to carry far more speed into the corner and still hold the inside line. However Dave admits that he was aware of Ronnie alongside him and did not want to risk sliding wide and collecting him, so he downshifts and brakes. This sudden and unexpected decrease in speed catches Dean completely cold and he hits the rear of Dave's Matra.
The result is that all 4 cars are involved in the incident, one of which loses a wheel and is left parked on the racing line. As he attempts to get himself out of the way 2 more cars make contact and further mayhem ensues.
If Dave felt that he could not have held a tight line and carry his speed through CG, he is not at fault. One could say that he should not have put himself in a position where he was forced to reduce speed so dramatically, but it was not a malicious act. Although our rules stae that it is the following car that must be sure to avoid any contact, it would be harsh to place the blame on Dean.
Although as an innocent victim in all of this I would have liked to give everyone a 5 place penalty, I have to call this a Racing Incident.

Walter Conn has been honest enough to confess to using 2 x S/R and has been sent to the naughty step. Oh! and he has also been DQ'd

  • Racing incident

After last season's almost blemish free behaviour, it looks like the incident fairy finally found us!

Server replay time: 0

Lap 5 on the entry to Parabolica Fran attempts to pass Dean around the outside. dean has taken a defensive inside line and hugs the kerb. Dean touches the kerb and is deflected slightly . Meanwhile Fran has drawn alongside Dean but is very close and the 2 cars touch sending Fran out into the gravel trap.
Fran was quite entitled to attempt the pass, however he should have kept his car on the outer 50% of the track width and left Dean with the inside 50%. If he had kept to his own side of the tarmac there would have been no contact as Dean's deflection off the kerb was minimal and quickly corrected.
as Fran was the one who suffered most I am calling this a Racing Incoident but with an advisory note to Fran to keep to his half of the track when passing other cars

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0

Lap 10 and Fran has drafted Ronnie on the run to Lesmo 1 and puts his car down the inside. Ronnie moves across to take the racing line and makes contact with Fran who is fully alongside.
It looks like Ronnie lost sight of Fran, and did not expect him to be there.
Ronnie does leave some room but not enough and is punted into the armco by Fran who is clearly alongside and on his own side of the track. Once again I think the person who made the error suffered most, so I am calling a Racing Incident with a cautionary note about watching where other cars are.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h05m50s

Lap 4 and Fran and mark are side by side going towards Curve Grande. From the server replay it looks like Mark does twitch the steering wheel just before the contact and his car moves slightly to the right.
Unfortunately Fran is right alongside and contact is made at just about the fastest point on the track. Mark is spun out and Fran continues.
From the server evidence it looks like the "twitch" by Mark is to blame, but maybe Fran would have been wiser to leave a just little more room between the cars.

Moderator's Report

Although there are no reported incidents, this race was not without its share of contacts and exchanging of paint and rubber samples. I counted 10 cars involved at Curve Grande lap 1 and a further 3 or 4 at Parabolica on the same Lap!! Just a little more care and leave a few metres more room and these things would not happen so often.

Server replay time: 0

Nicky's rear ending of Axel on the entry to Curve Grande falls in the red zone and initiated a crash fest involving 10 cars. This was a small error of judgement which prompted a huge incident.

As this is in the red zone I have to apply a penalty for blatant rear end collision.

There were other incidents throughout lap 1, but all fell outside the end of the red zone (2nd Lesmo) and all involved a massive amount of warp and extended collision box action. Some cars were metres apart and still became involved in the action.
This should serve as a reminder to give each other more room, especially on the first lap where gaps between cars are small and the margin for error is even smaller.

Server replay time: 0

There were no other reported incidents, but I did witness more than one car untangling himself from another's wheels.

Thanks for the F2 race everyone! I enjoyed immensely. Sadly, I will be disqualified because I used two shift-r to finish the race. It was great fun. I hope that I do not get a penalty, but if I do it is ok.

Sorry if I caused anyone trouble in the braking zone. I was braking a little early, and I was slowing down a bit more than necessary for the corner entry. I hope to practice more so that I don't lose control.

Sorry that I did not have time for the 69X race. I was looking forward to it more so than the F2 cars, but real life takes precedence. See you at the next race, WC

Disappointing night. First F2 race I got collected by Greg, np, but the second time I got collected made me retire, aggressive rejoin and overdriving, not sure who it was. 69X race started with huge (server)warp in CG, and the cars were all over the place on Lap 1, and then I think I hit Martin, not sure, due to warp I'm afraid...sorry if it was my warp...I had the conn meters off as Greg recommended...

Called it a day after that, hope the rest had a better night Wink

Both races were a bit messy as Curva Grande on lap 1 in both races seemed to catch people out Roll Eyes But hats off Paul for the wicked FL in the 69x race  Cool

Grats to both podiums and see you at the next one.

Unfortunately,  too much (multiple!) contact in race1.  I'll take a look at the replays at some point,   but whether it was all me or not - obviously I didn't intend to be there at the same time.  There was a big punt towards the end of the event (last corner);  apparently just misjudged it.

Race2 seemed to have less contact from where I was sitting.  Although, sometimes replays do seem to show a different event...
Unlucky Mr Jones.  Yes,  congrats on that fastest lap Paul.  However, maybe some of the competition can claim to have assisted in that achievement? hehe! Smiley

Despite all this doom&gloom,  all in all - an enjoyable Fri evening.

Thanks all.

Cheers,
Dave

About the lap 8 going into CG contact: at the time I thought you had slowed drastically and unavoidably, but watching the replay and comparing several of your other laps, it was just your line, and it was over eagerness on my part (that I'd been good at keeping in check previously) what wrought my downfall and yours, and to the greatest extent Evil. So sorrys to all.  Embarrassed

Had a good time dicing with Ronnie, and then Fran and Evil after that, til I _just_ clipped the armco coming out of Para penultimate time.

Forgot to save 69 rpy, so have to wait for server copy...

In F2
I had a good start but at CG I had a partial freeze of ~4sec with a message in center of the monitor Shocked
I hope I caused not too much debris, but I could go on with strange coloured bars on top and bottom instead of black.
Was in 9th place then and had fun to fight my way back to the lead with a wonderfull BMW Grin

69X
I messed the start a little and was suddenly airborne just before T1...
Again I had to recover in 8th and fight my way up to 2nd. Wink
I was amazed to see Paul driving in such a perfect way and could only catch him using all my luck into CG  thumbup1

Maybe for the next Friday I will make an extra wide grid to minimize the T1 risk  Wink

I was amazed to see Paul driving in such a perfect way and could only catch him using all my luck into CG  thumbup1

So was I!

I got home just in time to join so no setups and no time for qually. Took the Lotus and used a tweaked default. It handled beautifully but as per the start was wrecked by a crash a CG. People really need to be patient first time round. Dead last but had AndyL for company and we put some laps in together. He was quicker but handicapped by having a Coop. We swapped places several times and then caught Walter. The three of us lapped together and Walt passed me ater a second mistake at Lesmo2. Andy had stretched a lead but we caught him up and I drafted the pair of them down to Parabolica. I was very careful about moving across on Andy and as I concentrated on passing Walt with the tow I completely forgot about braking! Not  a great idea at Para. Bent the car and after that I just had to be careful as I had a puncture. Great, close racing though and even though it was lowly, it was great fun and I was pleased with the drive.

Second race, had the 49b and again tweaked the default. Moved the brake balance for 49% to 53% and found that 30/85 was just too twitchy so plumped for 60/60. Still tricky but controllable. Pleased with an untowed 1:30 in qually and set off. Once again a crash ahead which I slowed for but too much wreckage. Got away and the car had minor damage but found myself catching people ahead. Car was just great. As Cookie pulled off a great pass into CG I left my braking just a shade too late and caught the armco. Spin and set off put me back in 10th behind Nicky but I slowly ate into his lead - just couldn't get that last 40 yards. Nicky was defending well but then we caught Martin and both Nicky and maddog went off at Parabolica. That released me and I climbed the ranks as people fell off in front. Tried very hard to catch Dave but ran out of laps although I was marginally quicker I think. Raoni kept me honest and I was really surprised when I sam my lap time. I was concentrating so hard that I didn't look at the sector times at all.

Great racing with Walt, Doni, Andy, Nicky, Cookie, Martin, Dave, Mark and Raoni - how good is this format?

To cap it all Fabio continues his brilliant start to claim the win. The Heavies definitely had a chassis advantage but we still had to put it in the right place on track. BIG congrats to the wolf! Really pleased for him.

That was some wild racing!

I got a little impatient too early with the F2's. I got such a good tow that I couldn't resist taking it to 3rd place entering the CG. It wouldn't have been bad if I hadn't spun the car trying to run an outside line through the first Lesmo. My apologies Robert and whoever else had nowhere to go. I should have took a comfortable position at the back of the lead pack. Somehow the car made it through that debacle intact.

That second race was a real challenge. Tried weaving my way through the turn 1 melee but really didn't stand a chance with all the warping I was seeing. Got another bad warp exiting Ascari on lap 1. All of the sudden a car appeared in the same spot as myself. That flipped the Matra and had to use a reset. It was big change going from the F2's to the 69's. I couldn't get the braking right in the 69's after the F2s. Every time a I clawed back a spot I'd spin trying to break the slipstream through the turns. Andy and Dave gave me fits with those wingless cars. I could run them down but couldn't pass them where I needed to. And I can't remember how many times I got by just to give back the position a few turns later.

All in all, I had a pretty good time. See you next week.

Frustrating events for me, essentially got towed around in both races as my cars not quick enough.  Despite that I managed to get into good positions, but threw away a 69 podium because I was an idiot.  Well done to Axel and Fabio.

Just had a quick look at the replays and there was quite a bit of action!

On my side I would like to apologise to Greg and Fran for my line into lesmo 1 in the F2 race. Watching it back I squeezed you both mid race. Fortunately I suffered and you both did not but regardless my bad.
Some interesting driving elsewhere but I am not going to point the finger as we all have different views. But one thing I will say, in my opinion we should be using loose grids in every race in every series.

Thanks again everyone for some top, if explosive at times, fun.
