Season 33 Historic Trophy - Round 7– Charade / Clermont -Ferrand
The 7th race in the 1966 Grand Prix series takes us to Clermont-Ferrand on circuit CHARADE in Auvergne where four Formula One French Grands Prix were held : 1965, 1969, 1970 and 1972. Due to drivers cutting corners, a stone thrown from Emerson Fittipaldi's Lotus hit Helmut Marko in the eye during the 1972 French Grand Prix, ending his F1 career, as well as that of the circuit. The stones also had caused ten deflated tyres, but no big crashes. The French Grand Prix moved back to the new Paul Ricard Circuit, where the French Grand Prix was held in 1971.
Chris Amon -who recently passed away- set the laprecord here in 1972 in his Matra, in an epic recovery effort to finish third after having suffered from a puncture.

Drivers must complete 50% of each race to score.
Only reported incidents will be moderated, there is no Red Zone.

Handicapping and chassis allocation.
This season the Historics will be using a token system which allows drivers to purchase any chassis of their choice, 2 litre or 3 litre, for a given number of tokens as published on the championship standings page. Drivers classed as Amateurs will be allocated an additional 10 tokens.  The token allocation will not be managed in SRou this season so (unlike the 67F1 Works and 67F1 Privateer divisions) the tokens available to each driver will not appear in the championship table (when the mouse pointer is hovered over the driver's total).  Rather, the available tokens will be published in the race announcement.  See below.

Available Tokens:
Note: These are the tokens available to each driver before the 10 tokens are added for making the race start.

Between heat (31C) and humidity (ridiculous), only had one lap a time's worth of concentration today.

Sorry for sloppy rejoin in front of Clive(?). Waited til I could hear no engines coming, popped over the bank, and saw you approaching quickly so I stayed stationary and said "eep". GJ avoiding, and grats to finishers on this tough track.

I absolutely hate this track, never been able to do anything here. I did amuse myself by getting overtaken by Andreas twice on the same lap (without overtaking him BACK) by letting him past then slide down a hill in front of him :-)

Jack hit me twice on the opening lap and lost me the two places I'd won, but it made no difference to the end result. Indeed, i'm just surprised I lasted so long, and even got points for 5th....

Yeah, I regretted letting you through on the inside after the straight when I ran into the back of you and lost a wheel.

You might mention that you clipped the edge of the track and locked the brakes leaving a skid trail though, that could have contributed to the incident?  Its not a great place on the track suddenly to need to be 20 mph slower, I would have appreciated having the place you won returned instead.

....

Wish I had some fun there aswell. But in fact was again not able to join the Grid. Hit the Green button for the start and once again GPL stopped working. Must be something wrong with my 66 Installation... oops

Grats to tris on a dominant win and Axel for a 2nd spot well defended.
This is a Marmite circuit. It seems that you either love it or hate it and  Clermont has never been one of my favourites. I usually like challenging tracks, but this one I find frustrating as I never seem to find the sweet spot.
For last nights race I changed my normal favourite car ( 2litre Brab BRM ) and simply chose something different because I did not expect to survive to the flag.

Found an old setup for the Eagle Climax from my archives and did a few laps on race fuel to get a feel for it. The surprise was that it felt really stable and the 2.7ltr engine had loads of grunt out of slow corners and up the hill.
Tris was super fast on pole and Axel was also in the baby Brabham, with Dean in a 2.7 Brab 4th looked about the best I good even dream of. Sure enough the lead trio raced away off the grid and I was struggling to hang on. But gradually I was finding more and more speed in the Eagle and started to gain on Axel in 3rd. I made a few mistakes and lost ground when I should have got closer to Axel, and it was when I was chasing him again that Dean leapt over the grass bank to ambush me  Shocked

For the moment I thought that both our races were going to end right there, but somehow I tightened the line and somehow avoided Dean. I was actually laughing out loud going up the hill at having avoided the roadblock  sweatdrop lol

I changed my lines and gears for parts of the track to use the grunt in the Eagle and started to chip away at my lap times, gradually gaining the confidence to push harder, and go faster. I caught Axel and promptly made a mistake to drop back again  Undecided. But I was able to close up again very quickly as I found even more pace. I was right back on Axel's tailpipes for the last lap, but there are very few real passing places on this track and there was no way to steal 2nd place.
I still had 6 galls of fuel at the end, so there was maybe a little more pace in the Eagle and I was surprised and pleased to see that I was within a few tenths of Tris' best lap.
Great fun chasing Axel ( and avoiding Dean!) .

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet.  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error.  There was no token overspend for this round so no one is disqualified.

Note: These are the tokens available to each driver before the 10 tokens are added for making the race start.
