Season 34 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 3 – Brands Hatch

The third race in the 1955 Grand Prix series takes us to Brands Hatch in Kent, England. The first race to be held at Brands Hatch took place on 16th April 1950, it featured 500cc cars competing over a version of the "Indy" circuit (without Druids Hill Bend) in an anti-clockwise direction. During the 1950s the track was extended to include Druids Hill bend, Paddock Hill bend and the racing direction was changed to clockwise. It wasn't until 1960 that the full Grand Prix circuit was created. The British Grand Prix has been held at Brands Hatch on 12 occasions and the European Grand Prix has been held there twice.  The 1966 Grand Prix was won by Jack Brabham and the 1968 race by Jo Siffert driving a Brabham Repco BT19 and a Lotus-Cosworth 49B respectively.  There have also been numerous non-championship Formula 1 races most notably the Race of Champions in 1967 which was won by Dan Gurney in the Eagle-Weslake T1G.

Handicapping and chassis allocation.
This season the 1955 Grand Prix cars will again be using a token system which allows drivers to purchase any chassis of their choice for a given number of tokens as published on the championship standings page. Drivers classed as Amateurs will be allocated an additional 10 tokens.  The token allocation will not be managed in SRou this season so (unlike the 67F1 Works and 67F1 Privateer divisions) the tokens available to each driver will not appear in the championship table (when the mouse pointer is hovered over the driver's total).  Rather, the available tokens will be published in the race announcement. See table below.

Available Tokens:
Note: These are the tokens available to each driver before the 10 tokens are added for making the race start.

Right ... for sentimental reasons ... I learned to drive with an R8 ... similar to dauphine and gordini

This gordini is faster than my loved R8  laugh

The Gordini may be faster, but it appears to have an unbreakable magnetic attraction to straw bales.... as I discovered after a couple of laps  Undecided

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet.  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error.  There was no token overspend for this round so no one is disqualified.

Yes well done Fran. I tried to pressure you into a mistake but you were driving very well. In the end it was me that made the mistakes. However it was still my best race for quite a while. Finishing without being lapped is always a success for me  thumbup2

LOL  At least the straw bales didn't cost you any Thornton Dollars!

@Fran  Well done that Soggy!

@ Phil thanks for the update.  Thankfully my calcs have matched so far.  Grin

As for the race, I made a good start and took the lead, only to mess it up later on lap one.  That dropped me behind Uli and Alessandro.
Uli's Lancia looked to be a bit of a handful and it wasn't long before he took to the grass at Druids.

I then had to chase Alessandro, who very helpfully also went off, thus putting me back in the lead.

At half distance I thought that I had it but Uli was probably waiting for the fuel load to come down and give him back the car that he qualified with.
I had had a 7 second lead for quite a while but suddenly that was gone and there was nothing that I could do to stop Uli driving past.  I did my best to stay with him, hoping for another error, but there was nothing coming.

In the last part of the race I had no brakes at all at Druids.  I suspect that Uli was much the same.

Grats to Uli and off to Hockenheim for some practice.  Don't think that I have done that one in 55s.

I'm not going to be around in 17th March so I'm going to have to ask one of the other moderators to provide a server for Round 5. It would be easier if Round 5 was at a circuit we've used before so I'm proposing to swap venues for Rounds 5 and 6.  The new calendar would be Albi on 17th March and Dundrod on 31st March. Please post something here or PM me if you have any objections.
