Season 34 Historic Trophy – Round 5 – WATKINS-GLEN

For the 5th round we stay in the United States. Watkins Glen International (nicknamed "The Glen") is an automobile race track located in Watkins Glen, New York, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake. It was long known around the world as the home of the Formula One United States Grand Prix, which it hosted for twenty consecutive years (1961–1980), but the site has been home to road racing of nearly every class, including the World Sportscar Championship, Trans-Am, Can-Am, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the International Motor Sports Association and the IndyCar Series.

The circuit is known as the Mecca of North American road racing and is a very popular venue among fans and drivers. The facility is currently owned by International Speedway Corporation.

Race List = iGOR
Server = UKGPL_9

Time = 21:00 UK time (21:00 GMT)
Track = Watkins-Glen (papyrus)
Race length = 45 Laps (<50 minutes)
Variant = 1966
Password: see above
Driver lists and divisional rules can be found on the championship standings page
60fps patch used   = 60fpsV2newmod
Damage Model = Pro
Qualifying time = 30-45 minutes
Replays = here or here

There is no Red Zone. Moderating will be on reported incidents only. Remember that lap 1 incidents carry an additional penalty place.

The chassis token system is explained on the Historics Trophy standings page.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

A driver must have sufficient tokens for the chassis he drives in the race.  Any driver who does not have sufficient tokens will be disqualified from the result and his tokens will be set to zero.

The chassis a driver uses in qualifying are disregarded when determining his token spend.
Note:  This is to cater for the instances when a driver either does not start or inadvertently joins with the wrong chassis and subsequently rejoins the server in another.

Any tokens not spent at the end of the season are ignored and are not used to determine championship positions in the event of a tie.

PRO rules means Shift-Rs are not allowed at any time and the damage model is realistic.

Drivers must complete 50% race distance to score.

Available Tokens:
Note: These are the tokens available to each driver before the 10 tokens are added for making the race start.

Wanted to take L33-Climax here but didn't have a setup, so went back to L43-BRM. Would have preferred to take that later in the season at somewhere like Stardust.

Tris was all over me like a rash in the first few laps and I couldn't shake him, with Clive along for the ride in the draft. Once Tris went off, it was a calm drive to the finish.

Hope to join in for more of the races from now on.

Damn!!
After regaining 3rd Position from Fran,
i slided into the loop, avoided the complete spin but came to a stop in a bad angle to the corner.
Half on the cerbs, i pushed the pedal to the metal, engine blob....
Just 3 laps away from 50% Race length..

Grats to just 3 finishers , which was a little sad? Undecided

Iestyn showed his potential pace in quali with his 3ltr monster and it was clear that Tris wanted to stay close in the early laps. I was content to sit in 3rd and get sucked along in the draft until I saw how things were going to pan out. Iestyn's car was obviously slower in the corners than the nimble 2 ltr Brabs and on a couple of occassions I was almost caught out as we all closed up very quickly. I decided to allow a small gap to develop ahead when I saw how closely Tris was pushing for a pass...it could all get very messy if things went wrong.
I had expected Tris to qualify ahead of me ( he usually is quicker in qualifying because I do my runs on race fuel ) so I had geared my car for slipstream.
I'm not sure if Tris had maxed out his ratios, but maybe the strain of being towed along by the 3 ltr car was just too much and his engine expired after a couple of laps. I was tempted to take his place behind Iestyn and apply some pressure, but a) I did not want to risk my engine so early in the race and b) I had dropped back just a little too much when I avoided Tris's stricken car.
Gradually Iestyn pulled away, just as I was dropping the rest of the field behind me and that was how it stayed until the end. My only chance of catching Iestyn would be if he made a mistake or ran short of fuel....both unlikely given his experience. So I had 90% of the race lapping on my own in 2nd place to bring home a Bluemoose 1-2 and that has not happened for a while  Wink Grin

Now David & Fran are mixing it with the Pros it is a bit lonely at the back. I pushed a too hard trying for a 1.09 lap & ended up in the grass a few times. I finally managed to break the reliable Brabham so decided to park up in the pits after 30 laps. Looks like Cookie retired a lap later so I could have held on for 4th.

During my many lonely laps I had the time and I was noticing the various cars dropping. It did occur to me that once we were past half distance there were some tactical retirements happening lol.
