Season 39 – 1968 EARLY – Round 1 –  Kyalami

Welcome to the first full season of the 1968 Early Mod – when racing cars evolved to grow wings. We will be using a selection of tracks from the original 1968 season. For each race drivers will be able to select from a group of 4 cars that have relatively similar performance levels.

There is no handicapping.

For the opening round we start with the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami. The car set is

BRM P261 V12      Brabham BT20
Brabham BT24        Brabham BT23B

Full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please read the season 39 general rules on the championship standings page.

Please read the specific rules for 68 series on the 1968 Early championship standings page.

From the registration thread:

Just a bit of advance warning - in case anybody is practicing.

The cars have been allocated into 4 Groups - see the '68 Early page here https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=1591&theme=6

For Race 1 - Kyalami = Group IV (the slowest group), Race 2 = Group III, Race 3 = Group II & Race 4 = Group I (fastest group) & then repeat for races 5 - 8.

You can use any car within the Group - but for races 5 - 8 use a different car from the group. No handicaps.

Having some good fun in the 4-banger Brabham til DaveR ran short on talent and on the straight directly in front of the pits no less.  Geeezzz...

Resets?  Only for the lame at heart.

The standard of 'driving' I witnessed up to the point of my demise was lamentable on many counts.

Very sorry Doni.
I don't know what I did ... probably some of my neurons were disconnected.
I thought I had enough room to overtake but ...

That was fun squeezing every bit of performance out of the privateer Brab.

It was great to have a full grid. I got a reasonable start, I did loose one place into T1 but I settled down and picked up 2 places due to a couple of drivers applying too much power on cold tyres and spinning out. After that I just had to drive carefully and not make any mistakes, which I managed this time. I couldn't quite get on terms with Ziu and Evil but in my efforts to keep up I just had enough pace to hold off Alain. Another lap and I'm sure he would have caught and passed me.

Grats Magic, Yannick and Uli.  Wink

With a good time at the end of the practice I was in a good position to keep in contact with the leaders but from the start I lost 2 places because I was careful and in addition I was hit at ClubHouseBend in the first lap when it was impossible to overtake at this place especially in the first lap, suddenly still last.
I won't hide from you that I find this very annoying.  Sad

I managed to regain a few places to finish just behind Phil who drove very well.

Thanks for the organization.  Smiley

Great to see a full grid for this new mod and it looked like everyone had tested the cars and decided that the Brab BT24 was the favoured car. Phil was brave with the BRM and respect to Leo. Doni and a couple of others for opting for the less powerful chassis. They will have that in reserve for other tracks, so maybe a cute move ??

Lap 1 was congested and tight but from where I was sitting everyone appeared to be leaving room for each other ( good to see  Wink ) Once the race had settled down I was running in 5th or 6th place and was discovering the limitations of my setup. I could push hard for 1 or 2 laps but then the tyres would creep up in temp and the handling became a little random, so I had to go gently for a lap to recover.
I could see Phil and Ziu behind and Phil did a good job of holding back Ziu for a few laps, but once he was released Ziu started to eat into my lead. I was probably watching Prib more than I should and as a result made a series of small errors that allowed Ziu to close the gap far too quickly.

Once Ziu caught and passed me I half expected him to ease away, but instead I found that I could match his pace. There were a couple of times when I might have pushed to the limit as we braked into T1 and taken the place back, but with so many laps to run I opted for safety. After many laps of close racing Ziu made a mistake and I was just able to squeeze past. By the time Ziu had recovered I had a considerable lead and all I had to do was bring it home to claim 5th.
But in typical old fart fashion I managed to miss braking points, fluff gear changes and generally slow myself down so much that Ziu was able to catch me with 3 laps to go and Phil was getting within striking distance too!!
On the last lap I was preparing for a drag race to the flag, but in trying to squeeze an extra 10kph through the penultimate corner I put a wheel on the grass and that was the end of my challenge, so I cruised over the line in 6th.
Some magic racing with Ziu, finally I feel that the new wheel and pedals are close to where I want them, and my confidence in being able to place the car is coming back.
looking forward to the next round already

The 68e seem to be more difficult to drive than 67 cars, especially fueled.

I was in need of the full road sometimes. Sorry to anyone who's race was affected by me.
