Season 40 – 1968 LATE – Round 2 – Surfers Paradise
Welcome to a new season of the 1968 Mod. A slight change in the format, we will use the 68 Late car set, not the Early. The track selection has a theme. The first 5 races will be held on Tasman series tracks from Australia & New Zealand. The second half of the season will be staged on tracks in the USA.
There is no handicapping but drivers will have a limited choice of chassis for each round. The cars are divided into 5 groups, each group will have cars of similar performance level. We start with Group V and work our way up to Group I and then repeat. Group I is the fastest cars available in Formula 1 for 1968.
The second round takes place on the temporary street circuit on the Surfers Paradise, in Queensland, Australia.
The car set is Group IV. Drivers may use any of the following cars but you will be required to use a different one for Race 7.
Honda RA 302 BRM P126/P133 Brabham BT24
Full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available. Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join. If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.
Please read the season 40 general rules on the details.
Please read the specific rules for 68 series on the 1968 Early championship standings page.

ADVICE ON LAPPING. Some of the tracks in this series are short and narrow. The fastest drivers will be lapping backmarkers, perhaps more than once each race. For this year we have posted a multi-language guide to UKGPL rules on the Announcements page. This includes the etiquette for lapping. In summary the lapped car should remain on the racing line and avoid sudden or unexpected movements. To avoid holding up the lapping car the lapped driver can make way where safe to do so or gradually ease off the acceleration on a straight. Extra care should be taken by second or third lapping cars who may be closely following first lapping car. Unlimited number of Shift-Rs are allowed with no need to make Stop & Go. Drivers are reminded that Lap 1 incidents carry an extra 1 place penalty.

Which car should this be: "BRM P261/P133" ? I can only find: BRM P126/P133, BRM P261 V12 and BRM P261 V8. Do you think it should be BRM P126/P133?

Very strange start.
I pulled away cleanly & was driving in a straight line when the car snapped & veered to the right. I just checked the replay, assuming there had been some minor contact but my car was in clean air. Apologies to Bernie because I collected your car along the way. Perhaps I downshifted instead of upshifted?
I spent the remainder of the race trying to catch the field. Managed to get close to Paul V at one point, promptly ran across a polo and spun out.
Pleased to get into the 1.07's. The late 68 BRM runs very nicely, huge improvement on the 67 model which feels like driving a bag of spanners.

That was a very close race, the top 5 or 6 were nose to tail for most of the race. I managed to keep the leaders in sight for the first half of the race but I think I had too short a second gear and I was tending to over-rev the motor on the twisty bits. The engine went pop about mid race and I had to do a shift-R which meant the leaders were long gone. The rest of the race was spent trying to fend off Bastian. He got within 25m of me at the flag but I held on . Great race from Pete to get P2 and a fine recovery drive from Tris.

I spent the remainder of the race trying to catch the field So did I Lost a place to Fran when I got mobbed by front runners and blue flags and I ran wide trying to keep out of there way , Fran sneaked through on the blind side , I caught back up going into the last lap but his BRM was faster down the finish straight . Good result for the Soggies

Phew. Well happy with tonight. Happily at the back because I couldn't even remember if I had ever driven here.
After a couple of laps it dawned on me we had raced here before. Only joined at 20 past 9. Did 2-3 practice laps and just shortened the gearing a couple clicks, stuffed some air In the tyres add added enough fuel.
And that was that. I'm amazed I even finished. But thoroughly enjoyed the drive in the BRM. As Billy says the 68s are nice cars. And new PB. A decent time for me too.
Sorry to see a few guys getting tangled up early on in the race. I had some good laps with David towards the end of the event but just couldn't catch Bernie, francesco or Evil.. and I was trying as hard as I could. Lol.
Thanks also you fast guys, as always I try to move over ASAP, as its a bit twisty and narrow. Just wanted to say thanks for being nice and sensible when boring down on me from behind.
Very often I'm sad to say (hehe) that you guys seem a little impatient.. but tonight everyone was a total gentleman racer.. cheers.

fun race, but forgot to adjust any wings. So i was not competitive with much fuel in the race. Lost much time when i let pass Tris, just went too wide myself, stupid.
with low fuel i could close up to phil, but it was too late.

I'm more than happy with a 2nd place here This was one of those times where everything drops into place; a perfect track/car/setup combination and just being in the right frame of mind. A really tough battle, especially trying to find a way past Andreas without letting Fulvio through. Nose to tail for many laps. Great fun and great company. Thanks v much. I won R1 of S40 67 Priv at the same track in a BRM a couple of weeks ago. This track (and the BRM) is becoming one of my favourite drives.

Thanks for the fun close racing Bastian, Phil and Fulvio! I was only able to gain positions when others had issues. When Tris caught back up I decided it was better to let him pass and not take a chance of making a mistake resulting in both of us going off. Congrats Tris and Pete! Thanks for the fair racing Fulvio, I know how it is when your vision starts failing.

You're welcome. the worst thing is, when you make the mistake when you try to let pass him too safely, like me. i just run out of road
