Season 41 - SCX67 Cup – Round 1 - Brno 49

For the first race of the 1967 Sports Cars Cup we visit Brno in Czechoslovakia.
The original circuit which dates from 1931 was approximately 18 miles (29 km) of public roads on the outskirts of Brno. The start was located in Bosonohy and it ran in an anti-clockwise direction through Kejbaly, Libusino, Kohouvotice, Žebětín, Ostrovacice and Veselka. The circuit retained this layout until 1937 when war brought racing to a close. In 1949 Brno re-opened and on 25 September 1949, a Grand Prix race was held on the street circuit.  The race was run clockwise on a shorter 11.1 miles (17.8 km) layout, which turned right at Veselka, bypassed Ostrovacice and entered Žebětín from the south rather than the west. In spite of a crowd in excess of 400,000 people, this would be the last Grand Prix for cars on the old street circuit. The race was won by Peter Whitehead a Ferrari 125. Whitehead had several race wins, including the 1938 Australian Grand Prix and the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1951, but he is also notable as the first person to whom Enzo Ferrari ever sold a Formula One car. It is the same car he drove to victory in this race. In fact, the 125 was the first Formula 1 car Ferrari produced ready for the inaugural Formula 1 season in 1950. Numerous changes were made to the street circuit until it was finally closed in 1987 in order to move the racing onto the newly purpose-built race circuit situated just off the original course, between Ostrvacice and Zebetin where the races continue to this day.

Please check the Season 41 details regarding rules and the 1967 Sports Cars Championship pages in particular.
In order to add an element of realism, and to hopefully reduce the possibility of rear-end incidents, the brake light patch will be used  eek

What a great start to the season. I was never going to be quick here but the racing with Clive and Doni was fun. The MK1 Ford is a bit of a handful but I was getting to like it towards the end of the race. My driving was a little scrappy after a summer break and I lost most time by out-braking myself into the cobbled corners giving others the opportunity to pass. I apologise if I blinded anyone with my braek lights. I re-set on Lap 6, after crasing my already broken car, so the last two were driven with a heavy fuel load and cold tyres. Doni, it was a pleasure sharing the tarmac with you and thank you for tolerating my mistakes.

See you all next time.

Third was probably the max result for me today.

I was really lucky not to have a reset this race despite three big shunts.
Most notably at the kink after Zebetin. I rolled a lot of times but somehow managed to be right side up and car still in good function.
.
After recovering I had only Fulvio to worry about, but the Ferrari's pace on the straight was hopeless for me, despite me catching up in the corners.

After surviving two more shunts I had to settle with third after Leo had less luck. Not that happy I didn't get second, but then again, it was probably not going to happen without incidents.
Good news: I got the Mk I out of the way.

Congrats to Greg and Fulvio.

Greg certainly put his stamp on this one.  Great drive, GT!  Fulvio and Yannick scoring podiums with Yannick doing a splendid job in the GT40.  Well done, gys.

That turned into a ripper of a race as first, I jousted with Clive in the Mirage and then later, Pete in the GT40.  There was precious little difference in our performance and it boiled down to gaffes.  I got lucky a couple of times having to spin to miss Clive in the first village and then later, a similar fate to miss Pete.  Only a reset by Pete handcuffed him in the late going.  I managed to hold a tiny lead starting the last lap but a slight tap in the tail spun me at the Veselka hairpin.  Pete was the gentleman here pausing to let me resume with the place and I just managed to hold it for the balance of the final tour to score a welcome P5.  Great stuff!  Smiley
