Moderator's Report

Final moderation report to close off the 1966 series for Season 41.

Server replay time: 0h13m23s

Andreas & Tristan, battling for 2nd place in the race.
Andreas was leading, moving from the outside at the corner to take the racing line. Tristan attempted a pass on the inside. At the point of contact there is overlap between the cars - but only marginal.
Andreas did nothing wrong. He was ahead at turn-in and within his rights to take the racing line.

Tristan was finding it difficult to get past the 3 litre Cooper and makes a speculative lunge up the inside when there was not a realistic opportunity to overtake. As in real life racing, being faster means nothing if you can't make a pass fairly and safely. The responsibility for the incident lies with Tristan.

Season 41 – 1966 F1 Series – Willow Springs

For Round 4 we visit Willow Springs International Motorsports Park. It is located in Willow Springs near Rosamond and Lancaster, California. Willow Springs is a historic race track, in existence more than 60 years. It is the oldest permanent road course in the United States. Construction began in 1952, with the inaugural race held on November 23, 1953. The main track is a challenging 2.5-mile (4.0 km) long road course that is unchanged from its original 1953 configuration. The interesting elevation changes and high average speeds make it a favourite of many road racing drivers.

A driver must cross the start line in order to register the use of a chassis, participation in qualifying is not sufficient.

The tokens system will be used with drivers being awarded tokens for starting the season and for starting each race. Each car will cost a number of tokens per race. Pro standard drivers will receive 10 tokens at the start of the season & a further 10 tokens for each additional start. Amateur drivers will receive 20 tokens at the start of the season and a further 10 tokens for each additional start. Driver ranks can be found at the bottom of this e-mail.

Drivers are reminded that Lap 1 incidents carry an extra 1 place penalty.

Drivers must complete 50% race distance to score.

Unlimited number of Shift-Rs are allowed with no need to make Stop & Go.

Only reported incidents will be moderated.

Please, excepting emergencies, no chat until Session Completed in qualification. No chat in the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Please check Season 41 details regarding rules and the 1966 F1 Privateers Championship pages in particular.

Arf Arf Arf, sorry for my very bad rejoin on track at turn 1

I was out of the track and tried to rejoin it but I couldn't exactly see where it was.
Moreover I had to push the throttle at the maximum to leave the grass ...

At the start I thought I had avoided the mayhem , accelerating away following Albrecht who for whatever reason slowed dramatically causing me to rear end him and then harpoon Rainier . After the dust had settled I found I was unable to reset for ages after the rest had driven off into the sunset . Then followed umpteen laps of racing myself until the leaders began to close on me .
Unfortunately in all the excitement I ran wide at the big loop and rejoined into the path of Mr Evil .  Sorry about that Clive but In my defence I didnt realise how long it would take me to get back on the track and was not in full control , that putty is tricky stuff to navigate through . apart from which I plead insanity .

No problem Bernie....sh*t happens, even in real life racing  Wink
I had a race of 2 halves, although the first few laps were a little wild.

The T1 melee was all happening about 50 mtrs ahead and just as I thought that I had cunningly picked a clear path through I was tagged and spun around. Rejoined and found myself still rolling in the right direction, then at the top of the hill we had another scrapfest and again, just when I thought I was through and clear I was tagged and spun around.  Undecided
Again, I eneded up facing the right direction and with 4 wheels still attached and set off after Bastian and Andreas who had managed to sneak through the wreckage and take the leading places.
I picked them off on consecutive laps and eased into the lead. I was constantly looking at Prib to see where the aliens were and pressed on at 95% gradually extending the gap back to 2nd place. Andreas and Bastian disappeared to be replaced by my teammate Doni in his white whale. So now I had someone riding shotgun for me  Cheesy
Tristan's name appeared behind Doni but it appeared that I was still easing away on each lap, so at half distance all was quite comfortable.

Then, as I had expected the first of the aliens loomed behind Doni and he did a great job in holding Yannick back for a few laps, but eventually Yannick was free and started to eat into my lead  Sad. I had around 900mtrs lead when he started to close and I was pretty confident that I could up my pace a little if he got too close.
Then Bernie happened....... I saw the yellow flags and a car way off to the left of the final curve as I set up the 4 wheel drift around the inside kerb, ready to give it full gas just as I entered the finishing straight. I felt sure that I would be away and gone before Bernie regained the tarmac. Quite how he got his car out of the sand and fired it across the road to appear 10 mtrs in front of me I have no idea, but the impact was heavy and I saw a lot of sky??!!
Fortunately we were allowed a shift/R which worked first time and I was away, but now on cold tyres and a full tank of fuel  Undecided. Plus more than half of my precious lead over Yannick was gone and the last thing I had wanted to do was offer him a target car to chase, but that was exactly what he now had and the gap closed steadily. Once in the slipstream it was inevitable that he would go for the pass at T1.....and after a couple of practice runs Yannick was through.
By now my tyres were up to temp and I found that I was able to match his pace and the bonus of slipstream kept the Brabham on the Fez's tail. There were a couple of moments when Yannick put a wheel on the dirt exiting corners so I figured that at least I was making him work for his 1st place which gave me a little encouragement. Then he pushed it just a little too wide out of T2 and vanished off to the right into the desert.
Not one to refuse a gift I did the gentlemanly thing and pushed on as hard as I could  Grin
Bernie was attempting a repeat of the final corner episode but this time I was ready and took a wider line to pass behind him  Wink Prib showed that I had a reasonable lead and the laps were ticking down until I took my eyes off the road to check the gap back to Yannick as I crested that rise out of the tight section...bad move and I should know better  Angry
I did a Yannick and put a wheel on the grass as I accelerated down the hill ..exit stage right onto the sand! Made a comnplete Horlicks of the recovery and lost more places and then the red mist obscured the braking point for the final corner and I ran wide into the sand AGAIN!!
I was not a happy bunny and was so angry with myself that I quit in disgust rather than Shift/R again.
Grats to the podium and all finishers and to Doni for a great run in the Wazamobile  Grin

Original plan was to hold this round at Laguna Seca. Willow Springs is much more fun. The sweeping curves & elevation changes are like being able to steer a roller coaster.
Lap one was very messy. I think I started 15th, picked my way through a lot of bent metal & temporarily found myself in 5th place. By having fewer excursions to the scenery I was able to finish in a very respectable top 10 place (good by my standards).

Almost certainly, the hardest race I've been in for a long, long time.  Non-stop qualifying laps in an effort to either catch up or stay ahead of the opposition.  I was tired after just six laps.

Yannick scores the win after being as far back as P12.  Bot comes through to take a lucky P2.  A surprise P3 for me considering all the dramas.

Off the grid, I got away nicely to bounce Tom for a place but then got caught up in the T1 melee to fall back to P11 but with assorted spins and offs from the group, found myself in an astonishing P6 by the end of Lap03.  Holding station well, I chased a group just up ahead til an almighty shunt on Lap09 put me up to P2.  Boys!  Boys!  Tsk, tsk...

Clive was way, way up the road and home-free.  It didn't take long for pursuers to close down on me and soon, Yannick was challenging for the second time.  I didn't have much hope of holding him off as he made stabs here and there including a look at an outside pass in T2 on Lap16.  He wisely thought the better of it.  I made him work for it over the next laps til the superior performance of the Ferrari paid dividends with a pass on pit straight to start Lap17.  Far from out of danger, Bob Simpson now was hot on my tail and giving me fits.  Luckily, the extra grunt of the Honda kept me out of the clutches of his much handier Brabham four-banger.  Lap23 and in what I consider a highly optimistic and next-to-desperate pass attempt, Bob made a bid to pass on the outside of T2.  A move that can come good only if all the stars and planets are in perfect alignment, imo.  Losing sight of him in my left-side mirror, I made allowances on my left on the exit but the tail of the Honda swung out slightly under throttle and my LR clipped his RF tyre.  We were both off into the sand with Bob having the misfortune to be turned down-side up and in need of a reset.  I was able to continue with minor damage registered.

Still holding P3, I now had the ever-dangerous Bot pursuing and it wasn't long before he was mounting a challenge.  I expected a nonsense pass attempt and wasn't in the least bit surprised to see him throw it up the inside for a bid at T5 on Lap30.  He overcooked it and skated by my nose to end up in the sand.  Had to chuckle a bit at that.  Bob Simpson was now pasted to my tail and we again resumed our previous battle.  On Lap31, I went slightly wide in T2 and he came up the inside to take the place accelerating away towards T3.  I gassed the Honda hard and came up on his left only to find that he was slamming the door rather sharply.  Lag may have played a role in the collision but for whatever reason, we were both off...again...letting Bot through for P2.  Poor Bernie got caught up in the melee having no chance whatsoever to avoid my Honda.  Sorry, Bernie.  I managed to recover in time to retain P3 to the flag with Bob spinning off on his own exiting T2 on Lap32 but recovering for a P5 placing.

Sorry to see that Clive came to grief after having a great run up front.

Bob seemed rather annoyed with me in post-race chat.  Sorry you feel that way, Bob.  If you feel hard done by, file paperwork.

Quite an eventful race.

Willow Springs also seems a little shorter than it is in my head. I thought it was a power track but it's more balanced than that.

So the start... it all began when Leo and I tangled. From my POV, I got my car about half a car next to his in the braking zone, but he began to turn towards the apex whilst I was still there. I couldn't exactly vanish and as a result we collided, and big chaos ensued.

I dropped down the order outside the top 10, but made way up as incidents happened everywhere, and I could use my power advantage on the straights through several multi-car battles. Due to theb raffic, I had to be patient when trying to pass, so I was generally cautious. Especially Doni in his Japanese whale was not easy to just waltz by. I had only one more incident when Tris in front of me had a collision trying to overtake someone and I had no chance to avoid.

Lasse also had a phenomenal move on me on the outside of T1. We had a good brief battle until he ran wide at the slow left-hander.
Eventually I got through traffic to challenge Evil, who had quite the gap until he had an incident and I overtake him a bit later. Evil briefly got it back after I spun myself out in T2 but was short-lived as he dipped his wheel in the dirt and spun himself.

Afterwards, it was a straightforward drive to the finish line, bar one off track excursion.

A lot of stuff happening this race but I enjoyed it. Well done to Tris and Dono getting on the podium. See you next race!

I found myself chasing Doni with him about two seconds a lap slower than me. He was losing lots of time in the final, first and second turns with the HondaTank. Passing going into T1 wasn’t likely as he had an 8 mph speed advantage there. Passing in the final corner was too dicey since the line there can vary so much for either car. So on lap 23 I got ahead of Doni around the outside of T2. He knew I was there but didn’t seem to realize his exit line was compromised and bumped me off on the exit. The next pass was after he bobbled the exit of T2, 14 laps later. I was very surprised at the optimistic dive into the apex of the next corner which punted me way off track again. I left enough space but we know that lag and warp doesn’t allow for millimeter proximity in online racing. I thought that “play nice” meant something else but I’ll be ready to disregard that advice in future.

I’m sorry that I couldn’t hang around in chat after but had to jump in the car literally 3 minutes after the race finished for an appointment. “File paperwork” is one way to deal with this but I’ll just let Doni think about his behaviour and whether it was justified. In the end I love racing with all drivers and this battle was one if the very best I’ve ever had even though it didn’t turn out the way I wanted.

Thanks Axel Smiley was no problem - but looking already was!
I must confirm Andreas' assumption unfortunately ...
Tristan just pushed me recklessly off the track - even there was enough space!
has nothing to do with fair F1 racing for me
What‘s about KartCraft? In karting this kind of fighting is normal ...
the main thing is that you enjoy it - I do not ...
P3 in practice surprised me Smiley as well as the chaos after the start in T1. After that all was fine, the little red one ran great and until the said Kartracing moment I had a lot of fun.

Not my finest hour. 13 minutes before the race start and I hadn't even installed the track. I couldn't concentrate but at least I crawled to the end.
