Lap 1 L’Eau Rouge – Enrique Farina and Philippe Girard

Enrique, who is on the left side of the grid, gets a lot of wheelspin off the line which pitches him sideways and he slews a little left with a couple of wheels ending up off the track. He comes off the throttle, recovers the car and starts to accelerate away again. Philippe, who is on the right side of the grid one place behind, makes a perfect start and is ahead (about 3 metres clear) of Enrique (replay time 0h0m51s) as they accelerate past the end of the pit stalls. At this point Philippe cannot see Enrique in his mirrors but Enrique can just see Philippe’s Brabham. Enrique’s Honda picks up speed and as they approach L’Eau Rouge the gap has shrunk. By the time they get to “turn in” (replay time 0h0m53s), the cars overlap by about 30%. Philippe takes the racing line but Enrique is on the inside and contact is made between Philippe’s rear wheel and Enrique’s nose. Both cars spin and crash out of the race. No other cars are involved thanks in no small part to some brilliant driving by Bob Whitwell who managed to slow down avoiding the spinning cars whilst not swerving into the path of the other drivers.

Having made a bad start, Enrique should have expected to have been under pressure from other drivers. It is perfectly acceptable to try to overtake at the start, in fact waiting for a slower car ahead is more likely to precipitate an incident as unsighted drivers behind continue to accelerate. So having recovered, but seen Philippe’s car alongside, Enrique could have played safe and conceded the place. By maintaining his position, he was relying on Philippe leaving enough room to ensure contact was avoided.

Philippe had made a successful pass and was ahead of Enrique but at no point could he be sure of that because Enrique’s Honda never appeared in his mirrors at any point. So on entering L’Eau Rouge, Philippe could have stayed right giving Enrique more room in the anticipation that he would be there.

It would not be appropriate to level the blame for this incident on any one driver. Both drivers could have done something to avoid contact. But this is racing not a Sunday afternoon drive and sometimes incidents happen.

I've seen the competition for this year so I'm going to take the BRM as I don't stand a chance. I have just two goals today; finish and NOT in last place. If I beat my PB then that's a bonus. That'll do me.

See you all later gents; it's good to be back.  Grin

I think I'm more of a contender for the Wooden Spoon than you are Pete. But like you I'll be taking the BRM. The Eagle is the car to have but I'd need rocket boosters strapped to it to have any chance here. I like the track but if I push too hard it bites. It is quite a while since we raced the 67f1s here but looking at the lap times from previous rounds I'm going to have to improve my PB by several seconds just to hang onto the pack.

All going well in P4 on Lap 4 and then I threw it all away at the Masta Kink. Oh well!

Not a great start but already looking forward to the next one. Failed on two of my goals but I did get a BRM PB.

Something strange happened to Leo during the race, he was dropped from the Pribluda Leader board and consequently the HTML export. I checked the replay and I confirmed Leo finished in P3 so I reinstated him in the HTML export so that I could import the results. Hopefully that answers the questions that were being asked in chat after the race.

Had a great race with Pete, JonnyO and Fulvio. I tried hard to fend off Killer who had started at the back but I just didn't have the speed to stay ahead. I thought I'd secured 5th place but Fulvio reeled me in on the last lap and I had no answer to the power of the V12 Ferrari. Close clean racing and great fun  Grin

in spa, never you can try to overtake in 1 turn phillipe, we need to respect the line and after 3 o 4 laps try to overtake, is not my fault, but just wait the marschals check the action and if my fault I say sorry,

I know the rule, enrique. I stayed well on my trajectory from the start. Your honda being slow at the start, I judged that I could accelerate, STAYING ON MY LINE. Arriving at the first corner, my brabham completely overtook your honda, you should have taken this into account. You wanted at all costs to regain your position, and obviously, as I was in front, it resulted in a spin.

Right after crossing the finish line, I drove my car in to the area behind the pits. Think I was then DQ for driving backwards "on track". Lesson learned.

If you go over the finish line after the race end and then drive back over the finish line, you actually undo the lap you just did. Not sure if that's what happened here though?

Well...  Walking away from Spa alive is an accomplishment in and of itself.  To come home with a tasty P2 is just icing on the cake.  Smiley

Greg picking up where he left off with S41 by putting on a clinic in the Eagle and scoring a dominant win.  Top marks there, GT.

Leo a good P3 in the Red Ball Special and fully deserved of that place no matter what GPL thinks.  Quite properly reinstated to that podium placing.

Sorry to see that there was a tangle at Eau Rouge on Lap01.  Dear me...  So often the case.  I just knew that something went horribly wrong there as almost immediately, there was nobody in my mirrors.

I spent several laps tagging along with Leo at a discrete distance but was astonished at how much faster my little Brabham was through Burnenville.  I could gain a ton of time and distance there.  That paid dividends on Lap04 by being close enough along the Masta to get a good pass through the Kink and pull alongside and marginally ahead in time for the dash into Stavelot.  I was able to pull away slowly but consistently to build a smallish gap.  That grew with each lap but Leo was never out of the running.  Only in the last couple of laps did I feel safe enough to ease back the pace slightly in favour of snagging the runner-up slot.

All-in-all, a great start to S42!  Smiley

Since Spa67 was launched, I have been fascinated by this track. But I have never been able to finish a race on it. And most of the time in the "silly" corners like Les Combes (although I think I was the silly one). As I was almost sure I was going to finish this race badly, I chose a cheap car so I wouldn't regret it at the end. Anyway I was determined to finish, so I took the start calmly, when Frank and Alex appeared in my mirrors honking, I moved aside and they passed me without problems. From then on I just kept my concentration, and the only dramatic moment was when Phillipe lost the car at the exit of La Carriere and crossed the track in front of me, he was a passenger in his Honda and I braked with both feet. Congratulations to the podium, and commiserations to those who dropped out. See you next time.

Despite the fact that I started a little slow, I saw in my rearview mirrors that we were coming side by side, and at the entrance to eau rouge it is a very risky maneuver, since it is very soapy and extremely narrow, seeing that you were very close On my side, I braked to enter as closed as possible, but it was impossible for me to avoid the blow, since as I said before it is a very narrow and soapy entrance, I think that overtaking at that point is a suicidal act despite the fact that it starts slower , there is not enough distance for the two of us to enter, in short, I already sent the report to the judges and they decide, there may be both yours and mine, so if I get penalized I will accept the punishment.
