Lap 1 L’Eau Rouge – Enrique Farina and Philippe Girard

Enrique, who is on the left side of the grid, gets a lot of wheelspin off the line which pitches him sideways and he slews a little left with a couple of wheels ending up off the track. He comes off the throttle, recovers the car and starts to accelerate away again. Philippe, who is on the right side of the grid one place behind, makes a perfect start and is ahead (about 3 metres clear) of Enrique (replay time 0h0m51s) as they accelerate past the end of the pit stalls. At this point Philippe cannot see Enrique in his mirrors but Enrique can just see Philippe’s Brabham. Enrique’s Honda picks up speed and as they approach L’Eau Rouge the gap has shrunk. By the time they get to “turn in” (replay time 0h0m53s), the cars overlap by about 30%. Philippe takes the racing line but Enrique is on the inside and contact is made between Philippe’s rear wheel and Enrique’s nose. Both cars spin and crash out of the race. No other cars are involved thanks in no small part to some brilliant driving by Bob Whitwell who managed to slow down avoiding the spinning cars whilst not swerving into the path of the other drivers.

Having made a bad start, Enrique should have expected to have been under pressure from other drivers. It is perfectly acceptable to try to overtake at the start, in fact waiting for a slower car ahead is more likely to precipitate an incident as unsighted drivers behind continue to accelerate. So having recovered, but seen Philippe’s car alongside, Enrique could have played safe and conceded the place. By maintaining his position, he was relying on Philippe leaving enough room to ensure contact was avoided.

Philippe had made a successful pass and was ahead of Enrique but at no point could he be sure of that because Enrique’s Honda never appeared in his mirrors at any point. So on entering L’Eau Rouge, Philippe could have stayed right giving Enrique more room in the anticipation that he would be there.

It would not be appropriate to level the blame for this incident on any one driver. Both drivers could have done something to avoid contact. But this is racing not a Sunday afternoon drive and sometimes incidents happen.

You're right, it's my fault.
it does not matter.
The next races, I have 2 solutions, either I turn into an alien to start in front, or I start dead last on the grid.
I think I made my choice.
I'm new to the works, so I'll drive wisely.
I will be able to enjoy your company on the track longer, and finish my races...

Congrats Doni and Leo! Great job guys!

It worked this time! I´ve been wanting to do a good Dan Gurney impersonation since this track was released. I had abandoned the idea of driving the Eagle here after I had two screen freezes in it. Both times that happened was around lap 5 at Eau Rouge, once in a solid P3 and the second time while leading. None of the other cars ever gave me that problem. The track gap freeze patch seems to have corrected a problem I had. Smiley

I did a few things I´ve been wanting to do in GPL. I finished and won in the Eagle. I got my win for this season and I drove a good race with it. I was tempted to take the Brabham or Honda when I saw so many in the ¨cheaper¨ cars. I could have done very well with either of those cars.

I improved my fastest lap by less than 0.01 seconds. I probably shouldn´t have done that since I risked an engine failure to do it.

I have a good setup since I spent a good amount of time working on it when the track was new. And I tend to forget that some tracks I can show some decent strength and this is one of them.

I almost lost it into Holowell on lap 1. That would have destroyed the car. And lap 2 was a lousy lap and I had another moment on that lap that easily would have destroyed it. Tristan was out soon after that so I was able to be a little more cautious. I think I was cautious into Blanchimont on every lap. It was smooth sailing after that except for over heating my LF tire near the midpoint of the race. I finished this race 3 seconds faster than the race I chased Leon  in his Eagle while in my Lotus. I drove that race much harder than this one.

I´m probably going to regret all the tokens I spent here. It´s going to put me at a real disadvantage at some point in the season.

Thanks for the fun gentlemen. I appreciate you letting me race with you.

Poor start to the season for me.  Only a couple praccy laps just before the race saw me in the BRM, threw it away L1 towards the end of the lap, sry to Syd who's race was ended by my literally flying BRM.

See you next time, tks for hosting,

Bob

At some point in my LPG life I had the attitude of penalizing myself, starting last in the next race after having an incident with someone.
I'm not saying phillipe that it's your fault, maybe I was also at fault, unfortunately the angle of vision of this simmer is very zero and it's difficult to save an accident.
It is not necessary for you to blame yourself or to come out last, in our years running together this is the first time we have had contact and we are on the margin of having it.
Many more races are coming and it is possible that we will start in several of them, very close together, you just have to try not to risk too much in any maneuver and I say this for both of us, not only for you and try to find the exact point for an overtake,
I send you a big hug my dear opponent and we will continue to see you on the track, maybe sometime we will have a whiskey and laugh at these situations Wink
