Moderator's Report

Summary
A win for Eric and a fine second place for Mikos. Pepe completed the podium in his Ferrari.

Server replay time: 0h01m02s

Lap 1 Curva Grande – Bernie Darwin and Eric Bilodeau
Bernie is behind Eric on the grid but he gets a better start and pulls alongside on the run down to Curva Grande. Bernie has the inside line but he is cautious and backs off to allow Eric to maintain the racing line. Eric cuts across Bernie in an effort to stay ahead but he unsettles the car and he scrubs off a lot of speed trying to maintain control. Bernie tries to back off but contact is made and he spins out. Eric ends up railriding the armco barrier. Both drivers could continue.

Bernie did nothing wrong but arguably he could have anticipated Eric’s move and backed out earlier in order to avoid the risk of contact. Bernie tried to brake but genuine contact was made. There was evidence of the crash boxes overlapping on the server replay so both cars would have been affected by the contact. If there had been no overlap of the crash boxes on the server but there was overlap on one of the client replays, then one could assume warp was a factor. However, in this case warp did not play a major role in the outcome.

Eric appears to try to shut the door on Bernie by moving to the inside line rather than staying on the faster racing line. It was this sudden movement and a clip of the inside kerb that caused Eric to lose control and slow appreciably. Eric should have maintained the racing line, or better still, stayed wide in order to give Bernie room, he would still have maintained his lead. However, it would be harsh to blame Eric for a lack of car control.

Season 43 – 1967 F1 – Round 1 – Privateers  - Monza1967
The first round of the Season 43 takes us to Monza in Italy. The Autodromo Nazionale Monza is a race track located near the city of Monza, north of Milan.  Built in the Royal Villa of Monza park in a woodland setting, the circuit has gone through numerous changes over the years.  Perhaps the most striking feature in the park is the steep banked (sopraelevata) curves on the now defunct 10Km variant, first used in 1955.  The original circuit (used between 1922 and 1933) also had an oval section but the banked curves were not as wide or as steep as the later 1955 variant.  The banked circuit was used on four occasions for Formula 1 races; in 1955, 1956, 1960 and finally in 1961 when it was decided that Formula 1 cars were just too fast to be safe on the oval track.   The banked oval section was last used in any capacity in 1969.  From 1962 onwards, the Formula 1 Grand Prix was held on the "road circuit" which by the early 1970s was also deemed to be too fast for Formula 1 cars.  Two chicanes were introduced for 1972 Italian Grand Prix, one at the Ascari curve and another on the approach to the Curva Grande..

I was not expecting to make 50% distance, so was not going to splash all my tokens on the opening round.
However, in the event - the Honda & I were getting on ok!

According to GPLRANK (it's back!) practice time was improved by 1.5 seconds & submitted a new race time for monza67  (must be true, as I did not have a setup with race fuel!).

Pepe gave me quite the workout for most of the race.   A couple of times, I felt that could have just squeezed ahead into one of the tricky braking areas - but I was happy enough to hold station & secure a safe 4th rather than risk a mistake/misunderstanding  & unpleasantness.

I was starting to doubt whether the promised uncontested overtake would actually be forthcoming Smiley

Congrats up front/podium.  Turned out to be quite enjoyable.

Congrats Podium! I enjoyed the challenge of keeping up with the pack, and trying to finish 31 laps with no resets. Ultimately, I made an errant downshift and my engine exploded just after halfway. When my race ended, I watched three different battles on track. It was very close to the finish.

Regarding lap one, turn one, my condolences to the unlucky drivers. I started to slow down at the first sign of trouble. I was not able to completely avoid it. I was a little bit more lucky because I started further back.

I had two setups I'd been practicing with during the week. One I'd gotten from Rob Fleurke. It was predictably fast (even with major modifications I made to calm it down) but scary under hard braking (e.g., entrance to Parabolica). I used that to qualify (5th) with a 1:31.xx. There were seven cars in that one-minute bracket. The other setup was based on Ferdinand Schultze's model, stable but maybe a half-second slower than Rob's. I decided it was better to be safe than sorry, so I used that for the race.

It was immediately apparent that being safe might end up making me sorry anyway. Dave Curtis found a home behind me right off the bat and I could.not.shake.him. Every now and then some fast guy would come along and sit behind me for 100 yards, but then he'd overtake and there was Dave again, pounding that whale for all it was worth. On L14 he finally started tailing me as closely as he could. We spent the remainder of the race not a single second apart. There was only one thing I could do, and that was to make the back end of my Ferrari about as wide as an aircraft carrier. Any mistake of mine, no matter how trivial, would let him by. Neither of us made one. I crossed the finish line 0.13 seconds ahead of him. This isn't the first time he's clawed me like an angry cat, but it was the longest session by many miles. I'm going to take a shower now and wash off the blood off. I don't think I'll need any stitches, but if I do, I'm sending him the medical bill.

I almost forgot: Both of our fastest laps came on the last one. I told you he wasn't giving up.

Oh, rats and lice! I forgot about my promise, Dave! I truly did. The very next time I see you in my mirrors, just tell me which side you want and I'll let you by.  Smiley

We're using the pro damage model, Walter. You can SHFT-R all you want but it won't reset except in your shattered dreams.  Smiley

After the Lap1 dust had settled I found myself lapping at the same pace as Dave' Brabham , unfortunately Dave was 6 secs or so ahead of me , I tried hard to close the gap but he matched my pace lap after lap . Had a short race with Hallo's Eagle until he drafted past and into the distance only to find him coasting to the line ( blown engine perhaps )

Was glad to finish P6 from dead last after the Lap 1 goings on which I think need some investigation .

Think I will be submitting a report , not seen the replay yet but think I will be involved in the mods report  Shocked

OK looked at my replay and a rear end collision with Bilodeau which I thought was my bad and had at the time also resulted in the pile up further behind but it seems that was a separate incident .

My replay shows warp contact was the major player but I will submit my report and leave any deciding factors to the wise men of UKGPL

Grats to the podium boys , better luck next time to those who didn't  see the chequered  Smiley

I did save the replay bur cant find it yet on my hdd
If you have a default installation, it should be in:
C:\sierra\GPL\replays

But if you have a lot of replays in there it can be difficult to find the right one. You need to look at the dates.

The easiest way to check if you have actually saved the replay is to use the filters in GPL to only list the Monza67 replays.

Everybody knows there are ALWAYS this kind of start at Monza (look at the Works race, it happened too).
Like you, I was starting at the end of the grid to avoid any accident and not be rearended. It works for me, even if I lost several seconds, but it seems not for you ...
I have to look at the replay.

Lord Jesus what a terrible start to the season. The qualification was still really good for the fact that I haven`t raced in 6 years. Ok I rammed one time someone in front of the Pitlane, sorry for that. But the Race was really bad. I start from second row right outside and slide very strong so I lost some positions. I think ok now a have Space to line up left before the first corner is comming and than....BUUUMMM....accident directly in front of mine. No Chance to drive past so I land on the Roof. Race is over for me. Finish.
I hope next time it will be better.
Greetings Kai

Pepe could you give me the ramp angle used by you?My Ferrari was not so fast in the top speed.

I used basically the Ferdinand Schultze (http://www.ferdinandschulze.de/gpl_setup_ferdi.html) setup, but changed the ramp angles from 80/35 to 60/45. I don't know why I did that. I would have bet two rooms of my house that I had used his ramp angles, which are always 85/30. The other settings were 120/60 roll bar, 53% FBB, 9/31 diff ratio, a top gear of 3.936:1, and three clutches.

The setting I used in qualifying was from Rob Fleurke, highly modified but still always an adventure in braking for Parabolica. It was half a second or more faster than Schultze's setup but I was more interested in finishing than in making a statement.
