Season 43 – 1967 F1 – Round 2 – Works - Ain Diab For the 2nd round in the 1967 Grand Prix series we sail across the Mediterranean to Morocco. The Moroccan Grand Prix was held on four different circuits between 1925 and 1958. Apart from Agadir, all the circuits are in the Casablanca area. The 1958 Moroccan Grand Prix was held on the Ain-Diab circuit which, in part, ran along a stretch of coastline know as La Corniche. The race was famous for deciding the 1958 world championship. Stirling Moss, in a Vanwall, needed to win the race with Mike Hawthorn, driving a Ferrari, finishing no higher than third. Moss did everything he could, winning the race and setting the fastest lap but he needed his teammates, Tony Brooks and Stuart Lewis-Evans, to finish ahead of Hawthorn. But it wasn’t to be, both Brooks and Lewis-Evans suffered engine seizures and were out of the race. Phil Hill, Hawthorn’s teammate, moved over to allow Mike Hawthorn to take second place and with it the world championship by a single point. Brooks walked away from his Vanwall but Stuart Lewis-Evans was not so lucky. His car spun off the road, burst into flames and although he climbed out, but Lewis-Evans was very badly burned. Tragically Stuart Lewis-Evans died from his injuries eight days later. Devastated, Tony Vandervell closed his team. Vanwall had just won the first ever Constructors' Formula 1 Championship but they would never race again.
Track Limits. For the purposes of moderating, the track boundary will be the outer edge of the gravel "shoulder". So the desert is outside the track boundary, the gravel is inside the track boundary. Drivers should keep 2 wheels inside the track boundary (i.e. on the gravel) at all times. However, the gravel is a bit slippery so the fastest line will probably be to keep 2 wheels on the tarmac.

Yes very narrow track ! It's something like Monaco but without concrete wall. The start will be very harsh with a 90° turn after the straight ... More difficult than Curva Grande so everybody should be very cautious !

I wonder why some of them are not more sensible when it comes to the initial laps? A pity, all the training and the race ruined.

Congratulations Tristan and Doni! Axel must have forgot that you can't afford many mistakes when Doni is near.
This was my first race at Ain-Diab. An hour before qualifying I took one of my newest Honda setups (Kyalami) and modified it slightly for this track. It worked well except I had to make sure I didn't brake a little late. With two long stretches at full throttle I thought the Honda might be good here. I like the track and it looks nice.
I wondered at times if Tristan was toying with me. He let me stay closer than I thought I could. I pushed the engine more than I wanted. I usually try to shift at 11,000 rpms but I was close enough to want to go faster. I shifted a lot at 11,100 rpms. The Honda engine has never failed me as long as I keep the rpms at or under 11,000.
I thought I might have fast lap with 2:08.84 but Tristan got me there too. I would have been about 2 seconds behind at the finish if I had not tried to take one of the last turns at a higher speed than usual. I am very pleased the Honda did so well.
Thanks for the gun gentlemen, see you next time.

I had well managed my safety distance of ~10sec to Doni - most driver were well cooperating when lapped, others not in last lap...

A very scrappy race for me. I started well, managing to keep Doni in view until I pushed too hard and ran wide, losing two positions to Claudio and Bob. Later on in the same lap (lap 3) I got caught up in an accident. The track is so narrow, there is virtually no room to squeeze past any stricken cars so the inevitable happened and I was punted from behind as everyone else tried to avoid the carnage. This damaged my engine and suspension (as confirmed by the GPLRA Mechanical Report). I also had to wait for the whole field to pass by before a safe opportunity to re-join was presented and I could try to dislodge myself from Dulima's BRM (sorry my friend, you didn't deserve to get stuck like that). So the rest of the race was damage limitation. It didn't stop me running wide another couple of times as I tried in vain to make up for lost time. Grats to the podium. This is a bit of a marmite track (some love it some hate it). I quite liked it. It sorts out the men from the boys (I'm clearly one of the boys) by punishing mistakes without ending your race. As Works drivers we should be able to stay on the tarmac here (clearly I can't )

I went to the race very discouraged, I couldn't believe that we would have a race of 67 on this narrow track, ideal for 55. But advance judgments always end up wrong. Only after halfway through the race did I start to like the track for the 67! Now look! Well, my idea was to try to stay alone on the track, because I had problems with low FPS in some corners. That's impressive, this track isn't even 100% finished and has heavy sectors, I have no problem with Isle of Man, Targa, Dundrod........ I can't understand. In the race my friend Doni came close and didn't want to make it difficult, twice, it wouldn't be a good idea to hold him back with fps problems in some corners, the plan was to be alone as best as possible. In the end, a 5th was a good size. Greg's pace on the Honda is impressive. And congratulations to Tristan on the win!!!! And Doni on the podium! Axel, I wish you better luck next time!

A lucky podium indeed! Poor Axel. That last lap was nothing short of gruesome.
Only scored this one 2/5 over at GPLWeekly as it was not a drive to be proud of. Too many '64' laps. Jonny was very thoughtful in giving me a wave-by early on. Thanks, amigo. A foolish spin on Lap07 when I was checking my mirrors looking for Jonny. This got me miles off track not once but twice and cost me about 15 seconds. As well, in regaining the roadway, I took away Ricky's line and we collided. Sorry, my bad.
I settled down after this and Jonny once again let me pass for place. On the last lap, I came across a Honda foundering in the sand after T1. Didn't know whom this was but thought it highly unlikely for it to be Axel. Golly G! It was. Twenty seconds lost and a podium to boot. Dear me... On that last lap, I caught Phil half way 'round and had a devil of time to pass. This track is just too, too narrow. PT very kindly checked up to let me by cleanly. Thanks
Nice job by Greg to score P2 in the Red Ball Special. Some good finishes down the order with Jonny in P5, Bobbie_B in P6, Bob in P7 and Syd in P8.

Hi all
Well done Tristan, Greg and Dony.
New circuit and without training. The race promises to be difficult and I am last at the first turn because I have to be careful. I manage to gain a few places following various withdrawals but I am not confident. The track is not wide and that bothers me. I manage to finish, that's already good.
Thank you to everyone and to the organization.

Good result for me. I stayed out of trouble, until around 5-6 laps to go. Than had a multiple off lap, losing 20 seconds and 7th place. Then, soon after getting lapped I ran across a spinning car. I thought it was one of the leaders and I slowed down to not pass them. Only a few corners later I figured out it was actually Baab. Still, a good race and solid points in the BRM. Grats podium.

I wonder why some of them are not more sensible when it comes to the initial laps? A pity, all the training and the race ruined. Sorry for taking you out Claudio and causing the carnage on L3 was it? It can happen but indeed you should expect more of a Works driver. My race was full of incidents and at one point I realized my wheel was loose (think that was whilst I slide across the plains seemingly forever). Nevertheless I had plenty of other issues once the wheel was secured. I was going to take the Eagle but at the last minute opted for the BRM because I wasn't getting on very well with the circuit (also had low frame rates in several places, anyone else suffer with that?) it's obviously not that fast but I found a reasonable setup and it seemed to handle pretty nice. Pace was alright, consistency wasn't. I was slow off the line and let a couple cars pass unchallenged as I cautiously approached T1. Pleased (if amazed) we all made it round. With all the incidents I thought I was fighting over last spot but from the results I see there were a few other runners behind me. Cheeers for the orga & see you next time, Bob
