Season 43 - Mixed Open Wheel Round 2 : 1966F1 Blandford CampWelcome to the first official race at Blandford Camp. On 25 July 1948, the 3 miles 247 yards (5.05 km) perimeter road around the camp was used to form the UK's first post-war road racing circuit. Around 10,000 spectators attended the first event, a motorcycle race, and the lap record was set by Bob Foster at just over 85 mph (137 km/h). By the time of the third event in April 1949, the circuit had obtained a reputation as the fastest in the country, with speeds over 110 mph being achieved down the straights and sidecars were raced at the circuit for the first time at the fourth motorcycle meeting in August. Pro Drivers are reminded that they may NOT choose any car from Groups 7,8, or 9. Please follow the link below to the Championship pages for more details. There is no need to declare your GROUP until after YOUR FIRST race. A list of PRO and AMATEUR drivers will appear here soon.

Not an easy track. Turn 1 could be a carnage at the start ...hopefully resets are unlimited Straw bales are hard as concrete ! Turn exits and one turn entry too are very tricky ! Good luck

Welcome to Dorset where the hay bales are packed with manure and mud to make them hard. In real life the track was narrower and the kerbs almost 12 inches high in places. T1 had a more vicious positive camber and the track was a LOT more bumpy. So, before you right this track off for being hard, please thank the nice track builder for making such a GPL friendly version of Blandford. We had some test races over the summer break in which Cuckoo and Anson were negotiated very cleanly. My advice would be to brake earlier than expected for T1. The racing groove was provided by Robert Fleurke who clearly brakes later than us mere mortals. Have fun.

As Pete says: do not overshoot the brakepoints in the narrower corners - go the other way and get the right point by early braking

Needed a little lot more practice. Too easy too overcook it on the entry to several corners. Managed 20 laps on track but went for on an early exit when I started making mistakes.

I got a good start and picked up a couple of places off the line. I was mugged by Will after a couple of laps when I lost momentum trying to get round his dad. Anyway after following (the much improved) Will for a couple of laps I got past thanks to him spinning. After that I just had to settle down and try to finish in P4 by keeping Andreas at bay (he was catching me very slowly). There was no way I was going to catch the leading pack, they were way too fast. The plan was working well until I encountered one of Pete's magnetic concrete straw bales. I knew I'd made a mistake and got the line wrong at Valley Bend but I couldn't take my eyes off that bloody straw bale and wham, I hit it dead square. I had to wait for several cars to pass before taking my shift-R. After that it was an uneventful drive to the line. Grats to Tris on the win, Uli for P3 and to Evil for a brilliant P2 in the McLaren. That must make the hassles with the graphics driver worth the effort

Some great racing last night and the part that I really enjoyed was the 3 way battle for the podium places in 3 totally different cars. I have driven the 2.5ltr Brab in other races before and I knew that In Tris's hands it would be quick. Uli had the mighty Honda with all that spare BHP, so he was going to be fast around the long sweep around the back of the circuit. TBH I think this might be my first ever race in the McLaren and it took me a while in Qualifying to find a quick way through the slow corners. The lack of grunt meant that it was too easy to just bog down and feel like the car had stopped. It was a very fine balance between just right or overcooked and into the scenery. Most of the time I got it right, but sadly there were 3 incidents which cost me a shot at the win and allowed Tris to escape. Some of you will remember Hristo Itchov who often raced with the McLaren and found the pace to beat everyone else with it. At the time I could not see how on earth he did that, but I think I found the sweet spot at Blandford and the car actually handles like a dream ( setup available if anyone wants to try?). The lack of too much torque means that it is soooo docile in the corners and can be gently steered on the throttle through those critical fast corners with slight power oversteer. Yes Phil, that race was a welcome lift after the cr*p of recent days. Commiserations to Uli who maybe made one more mistake than me and lost a shot at 1st or 2nd? and apologies for my rejoin at T2 and up the hill. I think I got back onto the circuit cleanly but the lack of power in the McLaren just would not let me build up any speed and I think you had to take avoiding action? And of course thanks to Pete for producing another masterpiece of a circuit. An absolute joy and challenge to drive quickly and stunning graphics too.

Dear me... This race wasn't any more the 10 seconds old when it all turned to shite.
Set a reasonable lap in Q to start P8 directly behind Will. Off the grid, he faltered and I swung right to clear him to find myself looking at the tail of Andreas' Cooper. On my right, Phil got a blinder of a start in his McLaren to surge up on the right of Andreas and I'm thinking that this act may have spooked Andreas a bit into backing off way, way early for T1. The result was that I butt-pounded him a ton and we were both off the road big time. Upshot of this was falling to dead last. Sigh... Sorry for the biff, AG.
Bouncing back from this, I chased Andreas and over several laps, was amazed to see my progress up the order. To be sure, I saw many a faller in those few laps and if this kept up, I'd be on the podium! LOL! By mid-race, there wasn't much between AG and me so P5 was definitely up for grabs. We had Fulvio some distance back and seemingly, not a factor. With 10 laps to run, Fulvio had gone from a distant threat to a full-blown challenge as he was now full in my mirrors. I was the meat in a Cooper sandwich between Andreas and Fulvio. Starting Lap25, there was barely one second covering the three of us. I got a swell run up the hill through Valley and went for the pass on the right of Andreas going into Anson. I had noted for many laps that I seemed to be able to go in there significantly deeper on the brakes than AG so now was my chance. Andreas let me by and it was up to P4. WOOHOO! Gassing it away from Anson, I held a decent margin...defined here as four car-lengths...to finish the lap and dive into Hood. This corner is crucial to good lap in the Eagle/Weslake. The V-12 engine has been properly detailed with a narrow power band and not enough torque to pull the skin off a tapioca pudding should you let the R's fall below 7000. All previous 24 passes through here were according to script but now, to finish Lap25, it all went sour. Turned in a fraction of a second too late, missed the apex, skated wide onto the grass, had to soft-pedal it to regain the roadway and, of course, both Andreas and Fulvio had scampered by doubtless having a good chuckle at my expense. Grrr... Planting the throttle to the floor, I was determined to stay close and retake those positions but within 1000 metres, the engine gave out. Sigh... Despite this disappointment and the Lap01 collision, it was a fun race on a truly great circuit.
Sorry to see some notable fallers along the way including Axel and Pete. Good job by Clive for P2 and Uli for P3. Fulvio pipped Andreas for P4 in the closing stages.

WOW - the Honda is really fast, unfortunately not on the brakes. Yesterday I made three mistakes too much, so I lost my chance of winning. When I passed Tris, I had a highspeed spun and although I was able to catch up with Clive by 1 km, I spun twice after I had passed him. ? Great compliments to the lapped riders, especially to Dave (R), that was great timing in the difficult last corner ! Many thanks. Congratulations to Tris for his consistent riding and a well deserved win and congratulations to Clive for 2nd place, as you wrote I made more mistakes.... But I enjoyed the race, the fights and my speed so much that I will try to be there again next time.

Honestly, 8 months to build a track, only to stack it on L3 (or was it L2?) Never mind, it was fun, and that is the main reason for building them.
I had a good start in my M2B despite these cars feeling quite sluggish from a standing start. Relieved that there was no pile up into T1, I focused on tricky Valley section before braking hard on cold tyres into Anson. Phew, a good clean drive by everyone around me so I had my foot to the floor for the fast open section of the track. Tyres warming up nicely and I could feel confident as I started lap2. All to no avail, I out-broke myself going into ANson and got stuck in the haybales. Yes, you would have seen me if you were P5 or lower as you ALL came past to take a good look. I waited and waited until the track was clear in Prib but... Oh no! Time up! I got booted back to the pits. I thought that by rocking backwards and forwards in 1st and reverse would have been enough to stop the GPL countdown timer from activating but evidently not. Never mind.
I spent the rest of the race onboard with Will as I watched from his viewpoint. He had a great battle with the two Daves. So, he's gloating that he's 6th in the Championship and I'm ten places behind him. Still, a long way to go in the series which I'm pleased to say is providing everyone with much entertainment. As far as I am aware, nobody suffered a CTD so the track is looking pretty solid. Next time I'll try to stick around for more laps.
Congrats to the Pods with some mightily impressive drives and laptimes. Great to see Clive back after his PC woes.

Groups
Everyone chose a correct car from their selected group. All I need to do now is confirm a couple of things...
Fulvio, do you want GROUP 4 or 5? Paul, your group is now set as 7
Thanks
