Lap 4 - Courbe de Gueux – Francesco Molteni and Syd Drake
Francesco is leading Syd down the finishing straight. Syd pulls out from the slipstream and takes the inside line into Courbe de Gueux. The cars are side by side and contact is made. Syd is unaffected and could carry on, but Francesco spins out. Francesco can continue without apparent damage, but he loses a lot of time.

Syd had over 50% overlap at turn-in so this was a valid overtaking attempt and he remained on his own side of the track. He did drift a little left, but at no point did he cross the centreline.

Francesco tried to squeeze Syd rather than give him racing room. He straddled the centreline and hence contact was made. It is always risky to hold the outside line. Warp always favours the car in the inside. So it would have been sensible for Francesco to maintain a wide line and possibly concede the place rather than try to defend the position at all costs.

Syd did nothing wrong but to blame Francesco would be rather harsh. Technically it was Francesco that moved across, but the transgression was so minor this contact should be classed as a racing incident.

However, Francesco’s subsequent rejoin was very bad. He drove directly onto the racing line rather than staying off the racing line until he was up to racing speed. Consequently, Moises Pereira could not avoid contact with Francesco’s car and he unfortunately crashed out of the race. This was clearly Francesco’s fault but the rejoin is effectively a separate incident was not reported so he will not be penalised.

Season 43 - 1955GP - Round 5 – Reims

The fifth race in the 1955 Grand Prix series finds us at Reims in France.  The circuit is basically several long straights with a couple of hairpins and a few cornfields. Catching a tow is what this track is about. It normally produces close racing. Reims-Gueux was first established in 1926 on the public roads between the small French villages of Thillois and Gueux. The circuit had two very long straights between the towns, and teams strove to maximize straight-line speed of their cars; many slipstream battles ensued. Race organizers actually felled trees and demolished old houses in order to make the circuit even quicker. International racing came with the first official Formula One event occurring in 1950, the inaugural year of the Formula One world championship. The circuit layout was shortened and changed in 1952 to bypass the town. In the 1954 race, the long-awaited Mercedes W196 with its straight-8 fuel-injection engine made its debut with Juan Manuel Fangio transferring from Maserati to join an otherwise all-German line-up of Hans Herrmann, Karl Kling and pre-war driver Hermann Lang. It was a dominant return with Fangio recording a practice lap of 124.31 mph. He and Kling led away and continued to race side by side around the Reims track. The Ferrari drivers simply couldn't cope with the pace. There was no race at Reims in 1955 and when the Grand Prix circus returned in 1956, it was without the silver arrows. Fangio dominated again but this time in a resurgent Ferrari team who's drivers also claimed the remaining podium places.

Is there anything that can be done to increase the speed of the AI on the straights?

I have set the AI speed in GEM at 0.5 and they are still very slow.

With 60fps you can't race with AI, just use 36fps and the AI work Wink

Oh! For heaven's sake! This is getting ridiculous...

This time, for no apparent reason, I get to the grid to find that my Fanatec pedals simply don't register in GPL. Game over. AAARRGHHHHH!

R1 Aintree - Spin at the final bend and get CTD. GAME OVER
R2 Brands - Real life prevents me from racing. GAME OVER
R3 Brno - Was in the lead on Lap 3 and then stacked it into a hay bale. GAME OVER
R4 Monsanto - No internet. GAME OVER
R5 Reims - USB device not recognised. GAME OVER
R6 Tripoli - I'm going to the pub.

It might be advisable for some to exercise some restraint in future.  A Lap02 shunt in T2 that takes down multiple entries is not an example of same.  Grrr...

Apologies to Fulvio for lap 2 T2. I was slowing down, but you went much slower than I expected, and I clipped you from behind. I also got collected by someone else there, but whatever damage, the car felt fine. Later in the race I overcooked the brakes and went straight in at the last corner, had to reverse back from behind the barriers, and lost around 17 seconds. Slowly caught several cars until I got to Phil. He managed to stay in my slispstream, and even managed to overtake me back, but I got him again, and than on penultimate lap Phil braked too late and went into sand on the last corner which freed me to finish in 4th.
Congrats to podium.

Yes great racing Syd. I was trying to stay in your slipstream but when the opportunity to pass presented itself I decided to go for it but the extra speed caught me out and I damaged my car. I managed to limp around the last lap but I lost another place to Ricardo.

The early laps were great fun. There was a train of 5 or 6 cars circulating in close formation. One by one they dropped out and I found myself in second place but too far back from Leo to benefit from a tow. Then I made a stupid mistake, running wide at T2. Thankfully I only clipped the cornfield so after a couple of 360s I managed to continue but I lost 3 places. The Ferrari 625 handles well but it felt very slow on the straights without a tow.

As Leo said on chat, it was a tactical race. No need to drive recklessly to try to make up places, the slipstream will do that if you plan your race. Leo proved that, he was very cautious at the start, yielding 3 or 4 places but the race is won on the last lap. Not the first.
