Season 43 – 1967 F1 – Round 6 – Works  - BOTTOMLESS LAKES
Round 6  in the  1967 Grand Prix series takes us in the US State of New Mexico.
Bottomless Lakes is located along the Pecos River, about 15 miles (24 km) southeast of Roswell. Established in 1933, it was the first state park in New Mexico. It takes its name from nine small, deep lakes located along the eastern escarpment of the Pecos River valley.
This 7.7 mile circuit was raced clockwise in an event called Las Ocho Millas, and in 1966 the winner, Joe Starkey, averaged 113mph in his McLaren Elva-Oldsmobile.

good afternoon, it is inconceivable and has no words, that the drivers of this league still come out of the pits like crazy and ruin the hot lap of those of us who have already been opening the lap, I have already said it a thousand times to respect and look at the prebluda before Go out, that actually already makes me tired... and although this season has been the worst I have had in UKGPL, there is no right to continue making beginner's mistakes in the mod. WORKS....it is believed that this mod is for professionals and that they read the preblida, right???''
I had a terrible race and I sincerely apologize to Drake for the hit I gave him, but since someone's crazy exit in the pits happened to me and my hot lap was "damaged", I was already unfocused and race were pure mistakes, I lost total concentration.....
I inform you again that I am withdrawing from this champ, from mod 67 "WORKS" until the indiscriminate exit from the pits of some drivers is resolved and the "works" mod is actually enforced, which I don't know if they do so. "trap" or that they never read the prebluda.
See you next year again here in mod "works" and I hope you find a solution for that.
thanks for the server and for the championship.

No time to practise this week so very happy to slot in P11 on the grid. I made headway and managed to get up to 5th before a spin when I was closing in on Phil. That put me back to 9th but another spin gave Cookie the place and I was resigned to 10th until I blasted past the flightless Eagle of Leo to take 9th on the line. A fun evening but my result could have been so much better.

Grats to the pods and thanks for organising. This is a great track in the 67 cars.

That was a great result for me. I was pleased to see we all negotiated the start and the first lap safely. There was a huge potential for a massive pile-up given the long run to the first corner. I didn't lose any places at the start and from then on I tried to drive within my capabilities for a change. It paid off and everyone around me made mistakes instead of me which is rather unusual. I had a great battles with Roberto, Alain, Fulvio, Cookie and Pete but I couldn't do anything about Bob. He flew past me with a lap to go and I didn't have an answer, grats on the podium Bob. Incredible pace from Greg and a well deserved P2 for Doni, great result mate. On the run-in to the line I saw a white flag which turned out to be for Leo. Unlucky Leo, I guess it was fuel?

Some seriously quick times up front . Grats to Greg on the win and to team mate Doni for both keeping up the pace and preserving all the whizzy bits in that V12.
I decided to roll the Wazamobile off the transporter to give it a run. I am trying to cure the habits of a lifetime in GPL and get to a setup and driving style in the Honda that does not send the car sideways and the rear tyre temps into the infra red spectrum......work in progress lol

Some "progress" was made and I did very little qualifying allowing me to start at the back of the grid. I must have done something right with the setup...maybe a little bit too "right" as it took almost 3 laps to get any heat into the rear tyres and the fronts were still cold??!! Also the car was overgeared I'm sure, as the critical oil temp in the Honda is 230F and I did not get above 190F. So, room for development there and I managed a 3:20 lap with a tanker load of fuel on board......when I binned it with 4 laps to go I still had 20 galls in the tank  scared.
Some tweaks needed in the suspension department as a complete lift of the gas pedal initiated a death slide into a spin, that definitely needs some calming  down, but under power the car felt solid.
Maybe Mrs Fujikawa can be tempted to return and manage a fresh assault on the championship next season. All our victories are belong to her.

From the classic 1950's musical, Guys & Dolls...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X69P_Vce9vw

Well...  Lady Luck was certainly on my side yesterday at Roswell.  She was a positive bitch for the likes of Jonny and Ricky.  And as for Leo, a slimy, stinky, diseased-laced whore.

GregT had us all nicely covered on speed for the day.  Nice job for the win, GT.  I'm elated with my P2 finish but as noted, it was only with bags of good luck.  Bob a good job for a P3 placing that changed hands any number of times throughout the race.

Some time ago, I determined that I'd park the trusty Brabham for this round and try my hand with the Eagle.  I used the BRM at Dundrod to get a bank of tokens to afford that and as it worked out, it paid off handsomely.  Not in the least surprised that there were some other Blue Birds in the entry with Greg, Jonny and Leo thinking along the same lines.  Quite pleased with my qualifying run to start P4.

Lap01 and a pucker moment as I lightly kissed the guardrail coming out of the Lagoon complex to find someone in the dirt off on my left.  This was Ricky in the Lotus skating well off the road and desperately trying to find a safe way back.  Up to P3 then.  Even as all this was going down, Jonny was spinning away his chances with an off in the Lagoon complex to resume dead last.  His challenge ended soon after with a blown engine.  Bad luck all 'round there, JJ.

I could see Greg disappearing rapidly up the road but I was holding Leo quite well.  Gradually, he inched away but was never completely out of sight.  As the laps reeled off, I was pleased to be able to keep Leo in sight but never felt that I was in a position to actually challenge.  In the early laps, I was impressed to see that my board was telling me that Alain was running in P4 with he in the BRM and only dropping back by several seconds per lap.  Obviously, having a good run in the Tank.  In the last laps, my vision was fading a bit and I was fearful of making a hash of things entering the Lagoon twisties at close on 200mph but I managed to avoid that.  On the last lap, I did fall off the road to score a '64' in the Lagoon complex as I tried to move in on Leo.  This error cost me a bit of time and I resigned to just take it easy over this last lap and not bungle away a good P3 finish.  Only moments later, coming off the chicane at Junction Hwy #409, I caught sight of a car going quite slowly on the right.  As I neared and passed, I realized that this was Leo.  Good grief!  Whatever could have happened here?  Engine failure?  Short on fuel?  How cruel to have a good drive go up the spout so close to home.  I immediately scaled back my engine revolutions thinking myself home-free for a P2 finish.  Not so fast, Doni.  Almost with passing Leo's stricken Eagle, my concentration started to fade and very rapidly.  Found myself completely out of position for taking the final sweeper and could hardly believe it when I ran out of road.  The Eagle spun to the outfield and I went for a long, wild ride before striking a barrier.  This, at least, woke me up and I regained some measure of composure to get back onto the road and carry on to the flag.  Lucky boy.  That impact could have easily sheared off a rear wheel to leave me with a DNF.

Leo's efforts to get to the flag came to nought as the Weslake V-12 gave out completely with a couple of miles to run.  He coasted as best he could to come within sight of the line before finally parking and fall to a P12 finish.  No justice there.

Still holding P2 in the standings behind Greg.  Time to put on a charge in the last two rounds!  Smiley

Congrats Doni and Bob! It's easy to screw up here and destroy your car. It was good to see my teammate on the podium.

I got lucky Leo, Enrique, and Jonny were not better prepared. It's a shame their luck was so horrible.

I struggled a little in qualifying. I was nervous for some reason and couldn't keep from making time consuming mistakes until late in the session.

Clive's report is why I try practice at least 30 minutes some time before qualifying. I would be reporting similar things if I tried to qualify/race without any practice and a decent setup. I have a good Ferrari setup that transfered to the Eagle well. I did worry about my whizzy bits. I had doubts I could keep them whizzing to the finish.

The race went well. I hoped to open an early gap so I could be cautious if I needed and try to take it easy on my engine. I lost a couple seconds in the sand once, made a few bad upshifts, and over revved the engine a few times when the car got light. The Eagle is a great car for this track since you have such a long stretch at full throttle. The car worked well. I was a little surprised how fast I was going without pushing my or the car limits much. My fast lap was done without drama and no real abuse to my drivetrain. I was very pleased about that.

This is now my home track although I do live a little more than 130 miles from the track. This would have been a good time of year to race there. Winter hasn't really arrived nor do you have 110F (43.3C) that is common in the summer. I don't get much of the searing heat in the Central Highlands but we do get some bitter cold every winter.

Thanks for the fun gentlemen. I appreciate it.

I really didn't have much idea what would happen on this track, which pleased almost all the drivers. Very quickly!!!!

In qualy I abused the Weslake engine, high revs, errors and rev peaks.
During the race, being affectionate with him, he couldn't stand 2 laps!!! GRRRRR.......... two runs with Eagle, two breaks.
I see I have a future relationship problem! But I'm happy to see our enthusiasts Greg and Doni competing for this glass of champagne!

A rare good result was a massive surprise at this round.  I tried the brab for a few laps on Friday then decided to splurge on the Ferrari for the race.  Qualifying made me wonder about my choice as I could hardly complete a lap, so I started way down, directly behind team mate Arf also in a Ferrari, having only tried one setup.

Arf was slow away but no bother I stayed behind him and hoped those behind me wouldn't get too excited. I took it easy down to the lake part expecting to encounter carnage but fortunately there was just one car in the sand and no one to avoid.

After a few mishaps in the early part of the race I was able to settle in, getting faster with almost each lap which enabled me to catch a few cars. This continued pretty much until the end.  As Phil mentioned I passed him with a lap to go then almost gave him the place back with an off on the last lap, but luckily had enough margin to rejoin in position. As I approached the line I saw an ailing Eagle, tough luck Leo, what happened?

Fastest race lap was 6 secs faster than my qual time,  good to see I finally got the hang of it! Also pleased to support Greg with our team effort, Baarf are now top o the table!

Cheers for organizing, see you down under

P. S Sorry for giving you a nudge at the lake section, Syd, hope you didn't have damage
