Season 43 - Mixed Open Wheel    Round 8:   1968 LATE  -  Boreham Airfield

The FINAL race of the season finds us at Boreham Airfield in the UK. RAF Boreham closed in 1946 and subsequently the West Essex Car Club developed the 2.95 mile perimeter track into a motor racing circuit. Although not on the official Grand Prix calendar, Boreham Circuit hosted competitive races between 1949 and 1952. Among the teams that raced at Boreham were BRM, Connaught, Frazer Nash, and Talbot-Lago. Among the drivers who raced there were Mike Hawthorn, Stirling Moss, and Ken Wharton. In 1955 the Ford Motor Company bought the airfield to use as a test facility for trucks, as well as the base for their Competitions Department where they prepared their cars.

As a Christmas Teaser, I'm letting UKGPL into my latest secret. PLEASE DON'T SHARE THIS BEYOND UKGPL for now. I'm still 6 months away from finishing this but I thought you might like to give it a spin over Christmas.

https://www.gpl67.org/anglesey

Sorry I can't make it to Boreham tonight. Strangely enough though, I'll be in a pub about 4 miles from the start/finish line so I guess I'll actually be closer than any one of you.

Have a great Christmas break. Thank you to Phil and all the other moderators for keeping S43 running.

Happy New Year to you all - see you in 2024 and Season 44.

Pete

The registration thread (vote to join): HERE
The overall Mixed Open Wheel series info HERE

I'd say any group is probably open to you (at moderator discretion),  but being the last race - is the 1968-LATE cars.

You would have to be a part-time driver & due to the number of drivers registered,  would probably be asked to wait until after 9PM (30 mins practice remaining) before joining.

Also, as the series moderator is not around later tonight - so may require another moderator to review/process your request to join.

Cheers,
Dave.

Thanks Dave.

Did some practice on the server.  Was ok once I realised that it wasn't Blandford!  First lap was very confusing.

I would take the Eagle.

a grueling race, with a couple of mistakes that left me relegated to 6th place, but I was sure that with this "super car" I could try to fight for the podium and so it was, but with the incredible surprise that I won... .... eek
I had an epic battle with Uli's powerful honda, for many laps, which made me sweat up to my nails, but a spin from the honda in T2 when we were taking the curve side by side, and I almost hit him, left me dead. The door was open to finish in 2nd place, but OHHHH surprise when in T8 I met the leader Evil, I don't know what happened to him, but I think he made a mistake, then I tried to go as fast as possible and I was able to finish 1st. That is already a lot for me, a heart attack, a nervous breakdown, trembling legs, and burning eyes, was what this victory left me with...... wheelchair
I once again congratulate Ulli's excellent work this season, a deserved champion, unbeatable, with a very strong Japanese brand in all modes.  I Am Not Worthy
In this championship he managed to win the bronze medal and that makes me happy, (a wine to celebrate)  clap
Thank you for everything, to the organization, to the servers and to everyone who in some way supports the GPL to continue living, to this community that is so small but at the same time so large.
For all that I wish you a great Christmas and a very excellent year 2024 and yes.....I will continue participating in UKGPL.... yes

cookie, I'm sorry for the touch, but I think you closed a little on my racing line and that's why we hit each other...

Pete, that circuit looks very beautiful, I can't wait to spin it.

P.S please, I just want to make a note to the cars that are being caught with a lap less, since they should consider leaving space for the one that is catching up with them and not start fighting against them, they can harm a race or even worse, a championship, please let the leaders pass.
   thank you

Congratulations Enrique and Clive
Nice with you both on the last season podium. Grin
Great speed again, you McLaren guys have yesterday. After my bad start, it took me 10 laps to close the gap to Clive (THX to the fair Matra drivers) and just when I was behind, I made my first big mistake = shift-R. A nice and close duel with Enrique followed. That was big fun! THX to you, Enrique! My spin in T2 was the end of it. Shame, three close cars on the finish line would have been a great show …
@ Clive: As you could see, you were wrong, when you said that I’m in the footsteps of Jos.  Wink The Hondas were not Red Bulls of the 60th. Also, I made many mistakes this season. Last but not the least luck often was on my side – shame it was not on yours, sorry for that, you have fought for victory so often …
My really best races of the season were Jarama and especially the one at the Nürburgring, but Monjuich was by far the most exhausting.
I am looking forward to what our admins (BIG THX TO YOU, that was a successful, well-organised championship!) will be on offer next year. Maybe I cannot resist and try again …
I like this MIX championship format, even if I would like to ride a complete 68 season again.
Thank you very much for your congratulations.  Cool
This year with more than 75 races over all, was much too much for me. So I will reduce my GPL engagement in 2024. That is what I planned every year  Roll Eyes but first, I need that coming up winter break …
THX, again to all drivers and admins for having so much fun here.
Have a good winter break, happy holidays without GPL!?  Roll Eyes
I wish you all a happy new year.
ULI
The Master of Mods Formula 2023  Grin

Many mistakes during this race, engine exploded 30 seconds  after the start, bad braking with Billy... Nobrakes as an innocent victim (sorry Billy), etc.

I was just happy to see I could still have a fun battle with Andreas during several laps ...that didn't happen to me for many seasons !

Happy new year, see you next season (or maybe before for fun races ?)

Well done Enrique, that was a great way to end the season.

My last minute 68 experience was rather short lived.

I was happy enough with my qualifying but in the race I was immediately aware that racing the beasts was a different ball game.
Having no idea how I would ever be able to pass another car because I was never too sure about the brakes. I've spent so long in 55 that brakes are a strange concept.

These days, I'm also too easily distracted, so when a car up ahead was spotted motoring across the grass to rejoin from the Chelmsford direction, I completely messed up my braking whilst pondering what the gaggle of cars in front of me might be doing. So I spun out and had to wait for the world and his mates to come past before I could rejoin.

After a fight with Paul I once again lost the plot when the default Eagle missbehaved. It had been good up until then but that was another trip to the grass.

I finally binned it and lost a wheel, so called it a day.

Thanks for letting me play. Think I will go back to 55.

Thanks to all who have organised and taken part in this series, also congratulations to Uli who may have been lucky, but he made the most of his chances and I did not. I guess that is what makes a good racer?? Wink Enrique was always competitive and I think Will needs a mention too for his improvement over this season.

The final race at Boreham was a perfect example of how I manage to screw up a season lol. The quali times were close, but at least I knew that because I had done mine on race fuel I should at least be competitive in the race. I think that, from 2nd on the grid, my start was the best one of my whole season. Almost zero wheelspin and the engine revs did not bog down, so the car just launched itself...I was just hanging on to the wheel and trying not to black out with the G-force!!! By T1 I had passed Uli and had about 50mtrs lead??? For the first 3 laps I just went 100% and slowly the gap grew. Then I eased back to avoid my usual dumb mistakes, but that just allowed Uli to start closing the gap. So I pumped in a few quick laps just as Uli had his incident.
I thought that I could relax a little, but now Enrique was hunting me down  :-/.
To maintain the gap I was working at 98%, allowing myself a fraction of safety and then I think Enrique had a problem and the gap opened up again.
It was then that I discovered that the very intense pace of the first half of the race had swallowed far more fuel than I had expected, and now I had to save some juice for the final laps. That was OK with such a big gap back to Enrique and Uli, but I found that trying to drive 10% slower very difficult lol. I was missing apexes and braking points, the car was not drifting quite so wide through the corners and I kept clipping the straw bales. Fortunately there was no damage, but it cost me more time than I could afford.
Then with just 3 laps to go and when I thought that I now had enough fuel to carry me to the flag, even with Enrique closing in.......I caught the bales too hard and broke something in the steering...... cursing taz taz taz
I needed a Shift/R, but I had just passed 2 backmarkers and GPL made me wait, and wait until Enrique swept past.
The last 3 laps were 110% and I posted a fastest lap on full tanks to get within 5 mtrs of Enrique with just 2 corners to go. Maybe another lap (or two!!) would have given me a chance to regain the lead, but Enrique won and I had 2nd with Uli in 3rd. Another race thrown away with a dumb mistake lol.

Great competition and fun with these cars and you guys, on to Season 44  Grin Grin

No worries David. I watched the football until half time then jumped on the server to put in a quick qualifying lap. After the incident I needed a reset & was in last place by 500 meters. I decided to retire the car & watch the end of the football - which was a good result for me.
The car allocation with the 68s is interesting as it means the Privateer drivers have enough car advantage to compete against some of the Works drivers.
Boreham is a fun track & I would have stayed longer on any other day.
