SEASON 44  -  1967 F2    AMATEURS         Round 2  -  Rouen

"From its opening in 1950, Rouen-Les-Essarts was recognized as one of Europe's finest circuits, with modern pits, a wide track, and spectator grandstands. The street circuit (which ran on public roads) had a few medium straights, a cobbled hairpin turn (Nouveau Monde) at the southernmost tip, and a few blind corners through a wooded hillside The appeal was greatly enhanced by the climb from Nouveau Monde at 56 m (184 ft) to Gresil at 149 m (489 ft), with gradients over 9%.

Rouen hosted five Formula One French Grand Prix races, the last one in 1968 resulting in the tragic burning death of Jo Schlesser, at the fast downhill Six Frères curve. The circuit continued to host major Formula 2 events until 1978, after which it was used for various French Championships."

I hope this doesn't need mentioning, but I'd like to remind everyone that the pit lane at the start of the race is not a passing lane. That first bend is bad enough as it is. Having cars coming out of your blind spot on the right when you're not expecting them just guarantees mayhem. We saw enough of that at T1 two weeks ago.

that was GPL as it should be.
 
sorry to baulk the guys behind me. had a taller 1st gear than i remember from practice,  thanks for not nudging me from behind but my apologies for making you drop back.

settled into some fun laps. was running neck and neck with Billy and Fran for most of the race. bloody brilliant stuff. 

didnt have enough speed to pass Fran but put him under a bit of pressure I think ?, I think I had enough with the draft and slightly longer gears to have stayed close to him and possibly beat him to the finish line. but sadly wasnt to be. Fran just touched the kerb/grass and let me through.  other wise I think the place was probably his

I got a bit close to the rear of Fran at one point and hoped i had pushed him deep enough into the corner to perhaps make him make a mistake, I backed off and then saw Billy coming up behind me. I do wonder if I caused a problem for Billy as he braked hard to miss me. I carried on OK but it dropped Billy back. either way, Sorry mate as we were having 3 way ding dong battle.

Nice drive by Cubby too as he was slowly but constantly pulling us in.. shame you didnt get with us mate as its always pleasure racing you.

well done pods and all finishers. tonight was a blast.

Thanks Paul, yeah I caught some damage from Lucarno when he spun off the verge after the chicane, after that my Protos was a little twitchy to say the least.  Smiley

That has to be one of the most intense races I have had for years  
Got pole, but I was outdragged by DaveC, at the start, and Dave R almost got past as well
then Dave C decided to clean his tyres on some grass to let me take the lead..... Roll Eyes
And then followed a masterclass in patience, as I got in his way for the next 20 laps
I've been there before here, when you can easily get a tow too early, and have to lift
on to the straight. He made a couple of passing attempts into  Scierie, but no contact
and finaly made it stick there on the last lap. The gap is closer than it looks, as I spun
trying an up and under that put me on the grass  Embarrassed Dave deserved the win
he was much faster in race mode  I Am Not Worthy

What can you expect when you put one of the original Papyrus tracks on an F2 schedule? Ten starters and ten finishers all on the same lap. In my case I took the Matra 5 and somehow managed to knock off one second from my PB in the practice session before qualifying. I had seen earlier in the day online that Matt and Dave were going to be in a different world than I was. I didn't know that David had the chops to join them. So when I turned a 2:04+ in qualifying, I spent the rest of the session rolling around with race fuel. I wasn't going to catch the three guys in front unless they crashed out.

What I didn't count on was the guy behind me --- RogUK? --- who was also in a Matra like mine and was just 0.04 behind me. I figured he'd had a lucky lap and I'd lose him after the hairpin at the bottom of the hill. I didn't lose him. We crossed the S/F for the first time. He was one second behind me. Matt, Dave, and David were walking away from me and this . . . this guy was still there. Lap 2. One second behind. Lap 3. The same. And this went for the following laps, with RogUK never more than one second behind me: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21. On the last lap I was down to little more than fumes in the tank, so I figured I'd distance myself from this leech and set a PB in the process. I did not. He managed to close the gap at the end to 14/100ths of a second.

I bought GPL the week it came out in October 1995. In all those years I have never had a race with anyone as close as this one was.

[Erratum: I just looked at the replay. It wasn't RogUK but Fabio behind me in the first two laps. I blame the error in my original post on the three bottles of wine I consumed in the first ten minutes after the event.]

Now I've had a quick look at the replay,  I can post something Smiley

That was quite the workout!

Managed to grab a good place on the grid thanks to a lucky tow.  Matt then posted a great time to grab pole.
I then tried a click on 5th gear, assuming I'd be trying to play catch-up in the race with a tow,  but it didn't feel right so took it off agan.

Start was ok, luckily Matt didn't get the cleanest getaway.  Then threw the early lead away by just going off at my main bogey-corner T2.  Crept back ontrack, but had lost places to Matt & Dave. Managed to sneak past Dave after he'd lost out after glancing a kerb.

Spent the next 9 laps buzzing around in Matt's ear.  With the tow, I could keep up but that was all.  I was wondering about the longer 5th gear!
Then span out & took around 9 laps slowly catching back up again.  But the race was nearly done, so had to get stuck in.

Tried on lap 21 to get past on the inside at Scierie.  I came out ahead, but Matt was offtrack. I didn't feel anything, but gave the place back just in case there was contact.
This led to a last-lap chase and similar move at the same spot.

Thanks for the great race Matt. Good to see that you managed to get away again in time to keep the 2nd place.


Also good to see there were too many entrants in both the Pro & Ams servers for a single server!

A bit of pressure was always present but my mistake was due to a wrong steering angle.The car was flyng away suddenly.Shame,one position lost.

About the podium,i don't know where they have found the secons less on each lap.I must analyse the replay.

For me - It was probably due to the tow & having spent additional tokens on the other Lola.


I think it’s all coincidence; but  due to recent  (re)mentions of FOV - I experimented & reduced mine for Blandford/Porto & here. All of which ended up most enjoyable. I’d been using the previous settings for years. Just coincidence.

My times were nothing special compared to the Pro pilotes
I had tried all of the FVAs and I got similar times with any of them
but the Matra5 just seemed to click best with the setup, so I took him

There was some contact on the Lap21 pass, I got bounced into the fence
but you waited, and there seemed no damage, so no worries.
Lap 22  pass I just messed up and spun without any assistance.

I know Rouen well, have raced there in other sims. I had never seen Blandford
but liked it very much, so did lots of practice. Didn't matter how much noise I made there
I could not make the birds on the telegraph wires fly off. Most unrealistic  Roll Eyes

Of the upcoming tracks, I know Suzuka (depends on how accurate it is)
The version of Brands we are using next week for the 55Mod is proper mountain climbing  Shocked
somewhat exagerated elevation, but good

I know Snetterton (maybe.. I did a sprint there a few years ago on the short "100" layout

There are loads (too many, maybe) on that site. In lockdown spectators were not allowed, so some
hillclimb venues did external live stream in youtube and there's a couple of my 106Rallye at Shelsley Walsh
and an in car of one of the runs.

I know The Glen well, but have never seen any of the others, so will need lots of practice.

I seem to remember that I can hover over a link in Series page? maybe? to see what tokens I have?
easy enough after two rounds, but I imagine it can get interesting later on.

Had a poor start Fabio shot in front of me dropping me down one place, lap 3 he made a mistake going down to the hairpin letting me back to 5th, then i had Pepe ahead in 4th, the start of 18 laps of close racing, i found the only way to pass Pepe was to slip stream him going up to Scierie and out brake him at the turn but try as hard as i could my car did not have that little bit of extra power to get beside him and he still out braked me at the turn. Thanks Pepe for some great racing.

It was fun until it lasted...  Cry

After my mistake I found myself at the back of all racers and I tried to recover some positions.
Well, everybody was racing so fast!!
Anyway, I really enjoyed a race on my own and at least I wasn't lapped: I finished in the 8th place only because of Roo's and Billy's mistakes, sorry guys.

See you in South Africa, totally unknown track then it will probably be a different story... Undecided

I don't think,i had one tow on the long straight but the time was near 2,06.Rainier with the Lola BMW was faster than me.So there is a skill that i don't have.
