Season 44 - 1955GP (Works) - Round 2 – Brands HatchThe second race in the 1955 Grand Prix series finds us at Brands Hatch in England. The first race to be held at Brands Hatch took place on 16th April 1950, it featured 500cc cars competing over a version of the "Indy" circuit (without Druids Hill Bend) in an anti-clockwise direction. During the 1950s the track was extended to include Druids Hill bend, Paddock Hill bend and the racing direction was changed to clockwise. It wasn't until 1960 that the full Grand Prix circuit was created. The British Grand Prix has been held at Brands Hatch on 12 occasions and the European Grand Prix has been held there twice. The 1967 Grand Prix was won by Jack Brabham and the 1968 race by Jo Siffert driving a Brabham Repco BT19 and a Lotus-Cosworth 49B respectively. There have also been numerous non-championship Formula 1 races most notably the Race of Champions in 1967 which was won by Dan Gurney in the Eagle-Weslake T1G. Before wasting hours of practice on this I could really do with knowing if I still have to keep two wheels on the tarmac or can I go where I like and try to miss those objects that have been modelled as solid?

2 wheels within the white lines at all times I don't think there is anywhere on this track where all 4 wheels on the grass would be advantageous. Riding the kerbs is tricky in these cars, so all 4 wheels within the white lines is a good place to be.

I feel that consideration of what is advantageous is a bit of a red herring and will at some point make life absolute hell for the moderators. We have a rule.

By advantageous, I mean why would anyone be motivated to do it if it wasn't advantageous? But you are right, we have a rule and everyone must comply.
It won't be hell for the moderators, if everyone complies with the rules and any transgressions are reported.
If a moderator has to review the entire race from every driver's point of view to check who was cutting corners, then I agree with you; that would be hell. But that won't happen.

I agree with Phil on this, although after the comments about the last race I can understand Clive's misgivings.
I cannot think of any point around Brands Hatch where deliberately and repeatedly cutting a corner gains an advantage. With these cars I feel one can only gain an advantage where more speed is carried across a tight apex, and I cannot see such a possibility at Brands. The geometry of the corners is just wrong, unlike Assen where there were a couple of tempting "shortcuts". In all of this I do not consider it an offence to run wide and bounce along the grass because one fails to negotiate the corner, that is sure to lose time and it is in no way "cheating". But of course it will register as "off track".
.It is interesting that most other sims have this area of contention covered. In GTL you are warned on screen for cutting the track...3 warnings and an automatic SnG. In Raceroom the software automatically calculates any advantage gained and requires that the driver slows down and gives up that time. rF2 also warns about similar situations and eventually will apply an SnG. Clearly GPL records "off track" moments or the data would not be available to discuss? Just a shame that the software in GPL cannot take this judgement out of the hands of the moderators and nullify any arguments.

Actually GPL does have a facility to automatically assign an in-race penalty but we always disable this option for on-line races (by checking the "Disable Checkpoints" option in iGOR). The reason being that network latencies can erroneously generate a missed checkpoint. This was a real problem in the days of 56K modems. We've not done any testing with modern broadband connections, perhaps we should?

Some testing at the mid season break might be worth doing, just to see how it functions:- a) with modern broadband and, b) penalties issued?

With all of the addon tracks that we use I would be surprised if anyone except Doni could escape penalties, since the corner cutting limits tend to be all over the place. With the current rule of two wheels on the tarmac we know where we stand. Rest assured that if the cars in front of me are regularly cutting corners then you are going to hear about it!

I guess that's the point (?) as long as folks are prepared to report instances of 4-wheel track cutting they can be ruled on by the mods.

Where are the remaining driver tokens posted? I can't seem to find them anywhere. I know I have 8 left plus 10 for starting the 2nd race, but would be nice to be able to check whenever.

Hover your mouse pointer over your points total in the championship table (unfortunately it only works on a computer, it doesn't work on mobile phones).

Thanks, Phil! I knew it was something about hovering! I was trying to hover over different things earlier but must've missed that specific table cell

I was a bit off my PB in qually but even if I'd matched it, I wouldn't have been near the front row in this company. Brilliant lap times from Yannick and Hristo with Leo mighty close. I got a bit of a slow start and got mugged by Syd in the Merc. For what seemed like half the race I was all over Syd's tail but there was no way I was going to get past unless he made a mistake. Unfortunately for Syd and Jonathan they tangled at Druids and I grabbed the chance to pick up 2 places. A few laps later, Enrique ran wide at Clearways and I got past. At this point I could see Clive and Dimitar ahead but I couldn't close the gap. If anything Clive and Dimitar were inching away. Before long the Silver Arrow loomed large in my mirrors and I had to push hard to stay ahead of Syd. My efforts paid off and Syd made a mistake and dropped back. The only way I was going to catch Clive now was if he made a mistake but he didn't. With 4 laps to go Jonathan caught me up, I tried hard to defend but he used the power of the Vanwall to blast past my Connaught through Pilgrim's Drop. Fortunately for me, Jonathan ran wide at Druids on lap 23 and I squeezed ahead again. As we crossed the line to start the last lap Jonathan was on my inside and we rounded Paddock Hill Bend side-by-side! Jonathan left his braking too late and ran wide at Druids again and I got past. All I had to do now was stay on the tarmac for the rest of the lap but I blew it running wide at South Bank. I only touched the the grass on the last 20 metres of the turn but it meant I couldn't get the power down early enough and Jonathan breezed past. The run to the line was close but Jonathan didn't make a mistake and he took the place. Great race Jonathan, well done
