Season 44 F1 1967 WORKS – Round 5 –  ZELTWEG 1970

The fifth race in the 1967 Works Grand Prix series finds us at Zeltweg in Austria, the original Österreichring. Built in 1969 to replace the bland and bumpy Zeltweg Airfield circuit, the track was known for being very fast, as every corner was a fast sweeper and taken in no lower than 3rd gear in a 5-speed gearbox and 4th in a 6-speed gearbox.  There are also noticeable changes in elevation during the course of a lap which means the downhill sections are even faster. Like most fast circuits it was a hard circuit on engines and even harder on tyres simply because the speeds were so consistently high. The first World Championship round to be held at the Österreichring was in 1970 and the race was won by Jacky Ickx, driving a Ferrari. His teammate, Clay Regazzoni, made it a Ferrari 1-2 by finishing second a mere 0.61s behind. Rolf Stommelen achieved his only podium finish, coming third in a Brabham-Ford. Local driver and championship leader Jochen Rindt started from pole position in his Lotus-Ford, but retired with an engine failure. It would turn out to be Rindt's final Formula One race start.

THERE ARE MORE THAN 19 REGISTERED DRIVERS IN THIS SERIES, SO :
The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

It looks like there is a buggy version of this track. See the discussion in the Privateers announcement. If you have any doubts, I suggest you use the link above to download the correct version of this track.

I am very disappointed...
Unfortunately, this track version has lost all its character, no bumps and much too wide. It's like a plain candy...
Too much arcade!
And those stupid poles... there were some, but not all around!

PS

Remember these days the F1 was not this big comercial streamlined machine, it was wild, shortliving and anarchic , that's what makes it attractive to us old farts!

This is a new track for me. I must have missed it when it first came out. It was quite a shock to find extra corners and BIG elevation changes compared to the older versions. I know it is basically the same layout, but it drives like a totally different circuit.

BTW a stunning job by Marcos  I Am Not Worthy

LOLOLOL I just read Phil's post......it appears that we differ in our opinions, but I agree about those poles although they will prevent corner cutting intentional or otherwise  Roll Eyes

I do admire every trackmaker for his work, but in this case the work of Pete gets a 200% plus from me!

Maybe Ginetto and Pete and Jim Pearson made me picky...

Because I am hopeless at things like track building ( even a drag strip would have negative camber if I made it!!) they all look fantastic to me.  Tongue

It's not the beatyfull look, its the atmosphere you get, and this track has something sterile but not a racetrack of the 60/70s.

There is an upcoming track: Brno37, this is a spring fairytale the whole track!
After the first round you are speechless and enchanted...

PS

Bulavayo has the atmosphere, and looks wonderfull but the idiotic gras destroyes all racing.
I first had doubts for my ability to make a setup there...

This track version caught me out at the first lap. It is probably an accurate layout, but is, to me, much more elevation than I have seen with this layout previously
You've done the GTL, but perhaps not the Race Room variant Clive? both of which feel more true to life. Ok, the R3E version is only the current modern one.

This one looks good, drives well, has no bumps that weren't there at the time, and were just sloppy build.

The downhill sections, and the tightness of the turns doesn't feel real, but it's a good track to drive, so I am happy

I just did a test lap at the Nurby and when driving, I thougt - imagine the gras would be like the Bula - not a single lap would be possible! IMO... Grin

Very funny movie. I haven't watched it for several years, I think I've got it on DVD somewhere. I'll have to dig it out.

Yeah, when comes the money? If I have to drive what the Boss wants, I expect a cheque like Ham gets ....

I drive for FUN  and do my part for the community, so when I see a problem I name it. Shocked

PS
I have no problem driving the 70, and I have a good relation to Marcos, and I know who made the choice.
But when I will make a choice for a series I will never use it...

It's one of my unashamed favorites. I can't quote many films, but this one is an exception. Lol
